  • Recently it has been actively studied that the use of hybrid GFRP-concrete structure with dual purpose of both a permanent forwork and main tensile reinforcement of GFRP plank. In applying general analysis and design technique to evaluate the performance of hybrid structures with cast-in-place high strength concrete and GFRP plank, it is essential that the characteristics of the bond slip model is identified. In this study a simplified bilinear bond slip model for hybrid structure with GFRP plank and cast-in-place high strength concrete is proposed. Maximum average bond stress of simple bond slip relationship that has been proposed in this study is 3.29MPa, initial slope is 35.66MPa/mm, the total slip is 0.23mm and interfacial fracture energy is 0.37kN/m.

  • The fiber metal laminate is a type of hybrid materials laminated thin metallic sheets with fiber reinforced plastic sheets. The laminate has been researched or applied in automotive and aerospace industries due to their outstanding impact absorbing performance in view of light weight aspect. Specially, the replacement of side-impact beam as the fiber reinforced plastic has been researched actively. The objective of this paper is the primitive investigation in the development of side-door impact beam using the fiber metal laminate. First, the three-point bending simulations were conducted to decide the shape of impact beam using the numerical analysis. Next, two cases impact beam (pure DP 980 and fiber metal laminate) were installed in the side-door, and then the bending tests (according to FMVSS 214S) were simulated using the numerical analysis. It is noted that the side-door impact beam can be replaced with the fiber metal laminate sufficiently based on the numerical analysis results.

  • Ten high-strength concrete beam specimens, which have various combinations of different types of flexural reinforcement and short fibers were constructed and tested. Six beams were reinforced with two layers of steel, CFRP, and GFRP bar combinations. The other four beams were reinforced with two layers of single type CFRP and GFRP bars, with steel and synthetic short fibers. An investigation was performed on the influence of the parameters on the load-carrying capacity, post cracking stiffness, cracking pattern, deflection behavior, and ductility. The low post cracking stiffness, large deflection, deep crack propagation, large crack width, and low ductility of FRP bar-reinforced beams were controlled and improved by positioning steel bars in the inner layer of the FRP bar layer. In addition, the addition of fibers increased the first-cracking load, ultimate flexural strength, and ductility as well as the deep propagating cracks were controlled in the FRP bar-reinforced concrete beams. The increased ultimate concrete strain of fiber-reinforced concrete should be determined and considered when FRP bar-reinforced concrete members with fibers are designed.

  • Today, the guide line of the SFRC mix design and the construction was not embodied, and the convenience of the practical application on the spot is not good. In this research, hence, the program which is optimized to result the mix proportion by the flexural strength and toughness, was developed to apply with ease SFRC on the practical spot. This program would minimize the number of trial mixes and achieve an economical and appropriate mixture. In addition, the theoretical background on which the program is based, will be the basis of the embodied method to mixing SFRC. New algorithm, in this research, was used to develop the mix proportioning program of SFRC. The new algorithm is the Harmony Search which is the heuristic method mimicking the improvisation of music players. And, beside to single fiber reinforced concrete, it was developed the program about the hybrid fiber reinforced concrete that two kinds of steel fibers, which have the different geometry, was reinforced. This will be able to keep the world trend to study, hence, offers the basis of the next generation research.

  • The synthetic fibers such as polypropylene(PP) and polyvilyl-alcohol(PVA) fiber are poised as a low cost alternative for reinforcement in structural applications. It has been reported that synthetic fiber in cement composites can control restrained tensile stresses and cracks and increase toughness, resistance to impact, corrosion, fatigue and durability. High performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite(HPFRCCs) shows ultra high ductile behavior in the hardened state, because of the fiber bridging properties. Therefore, a variety of experiments have being performed to access the performance of HPFRCCs recently. The research emphasis is on the flexural behavior of HPFRCCs made in synthetic fibers, and how this affects the composite property, and ultimately its strain-hardening performance. Three-point bending tests on HPFECCs are carried out. As the result of the bending tests, HPFRCCs showed high flexural strength and ductility. HPFRCCs made in PVA or Hybrid fiber were, also, superior to PP of singleness. On the other hand, effect of sand volume fraction on HPFRCCs made in PP was insignificant.

  • The objective of the current study is to evaluate the effects depending on the types of reinforcing fibers being influential in view of mechanical properties and impact resistance of hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) for applications to precast concrete structure. Hybrid fibers applied therefor were three types such as PP/MSF (polypropylene fiber+macro synthetic fiber), PVA/MAF (polyvinyl alcohol fiber+MSF) and JUTE/MSF (natural jute fiber+MSF), where the volume fraction of PP, PVA and natural jute was applied with 0.2 %, respectively, while based on 0.05 % volume fraction of MSF. The HFRC was tested for slump, compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance. The test result demonstrated that mixture of such hybrid fibers improve compressive strength, flexural strength and impact resistance of concrete. Moreover, it was found that HFRCs to which hydrophilic fibers, i.e. PVA/MSF and JUTE/MSF, were mixed show more improved features that HFRC to which non-hydrophilic fiber, i.e. PP/MSF was mixed. Meanwhile, the finding that PVA/MSF HFRC exhibited better performance than JUTE/MSF HFRC was attributed from the former having higher aspect ratio than that of the latter.

  • In this study, the effect of hybrid fiber reinforcement on the residual strength and impact resistance of high-strength cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures was investigated. A cementitious composites was manufactured in which 0.15 vol% of polypropylene fiber (PP) and 1.0 vol% of smooth steel fiber (SSF) were double-mixed, and a residual strength test was conducted while thermal stress was applied by heating test, and then a high-velocity impact test was performed. In the case of general cementitious composites, the rear surface is damaged due to explosion and low tensile strength during high temperature or impact, while hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious composites can repeatedly absorb and distribute stress until multiple fibers are damaged to suppress the propagation of impact and resistance to explosion. Therefore, this study analyzed the residual strength of cementitious composites exposed to high temperatures depending on whether hybrid fibers were mixed or not, and collected research data on fracture behavior through high-speed impact tests to evaluate impact resistance and mechanical properties.

  • Along the fire resisting capacity of high strength concrete has been brought up as a social issue, and the Ministry of Land also had notified the control standard about it, the researches for improving the fire resisting capacity have been considerably activated these days. In this study, we performed a research for developing a high strength concrete, contains the fiber cocktail, which is a hybrid of polypropylene fiber as organic matter, and steel fiber. As we analyzed the temperature of the steel part during the fire test with 100 MPa high strength concrete, there was a tendency that the lower temperature comes out with the larger cross section, and the $600{\times}600mm$, $800{\times}800mm$ cross sectioned can secure the fire resistance capability, so the $600{\times}600mm$ is deducted as the optimal size if we consider the double economic feasibility. As well, among them the best qualified $600{\times}600mm$ shapes, the fiber cocktail hybrid of $1.5kg/m^3$ PP fiber and $40kg/m^3$ of steel, comes out the best ratio.

  • Stretchable strain sensors have been developed for potential future applications including wearable devices and health monitoring. For practical implementation of stretchable strain sensors, their stability and repeatability are one of the important aspects to be considered. In this work, we utilized 3D printed polymer structures having kirigami patterns to improve the stretchability and reduce the hysteresis. The polymer structures were coated with graphene/carbon nanofiber hybrids to make a robust electrical network. The stretchable strain sensors showed a high gauge of 36 at a strain of 32%. Because of the kirigami structures and the robust graphene/carbon nanofiber coating, the sensors also exhibited stable resistance responses at various strains ranging from 1% to 30%.
