  • In this study, it is carried out to analyze the international design standards such as Eurocode 8, API 650, NZSEE and etc for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks. From the comparison and analysis, the data for the required parameters and factors are provided for the establishment of Korean seismic design standard for steel liquid storage tanks. The simplified mechanical models have been presented for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks in all design standards and the parameters of mechanical models in design standards have similar values. Although the models for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks are similar in design standards, design approaches are given differently in accordance with the design methods, allowable stress design or limit state design. Therefore it is not easy to compare seismic forces presented in design standards directly. After comparison of design standards, it is concluded that establishment of Korean design standard for the seismic design of steel liquid storage tanks is necessary.

  • As a new structural system, the diagrid system resists both gravity and lateral loads with diagonal columns. In current seismic design provisions, however, the response modification factor for a new structural system is not provided yet. ATC-63 provides a new methodology for defining various seismic performance factors, including the response modification factor. ATC-63 includes the collapse margin ratio in modifying the response modification factor, which can vary with many structural systems. In this paper, a non-linear static analysis and a dynamic analysis were conducted for four different diagrid models with 4-to 36-story heights. From these analyses, the response modification factor of the diagrid system was evaluated.

  • The curtain wall construction applied on high-rise building facades in Korea became generalized, but specialty of the CMr(Construction Manager) who needs to perform economical project management with specialty in the curtain wall construction is still lacking. Therefore, this study analyzed the structure design standard of the curtain wall, researched economical design alternatives. Based on the research results, if the ratio of dead load against wind load is less than 0.1256, LRFD will be more economical.

  • In this study, I-type girders, main members of a steel composite bridge, are designed by Load and Resistance Factor Design method as well as Allowable Stress Design method. The width, height web thickness and flange thickness of main girders are set as design variables. The design program connects optimization program ADS, which is coded with FORTRAN, and a main program coded with $C^{++}$. In this study, it is shown that in this particular steel composite bridge, the design by The Load and Resistance Factor Design method is more economical than that by The Allowable Stress Design method.d.

  • Conventional methods for the assessment of liquefaction potential were primary for severe earthquake regions $(M{\geq}7.5)$ such as North America and Japan. In Korea, an earthquake related research has started in 1997, but most contents in the guidelines were still quoted from literature reviews of North America and Japan, which are located in strong earthquake region. Those are not proper in a moderate earthquake regions including Korea. Also the equivalent uniform stress concept (Seed & Idriss, 1971) using regular sinusoidal loading which is used, in a conventional method for the assessment of liquefaction potential, can't reflect correctly the dynamic characteristics of real irregular earthquake motions. In this study, cyclic triaxial tests using irregular earthquake motions are performed with different earthquake magnitudes, relative densities, and fines contents. Assessment of liquefaction potential in moderate earthquake regions is discussed based on various laboratory test results. From the results, screening limits in seismic design were re-investigated and proposed using normalized maximum stress ratios under real irregular earthquake motions. Also from the tests using constant wedge loading and incremental wedge loading, the characteristics of liquefaction resistance of saturated sand under irregular ground motions are investigated.

  • This study is directed to propose a set of reliability based design provisions which gives more rational design for R.C. columns than the current WSD or USD standard design codes. Cornell's MFOSM theory is used for the derivation of the algorithm for the evaluation of uncertainties associated with resistances, whereas the magnitude of the uncertainties associated with load effects are chosen primarily by considering our level of practice. And thus the uncertainties so obtained are applied for the reliability analysis and the derivation of reliability based design criteria. A target reliability(${\beta}_0=4.0$) is selected as an appropriate value by comparing the values used in foreign countries and by analyzing the reliability levels of our current USD and WSD design standars. Then, a set of load and resistance factors corresponding to the target reliability is proposed as a reliability based design provision, and furthermoere a set of allowable stresses for reinforcing steel and concrete having same level of relibity with the corresponding LRFD criteria is also propared for the current WSD design provision. It may be concluded that the proposed LRFD reliability based design provisions and the corresponding allowable stresses give more rational design than the current code for R.C. columns and may be desirable to introdue into the current WSD and USD provision of R.C. column design.

  • The present study proposes the strengthening method to use Conclinic Advanced FiberWrep(CAF) so as to improve Load Carrying Capacity of the RC slab bridge. In order to evaluate the strengthening performance, we strengthen 50cm per unit-width of CAF to the slab's bottom of the test bridge that designed with DB 18, then perform Static and Dynamic Field Load Test. As a result of this, 14.7% of the maximum displacement, 5.0% of the strain and 33.7% of the impact factor are reduced after strengthening. At the middle of the test spans, nominal resisting ratio is increased by 27% and Service Load Carrying Capacity is increased by 44.6%, 48.9% of each span 1 and 2. In conclusion, this study indicates that the strengthening method using CAF is very effective to improve the deteriorated RC slab bridge designed with DB 18, to the DB 24 of the first class bridge design load.

  • As a part of Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) code development in Korea, in this paper an intensive reliability analysis was performed to evaluate reliability levels of the two static bearing capacity methods for driven steel pipe piles adopted in Korean Standards for Structure Foundations by the representative reliability methods of First Order Reliability Method(FORM) and Monte Carlo Simulation(MCS). The resistance bias factors for the two static design methods were evaluated by comparing the representative measured bearing capacities with the design values. In determination of the representative bearing capacities of driven steel pipe piles, the 58 data sets of static load tests and soil property tests were collected and analyzed. The static bearing capacity formula and the Meyerhof method using N values were applied to the calculation of the expected design bearing capacity of the piles. The two representative reliability methods(FORM, MCS) based computer programs were developed to facilitate the reliability analysis in this study. Mean Value First Order Second Moment(MVFOSM) approach that provides a simple closed-form solution and two advanced methods of FORM and MCS were used to conduct the intensive reliability analysis using the resistance bias factor statistics obtained, and the results were then compared. In addition, a parametric study was conducted to identify the sensibility and the influence of the random variables on the reliability analysis under consideration.

  • A new freeform structure representing "Diagrid, Cantilevered, Tilted." which has been considered not only its distinctive appearance but also the structural advantages becomes one of the trends in tall building design. Especially in the Diagrid system, loads can be distributed through bracing frame so that it can be save the materials since it has more effective in the structure behavior. But the seismic performance index such as response modification factor is not clearly defined yet. Even though the diagrid is supposed to show higher seismic performance, it is underestimated due to the lack of reliable data. In this paper the response modification factor for the diagrid system is experimentally explored.

  • In this study, an optimization design of reinforced concrete structures is performed by using the structural optimization techniques based on the LRFD criteria. The target reliability index is estimated by the optimal reliability index considering the expected cost which is taken as a sum of the structural cost and the expected costs due to failure of the structure. The load and resistance factors calculated by using level I reliability theory with the target reliability index are compared for each load combination (D+L, D+L+w). The results of this study show that the resistance factors are ${\phi}_{M}$=0.90, ${\phi}_{V}$==0.70, ${\phi}_{C}$==0.65 and the load factors are 1.20D + 1.70L, 1.07L + 0.07L + 1.10W. The optimization techinques used to this study are S.L.P. The optimization design based on the LRFD criteria is more economical and rational than other criteria.
