As an innovative effort to secure economically viable heat recovery system, various fin shapes for industrial fin-tube heat exchangers have been studied for better performance. In this study, the waste gas heat recovery from four different fin shapes was experimentally performed for heat transfer rate and pressure drop. According to the tested results, the twist and wavy shape fins of rectangular type show the superior performance in terms of Goodness factor and jH/f factor ratio, whereas the circular spiral fin shows the inferior values. Experimental results shows good comparison with the numerical results with a slight discrepancy of 5%, which is quite resonable.
Air-side forced convective heat transfer of a plate fin-tube heat exchanger is investigated by experimental measurement and numerical computation. The heat exchanger consists of staggered arrangement of refrigerant pipes of 10.2 m diameter and the pitch of fins is 3.5 m. In the experimental study, the forced convective heat transfer is measured at Reynolds number of 1082, 1397, 1486, 1591 and 1649 based on diameter of refrigerant piping and mean velocity. Average Nusselt number for the convective heat transfer coefficient is also computed for the same Reynolds number by commercial software of STAR-CD with standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. It is found that the relative errors of average Nusselt numbers between experimental and numerical data are less than 6 percentage in Reynolds number of $1082{\sim}1649$. The errors between experiment and other correlations are ranged from 7% to 32.4%. But the correlation of Kim at al is closest to the experimental data within 7% of the relative error.
A study on frost prevention of fin-tube heat exchanger is experimently performed by spreading antifreezing solution on heat exchanger surface. It is desirable that the antifreezing solution spreads completely on the surface forming thin liquid film to prevent frost nucleation and crystal growth and to reduce the thermal resistance across the liquid film. A small amount of antifreezing solution falls in drops on heat exchanger surface using two types of supplying devices, and a porous layer coating technique is adopted to enhance the wettedness of antifreezing solution on the surface. It is observed that the antifreezing solution liquid film prevents fin-tube heat exchanger from frosting, and heat transfer performance does not degrade through the frosting tests. The concentration of supplied antifreezing solution can be determined by heat transfer analysis of the first row of heat exchanger to avoid antifreezing solution freezing due to dilution by moisture absorption.
In vapor compression systems which use refrigerant as a working fluid, the oil is commonly used for compressor lubrication. Since the presence of lubrication oil can change the characteristics properties of refrigerant, the oil affects the heat transfer performance of heat exchanger to a large extent. In this paper, we focus on the effect of PVE oil experimentally on heat transfer performance of the fin-tube heat exchangers which use R410A as a refrigerant. To evaluate the heat transfer performance, the refrigerant to air type test facility chamber has been used. Fin-tube heat exchanger with grooved has been tested while according to the oil mass fraction variation from nearly zero to 1.7 wt%. It was found that the low level of oil mass fraction has an obvious effect on heat transfer performance, while the high level seems no significant influence. The influence of the oil mass fraction to heat transfer performance, however, is different between evaporation and condensation.
As an effort to secure economically viable heat recovery units, innovative fin shapes for industrial boilers are studied for better performance. In the present study a numerical modeling for the analysis of heat exchanger performance is conducted using a commercial software, ANSYS CFX and the results are compared with the experimental data. Out of several candidate fin shapes curved wavy fin is selected for the present study. Both numerical and experimental data are directly compared for heat transfer rate and pressure drop with the assumed constant surface temperature of $60^{\circ}C$. Exhaust gas is obtained from a test apparatus which supplies variable flow rates. The numerical results show reasonable agreements with the experimental data within 10% in terms of both total heat transfer and pressure loss.
Among the various factors that cause the performance decrease of heat exchangers used in many industries, flow path blocking is one of the important and serious factor. In order to solve this problem, proper maintenance and management of the heat exchanger is important and emphasized. In this study, we developed and algorithm that can quantitatively determine and diagnose the normal and blocked areas of fin-tube heat exchanger using pattern analysis, Gaussian Edge Detection, Image Processing and Affine Transformation techniques. The developed algorithms was applied to the actual heat exchanger and the performance was evaluated by comparing with the manual results. From these results, it was proved that the developed algorithm is effective in evaluating the pollution ratio of the fin-tube heat exchanger.
To investigate the design effects of a heat exchanger on a tube type, a tube circuit and a fin pitch, an experimental study on the heat transfer characteristics of finned- tube evaporators was performed. The refrigerant was R-22. A refrigerant loop was established to measure the heat transfer rate, the air heat transfer coefficient. The experimental results showed that the heat transfer characteristics of the evaporators were affected by the design parameters. And the heat transfer rate of the slit fin was better about 25%, compared to those of the louver fin. In the present experimental range, the heat transfer performance with the straight tube circuit was more remarkable than that of the zigzag tube circuit, as seen from temperature variations of the evaporator exit. $\jmath$-factor on the tube type, the tube circuit and the fin pinch decreased, as increasing Reynolds number.
