  • The purpose of study is to investigate the load resistance mechanism of MRS continuous joint designed with different details. Six full-scale specimens, which could simulate the negative moment region of the 8 m long MRS system, were prepared to evaluate the structural performance of the continuous joint. According to the experimental results, all specimens which include the specimen with dapped ends designed by loads at the construction stage were failed in a flexural manner and showed the load carrying capacity over the nominal flexural strength. Therefore it is recommended that the dapped ends for MRS continuous joints be designed for the loads of the construction stage. And the shear key, which was installed on the top of rib for MRS slab, helps the enhancement of strength and especially deformation capacity.

  • This study proposes a Load Factors-based Analysis Model of Optimum Reliability for the High way bridge, which is most common type of structural design, and also proposes the theoretical bases of optimum nominal safety factors as well as optimum load and resistance factors based on the expected total cost minimization. Major 2nd moment reliability analysis and design theories including both MFOSM(Mean First Order 2nd Moment) Methods and AFOSM(Advanced First Order 2nd Moment) Methods are summarized and compared, and it has been found that Lind-Hasofer's approximate and an approximate Log-normal type reliability for mula are well suited for the proposed optimum reliability study.

  • Limit state design(LSD) principles employing load and resistance factor design(LRFD) are coming into use in geotechnical engineering community around the world. Current working (allowable) stress design principles are expected to be replaced by LRFH method in the near future. North America has recently adopted LRFD principles, and European community has also developed its own code called "Eurocode" based on partial safety factor design which is essentially the same as LRFD. Relevant review and analysis of new global design codes are prerequisites to adopting these codes in the Korean construction industry and in the Korean foundation design prac titre. This paper reviews geotechnical aspects of LRFD and Eurocode, and analyzes the geomaterial resistance factors in LRFD for the design of axially-loaded driven piles.

  • The Load and Resistance Factor Design(LRFD) Specification defines two sets of limiting width-to-thickness ratios. On the basis of these limiting values, steel sections are subdivided into three categories: compact, noncompact, and slender sections. In this paper, I-Type girders of a 2 span continuous steel bridge are divided into compact and non-compact sections and analyzed. In the design process, an optimization formulation was adopted and ADS, a Fortran program for Automated Design Synthesis, was used. In this study, we studied about change of the section between compact and non-compact using optimization formulation.

  • The objective of the present study is to provide statistical resistance statistics for steel-concrete composite plate girder sections under positive and negative moments. Statistical properties on yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, and fracture toughness of domestic structural steel products, gathered from an analysis of over 16,000 samples, were evaluated. Using the steel samples for the plate girder, the bias factor and the coefficient of variation of the ultimate flexural resistance for representative composite plate girder sections under positive and negative flexures were presented. In calculating the ultimate flexural resistance of the composite section, the moment curvature relationships were developed using the incremental load approach considering material nonlinearity for the steel girder. The predicted statistics can be used in the future for the efficient calibration of LRFD code.

  • Recently, the LRFD and the PSF based on structural reliability assessment have been applied to NPP designs in behalf of the conventional deterministic design methods. In the risk-informed structural integrity, it is especially possible to optimize design procedures considering cost, manufacturing and maintenance because the structural reliability concepts have confirmed the reliability for which a designer aims. Generally, in order to evaluate the PSF, the LRFD which is the design concept for evaluating safety factors respectively on the limit state function including load and resistance. This study certifies the concept and its applications of the PSF using the LRFD based on the structural reliability engineering.

  • Recent trends in design standards development in some European countries and U.S.A. have encouraged the use of probabilistic limit sate design concepts. Reliability based design criteria such as LSD, LRFD, PBLSD, adopted in those advanced countries have the potentials that they afford for symplifying the design process and placing it on a consistent reliability bases for various construction materials. A reliability based design criteria for RC flexural members are proposed in this study. Lind-Hasofer's invariant second-moment reliability theory is used in the derivation of an algorithmic reliability analysis method as well as an iterative determination of load and resistance factors. In addition, Cornell's Mean First-Order Second Moment Method is employed as a practical tool for the approximate reliability analysis and the derivation of design criteria. Uncertainty measures for flexural resistance and load effects are based on the Ellingwood's approach for the evaluation of uncertainties of loads and resistances. The implied relative safety levels of RC flexural members designed by the strength design provisions of the current standard code were evaluated using the second moment reliability analysis method proposed in this study. And then, resistance and load factors corresponding to the target reliability index(${\beta}=4$) which is considered to be appropriate level of reliability considering our practices are calculated by using the proposed methods. These reliability based factors were compared to those specified by our current ultimate strength design provisions. It was found that the reliability levels of flexural members designed by current code are not appropriate, and the code specified resistance and load factors were considerably different from the reliability based resistance and load factors proposed in this study.

  • A structural reliability analysis of fatigue truck model for fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule expressed as a function of various random variables affecting fatigue damage. Among the variables, the statistical parameters for equivalent moment, impact factor, and loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, whereas the parameters on fatigue strength, girder distribution factor, and headway factor of the measured data available in the literature were used. The effects of various fatigue truck models, fatigue life, ADTT, fatigue detail category, loadometer, and gross vehicle weight of fatigue truck on the reliability index of fatigue damage were analyzed. It is expected that the analytical results presented herein can be used as a basic background material in the calibration of both fatigue design truck and fatigue load factor of LRFD specification.

  • There is the need to balance safety, economy and serviceability in all phases of society problems. This is especially true in structural code formulation. where a framework is established by which practicing structural engineers can be assured of designing structures that reasonably meet the above three objectives. The existing design codes, which are generally based on the structural theory and certain engineering experience, do not realistically consider the uncertainties of loads and resistances and the basic reliability concepts. The purpose of the present study is therefore to develop the realistic reliability-based design criteria to secure adequate safety arid reliability, and to derive the models for partial and combined resistance factor formats. To this end, the reliability levels of our existing design code for concrete structures are first evaluated and the target reliabilities are determined, the new code formats are evolved from these target reliabilities. The present study indicates that the proposed formats exhibit relatively-uniform reliability and reasonably take into account the different material characteristics of concrete and steel in concrete structures.
