Trends and Directions in the Development of Wastewater Reclamation and Reuse Technology for Alternative Water Resources (대체수자원 확보를 위한 하수 재이용 기술 동향과 발전방향)

  • Reuse of wastewater will intensify in the coming decades due to water shortage, the change of climatic conditions, the need for industrial and agricultural use and the necessity of improving health and environmental conditions for the growing population. This paper considers (a) the status and trends of wastewater reuse and reclamation in the world, (b) case studies of wastewater reuse projects, (c) analysis of technology level, (d) forecast of global market, and (e) the future views and directions in development of wastewater reuse technologies. Based on the available documented literature, this paper provides a review assessment of the current status of the wastewater treatment processes including potential applications for reuse. Key challenges for both wastewater treatment and reuse are also discussed in the paper and include recommendations, e.g. cost, effluent water quality, energy use and technical solutions, for future developments.

Evaluation Methodology and Comprehensive Performance Evaluation for Optimization of BNR Wastewater Treatment (BNR 하수처리 최적화를 위한 평가방법론 및 Comprehensive Performance Evaluation)

  • A BNR comprehensive performance evaluation (BNR CPE) system was established employing system-oriented evaluation methodology for biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes based on the CPE techniques developed by U.S. EPA for evaluation of conventional biological processes. The BNR CPE system applied to five domestic BNR plants adopting $A^2/O$ process confirmed that all target plants except the smallest one had not any serious defective performance and process stability was enhanced with increasing plant size. The system also clearly verified relatively poor performances in anoxic reactors without exception mainly due to influent carbon limit rather than functional defect. Consistent good performances were confirmed even during both winter season and wet weather generally known to be difficult to achieve satisfactory removals. Presentation of evaluation results by modified radar chart system simplified and clarified the evaluation and analysis procedures. The BNR CPE system could not only discover readily the causes of present and prospective poor performances but also facilitate the suggestion of their optimization options. Mutual effect and cause-and-effect among operation parameters and unit processes were also found easily using the evaluation system. The system justified that the adverse effect of defective operating parameters could be compensated by other favorable parameters, especially in anaerobic and anoxic reactors as well as during the winter season.

  • 최근 수자원개발의 한계와 수질의 오염으로 인하여 제한된 수자원의 적절한 배분과 지속 가능한 수자원의 이용이라는 문제가 크게 대두되고 있어 개발의 한계 속에서 수질을 보존하기 위한 노력이 필요한 시점이다. 그러나, 수량과 수질을 동시에 고려할 수 있는 수자원계획 도구는 흔치 않다. 이러한 종합적인 수자원계획 수립 및 분석을 위할 도구를 개발하기 위하여 한국건설기술연구원에서는 SEI-B(Stockholm Environment Institute - Boston Center)와 공동으로 기존에 SEI-B에서 개발된 WEAP(Water Evaluation And Planning System)을 국내 실정에 맞도록 수정보완 한 K-WEAP을 개발하였었다. 이를 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 K-WEAP에 수질 모의 기능을 추가하여 개발함으로써 수량-수질을 연계하여 수자원계획수립이 가능하도록 하였다. 개발된 K-WEAP은 원단위 개념을 이용한 발생량의 산정과 보존성 물질의 수질 모의와 일반적인 지수감소형 물질 및 BOD, DO 등과 같은 1차 분해성 물질의 모의가 가능하다. 이러한 기능을 이용하여 수자원 계획 시 수질등급을 만족시키기 위한 하수처리장의 설치 계획과 유역관리를 위한 여러 가지 대안의 수립이 가능하며, 여러 가지 대안에 대하여 장래 수질의 변화 경향을 비교 분석할 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공한다. 본 연구에서는 K-WEAP에 탑재된 수질 모형의 내용을 분석하고 수량과 수질의 통합과정을 알아본 후, 가상의 시험유역에 적용한 길과를 바탕으로 수량-수질 통합수자원계획의 적용성을 살펴보았다,

Filamentous Bacteria Found in Rotating Biological Contactors Treating Domestic Wastewater (생활하수를 처리하는 회전원판체에서 발견된 사상세균)

  • Slime sampless from 10 ratating biological contactor (RBC) plants in New Jersey were microscopically examined. Filamentous bacteria such as Type 1701, Type 0041, Type 021N, Nocardia, Beggiatoa, and Sphaerotilus, which are commonly present as suspended forms also were found in RBC slimes growing as attached forms. However, the abundance wwas much different from that of activated sludge. In RBC slimes, Beggiatoa was most frequently observed filamentous bacteria and Sphaerotilus, Type 0041, Type 1701, Type 021N and Nocardia were present in decreasing order of abundance. There were morphologically two different types of Behhiatia in RBC slimes. The statistical anaysis shows that filamentous bacterial poulations between the 100 cm inside and the outside the RBC were different in most cases with significant interactions between the location and stage.

  • The Tolosa-Hunt syndrome is one of the rare disease with facial, especially peri-orbital pain, and ophthalomoplegia associated mostly with granulomatous lesions in cavernous sinus or superior orbital fissure. In addition to ophthalmoplegia by multiple cranial nerve involvement, the sympathetic nervous system may also be involved leading to Horner's syndrome. A typical Tolosa-Hunt syndrome has a neuro-radiologic finding of an increased density in the involved region, and a laboratory finding of an elevated ESR, as well as a dramatic response to systemic corticosteroid therapy. An unusual case of the Tolosa-Hunt syndrome with normal radiologic and laboratory findings, unresponsive to systemic corticosteroid, and some response of pain relief to a stellate ganglion block, is presented.

  • 본 논문에서는 Unmaned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)를 이용하여 양식어장에 유입될 수 있는 적조 모니터링에 대한 연구를 실시하였다. 적조는 한반도 주변 해역을 포함한 전 세계 연안 지역에서 물고기의 집단 폐사, 해안구조물에 대한 물리적 손상등과 같이 사회 경제적인 피해를 야기 시켜왔고, 최근 해수면 온도상승과 같은 기후 변화에 의한 영향으로 증가되고 있는 실정이다. 특히 남해안과 같이 생활하수가 다량 유입되고 저층에 퇴적된 영양물질이 용출되는 곳에서 상습적으로 발생한다. 1995년에 발생한 코클로디니움에 의한 적조는 764억원의 기록적인 피해를 입히면서, 적조에 대한 신속한 대응과 효과적인 방제작업의 필요성이 대두되었다. 이렇게 양식어장 운영에 다양한 문제가 발생이 된 후 대응하는 것보다 모니터링을 통해 사전에 유입을 차단하고 대처하는 연구가 필요하고 판단된다. 원격탐사를 활용한 적조 탐지 및 모니터링 연구는 UAV에서 취득한 RGB color 영상을 통한 적조 추출 및 분석, 시계열 분석을 위한 영상자료 수집, 현장관측 자료와 위성영상에서 추출한 클로로필 농도 비료글 통해 이루어 졌다. 또한 매년 발생하는 적조생물에 관한 속성정보를 통해 적조발생지역에 대한 적조생물종과 국내 연안에서 발생한 적조의 발생 범위 등의 정보를 지리정보기반에 의한 공간분석을 실시하였다.

The treatment of sewage using DAF pump system with micro bubble and non-powered flotation tank (응집제 자동혼합형 미세기포 발생장치와 무동력 부상분리조를 이용한 하수의 처리)

  • Although DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) has been successfully accepted for water and wastewater treatment, the fundamental characteristics of the process have not been fully investigated. Water is saturated with compressed air to dissolve the air into the water at high pressure in saturation tank. Then the water containing dissolved air is released into a floatation tank at a lower pressure, generating micro-bubbles that rise gently through the water and carry the suspended matter to the surface. This study investigated the removal of sewage using automatic mixture type DAF pump and non-powered flotation tank. Characteristics of two devices were compared and analyzed with samples. The results showed that the PAC exhibited higher performance than other coagulants. When air dosage was 2.5ml/l/min, treatment was stable in operation. In the DAF pump with a pressure of 4 atm., the average size of bubbles was 36.2${\mu}m$. Removal efficiency of SS was 80%. At this time removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, of T-N was 30% and T-P was 70% in stable operation. It was concluded that DAF pump system with micro bubble performed higher efficiencies compared to general DAF system for treating wastewater.

Employment Experiences of Nurses Caring for Foreign Patients (외국인 환자를 돌보는 간호사의 업무경험)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify employment experiences of nurses caring for hospitalized foreign patients. Methods: For this study, 10 nurses caring for foreign patients for more than 6 months were chosen purposively. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews from July to September 2013 and analyzed in terms of Giorgi's phenomenological methodology. Results: Five themes-clusters were identified from fifteen themes; 1) Awesome challenges; 2) Laborious dealing with barriers; 3) Acceptance of cultural differences; 4) Complete concentration of personal energy; 5) Taking a powerful step towards tomorrow. Conclusion: Results of this study reveal the significance of nurses' experiences in caring for foreign patients for the first time in Korea. The following are suggested: First, facilitation and training is necessary for language proficiency, communication skills and ability to understand cultural traits of foreign patients. Second, manuals and international guidelines for caring for foreign patients should be systematically developed to improve quality of healthcare services.

The Characteristics of Ozonizer using Dielectric Barrier Discharge and Water Quality Improvement (유전체 장벽 방전에 의한 오존발생기의 오존생성 및 하수 수질개선 특성)

  • 본 연구에서는 Air 및 Oxygen을 원료가스 사용하여 원통형 오존발생기의 오존생성농도를 측정하여 오존발생량 및 오존생성 수율을 계산하였다. 오존발생기에서 발생된 오존을 오존접촉조내의 원수 30[L]에 기상 오존주입량 3[g/$m^3$]를 투입하여 오존접촉 시간의 변화에 따른 오존접촉 실험 6일 후의 녹조 특성을 조사하였다. 오존생성특성 결과 원료가스가 Air인 경우, 최대오존생성 농도는 유량 1.0[$\ell$/min] 에서 5.5[g/$m^3$], 최대오존발생량은 유량 5.0[$\ell$/min] 에서 1.0[g/h]를 얻을 수 있었고, 원료가스가 Oxygen인 경우, 최대오존생성농도는 유량 1.0[$\ell$/min] 에서 51.5[g/$m^3$], 최대오존발생량은 유량 4.0[$\ell$/min] 에서 4.5[g/h]를 얻을 수 있었다. 오존접촉 실험 6일 후에서 원수와 오존접촉시간 1분에서 녹조 현상을 관찰할 수 있었고 나머지 오존접촉시간에 따른 오존 처리 수에서는 녹조 생성을 관찰할 수 없었다.

Development of Amalgamated Septic Tank using Mineral Sintered Body (광물 소결체를 이용한 합병정화조 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study was introduced an amalgamated septic tank system using mineral sintered body was made from non-metallic minerals with a ability being attached or accelerating a vitality of soil microorganism for the effective wastewater treatment. Experimentally, we made an amalgamated septic tank appling anaerobic-aerobic process experimental facilities to two personal houses for handling a residental sewage directly on a small scale from the place of origin. The results are shown as follows; The COD\ulcorner and BOD of effluent were about 10 mg/l after the treatments and T-N removal efficiency was 60-70%. Moreover these results suggested the possibility of denitrification without adding organics and more than 80% of T-P removal also showed the possibility of wastewater treatment biologically.
