  • In this study, the large scale model tests were executed to estimate the Load Sharing Ratio (LSR) of raft in a piled footing under various conditions. The conditions such as the subsoil type, pile length, pile spacing, away type and pile installation method etc. were varied in the pile loading tests about the free-standing group piles and a piled footing. As a result of this study, it was found that there was no difference in the load-settlement curves, resulting from the pile installation method and subsoil type. The piles supported most of the external load until a yielding load of the piled footing, but the raft supported a considerable load after a yielding load. As the relative density of sands increased, the LSR decreased. As the pile spacing was wider and the pile length increased, there was a tendancy for the LSR to increase. But it was also found that the LSR was not affected by the pile installation method and the subsoil type.

  • To simulate the three4imensional effect occurring near the tunnel face in a two -dimensional model, empirical load -dirtribution ratio concept is frequently used in tunnel design. In this paper, three -dimensional analysis is performed and its results are compared with those of two dimensional analysis'to investigate the applicability of the loadiistribution ratio concept. Especially, stress concentration near the tunnel face is investigated in depth. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of each factor on the load distribution ratio. The factors considered here include unsupported span length, initial stress, rock quality, tunnel size and the depth of tunnel location Moreover, the load -distribution ratios for the typical tunnel sections in Seoul Subway to be used in the tunnel design are suggested.

  • The bearing capacity of the prebored pile has been studied by many researchers. However, The bearing capacity of the prebored pile has been studied by many researchers. However, comparative studies between design data and pile load test data on the load sharing ratio and the settlement were insignificant. Therefore, the design data and the static load test results were compared for the prebored open-end steel piles. In the compressive static pile load test, the load sharing ratios of the base resistance and the shaft resistance were 13%~40% and 60%~87%, respectively and the settlements were measured 2.2mm~4.7mm. In the current bearing capacity calculation formula, the base resistance was shared between 54% and 75%, and the shaft resistance was shared between 25% and 46% and the settlements were calculated about 19.8mm~23.6mm. The settlement in the current bearing capacity calculation formula was 321% to 776% (average : 445%) larger than the settlement in the result of load test. When the settlement were calculated using the load sharing ratio in the pile load tests, it was 137% to 525% larger than the test settlement, and it was as large as 204% on average. It was confirmed that an appropriate evaluation of the load sharing ratio had an important effect on the calculation of pile settlement.

  • In this study, the load capacities and behaviors of a shotcrete member with steel supports, as composite member, are investigated numerically by using a fiber section element. The cross section of a shotcrete lining with steel support is divided into a bundle of fibers, which are allocated nonlinear stress-strain relations and used for determining internal forces. To verify the used approach of the finite element method for shotcrete with steel supports, the load-displacement relations of shotcrete lining obtained by numerical analysis are compared with existing experimental results and are analyzed with the stress distribution of the shotcrete and steel support obtained numerically. As a result, it is shown that the proposed approach can predict the load capacities of each material and the overall nonlinear behavior of shotcrete lining with steel supports. The change of location of the neutral axis and the flexural resistance ratio of each material are also derived from the stress distribution of the cross section of the shotcrete lining with steel supports. From the results, it is concluded that the flexural resistance performance of steel support should be considered in shotcrete lining design.

  • This study was undertaken in order to investigate the load bearing capacity of raft in a piled raft through the laboratory model tests, the numerical and analytical analyses. The model tests were conducted about a piled raft, the free-standing pile group, a single pile, as well as a shallow foundation under equal conditions. The pile spacing and length, group type and soil conditions were varied in the laboratory model tests. The experimental results were compared with those by the commercial program, DEFPIG, conventional methods and Phung's method. According to this study, the behavior of piled raft was affected by pile spacing, length and soil conditions. Phung's method proved to be reliable for estimating the experimental results.

  • In this study, field measurements were investigated to analyze the load sharing ratio and behavior of piled raft foundation. The field measurements were performed for about 300 days from the start of construction. The geometry of the raft is $3.1m{\times}3.1m$, and the pre-cast and pre-bored pile is 23 m in length and 0.508 m in diameter. Based on the field measurements, the load-settlement relationship of the piled raft foundation was obtained, and the load sharing ratio of the pile was converged to 70% at ultimate loading condition. The load sharing ratio of the pile increased as the settlement increased, and this is because the surface friction of the weathered soil, which is at the lower ground, was significantly increased. Based on the results of the field measurements, load transfer curves were obtained and applied to a numerical analysis by using load transfer method.

  • The effect of raft flexibility on piled raft foundations in sandy soil was investigated using a numerical analysis and an analytical study. The investigation's emphasis was the load sharing between piles and raft following the raft rigidity (KR), end-bearing conditions. The case of individual piles and subsequently the response of groups of piles was analyzed using a 3D FEM. This study shows that the αpr, load-sharing ratio of piled raft foundations, decreases as the vertical loading increases and as the KR decreases. This tendency is more obvious when using friction piles compared to using end-bearing piles. The effect of raft rigidity is found to be more significant for the axial force distribution - each pile within the foundations has almost similar axial forces of the pile head with a flexible raft; however, each pile has different values with rigid rafts, especially with the end-bearing piles. The axial force of the pile base with floating piles shows similar point-bearing resistance for all the piles; however, it shows different values with end-bearing piles. The differential settlement ratio of rafts showed a larger value with lower KR.

  • The effect of the steel pipe member joint on the design performance of a plastic multi-span greenhouse was analysed through the comparing full-scale experiment and numerical analysis. The design performance of the greenhouse is generally evaluated through numerical analysis, but it is rare to consider the characteristics of the connections or joints of the members. In this study, the effect of the column-gutter beam-rafter-wind break wall joint on the design performance of the whole structure of a plastic multi-span greenhouse was analysed. The numerical results with assuming that the member joint are rigid condition were compared with the full-scale load test results using member joints used in the field. The stiffness of the entire structure was compared using the load-displacement relationship and the change of the load sharing ratio that the main members such as column, rafters, and wind break wall was analysed. The results of the load test were about 40% larger than the numerical result and the member stress was more than twice as large as those of the loaded columns. In order to increase the reliability of the design performance of the greenhouse, it is necessary to develop a numerical analysis model which can consider the characteristics of various joints.

  • Recently, there are increasing technical needs for foundation retrofit project such as vertical extension of apartment building. This paper focuses on the load distribution characteristics of existing and reinforcing piles when reinforcing pile is installed to the existing foundation. Allowable bearing load was initially applied on the foundation slab supported with four existing piles and then, one reinforcing pile was installed at the center of foundation slab and additional load was applied. The experimental results showed the Load Distribution Ratio (LDR) between existing and reinforcing piles converged after the applied load exceeded allowable bearing capacity of all piles. Laboratory tests were also performed for the cases of 60 %, 80 %, 100 % unloading level of allowable bearing load. After unloading step, one reinforcing pile was installed at the center of foundation slab and additional load was applied. The results showed that reloading load level at which LDR between existing and reinforcing piles converged decreased as the amount of unloading load increased.

  • The design of Piled Raft foundations considering the load sharing between raft and piles provides a more economical solution than the conventional design approach based on bearing capacity of piles only. Generally, numerical methods are used to analyze the behavior of Piled Rafts due to its complexity and load sharing ratio is also estimated by numerical methods about some limited cases under specific load level and soil conditions. In this study, a method to estimate the load sharing between the raft and piles was developed which is based on load-settlement characteristics of foundation elements. Normalized load-settlement curves of the raft and pile groups were derived individually, and the relationship between load sharing ratio and foundation settlement was proposed by using these curves. For each load-settlement curves, hyperbolic type was adopted in order to describe the non-linear behavior of foundations. Centrifuge test results were compared with the results from proposed method, and the trends of variation of load sharing ratio with settlement presented from both were similar.
