  • The effect of rice bran (RB) applied alone or in combination with chemical fertilizer at different application rate on the phytochemical and antioxidant properties of rice was investigated. The treatments were 3 levels of RB namely: 200% RB (500 kg $10a^{-1}$), 100% RB (250 kg $10a^{-1}$), 50% RB (125 kg $10a^{-1}$), Recommended fertilizer dose (RF: $N-{P_2}{O_5}{K_2}O$, 11-5.5-4.8 kg $10a^{-1}$) combined with each RB, Half-recommended fertilizer dose (HRF: $N-{P_2}{O_5}{K_2}O$, 5.5-2.75-2.4 kg $10a^{-1}$) combined with each RB, RF and HRF applied at 1, 5, 10 days before rice transplanting (DBT). The parameters investigated were antioxidant, phytosterol and fatty acid contents. Results showed that the antioxidant property and phytosterol contents were high at 10 DBT HRF plus RB, 5 DBT RF plus RB, and 1 DBT 100 and 200% RB. However, total polyphenols increased from 10 to 1 DBT. In the case of fatty acids, no general trend was observed between treatments at different application times. Linoleic acid was high at 10 DBT HRF plus RB while linolenic acid was not affected at different application times. Palmitoeic and oleic acids were not also affected at 5 and 10 DBT. Saturated fatty acids were not also affected by any treatment at different application times except for palmitic acid. Most parameters obtained higher values at 100 and 200% RB treatments in 1 DBT.

  • Seasonal occurrence of Japanese gall-forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi Haga et Okajima, and its damage pattern on leaves and fruits were studied at sweet persimmon orchards in Gimhae (orchard A, B) and Changwon, Gyeongnam. Korea in 2002 and 2003. Monitoring adults by yellow sticky traps and inspecting each developmental stage in damaged rolled-leaves revealed that the overwintered adults moved to sweet persimmon orchard from late April to late May, and oviposited inside the rolled leaves. Adults developed from the eggs showed peak occurrence of the first generation adults in early to mid June. Inspection of rolled leaves indicated that the peak occurrences of eggs, nymphs, and pupae of the first generation took place in early to mid May, late May to early June, and early June, respectively. Each developmental stage showed the second small peaks in the late season. Results suggest that most thrips live a single generation per year, but a small portion may develop to the second generation in persimmon orchards. The percent of damaged leaves was highest in Changwon orchard at 9.7% in early June. Percentage of damaged fruits increased from 0.84% in early June to 30.2% in early September in Gimhae B orchard. It was found that the closer the persimmon trees were to the edge of the orchard, the worse damaged the leaves were. Appropriate timing for incorporation of control measures were discussed in relation to the seasonal occurrence of adults.

  • Occurrence of Japanese gall-forming thrips, Ponticulothrips diospyrosi was surveyed from 143 orchards at 11 cities or counties in 6 provinces, Korea from 2008 to 2009. Occurrence of P. diospyrosi was not observed from Jeju (4 persimmon orchards) in Jeju-do and Wanju (12 persimmon orchards) in Jeollabuk-do. However, P. diospyrosi occurred newly in the orchards in Sanchung, Gyeongsangnam-do and in Gangreung, Gangwon-do. Rate of damaged orchards by P. diospyrosi in Gumi, Mungyeong, Sangju and Euseong in Gyeongsangbuk-do (73.3%) was higher than that of in Gyeongsangnam-do or Youngdong areas in Chungcheongbuk-do. A maximum rate of damaged trees by P. diospyrosi was 23.5% in Gumi, while the damage was lower in Sancheong and Jinju representing 0.2 and 1.6%, respectively. Rate of damaged leaves by P. diospyrosi was the highest in Sangju (0.12%). P. diospyrosi occurred between $N35^{\circ}07'50"$ and $35^{\circ}51'24"$ and between $E127^{\circ}38'36"$ to $128^{\circ}53'02"$. Persimmon orchards close to mountain were more damaged by P. diospyrosi. Edge parts of persimmon orchards were more damaged by P. diospyrosi than inner parts, especially in orchards close to mountain. Also, the middle and lower parts of tree canopy were more damaged by P. diospyrosi than the upper parts of canopy.

  • This study was conducted to develop economic injury level (EIL) of sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci, on oriental melon. In greenhouse, seedlings of oriental melon were transplanted at June 8, 2010 and we inoculated adult B. tabaci with the density of 0, 1, 5, 10, or 20 per ten leaves at July 14. Adult of B. tabaci increased approximately twenty five-fold at 60 days after inoculation in the plot of 20 adults per ten leaves. The damages on leaves and fruits by B. tabaci were started to appear at 20 days after inoculation, and the damage rates of leaves or fruits were 28.5 or 31.5 percent at 60 days after inoculation, respectively, in the plot of inoculation with 20 adults per ten leaves. The yield of oriental melon was reduced as the inoculation density of B. tabaci increased, and the relationship between inoculation density of B. tabaci and the rate of damaged fruit could be described by a linear regression Y = 0.961x + 0.0562 ($R^2$ = 0.976). Based on the relationship, the economic injury level was 5.1 adults of B. tabaci per leaf and the control threshold estimated by 80% level of economic injury level was 4.1 adults per leaf for control of sweet potato whitefly.

  • This study was carried out to find out the effects of ammonia gas on the leaf destruction of vegetable crops, and nitrogen contents in their leaves. Radish, chinese cabbage, tomato and cucumber were fumigated with 0.05, 0.1, $0.2mg/{\ell}$ ammonia gas for 2 hrs under different exposure time, light and soil water condition at vegetative growth stage. The results obtained were as follows. The crop damages measured by percentage of leaf destruction were more severe at the night time fumigation than treatment during the day, at the full sun condition than the shading, and at the higher soil water contents. Cucumber plant showed higher resistance to ammonia gas than tomato plant. The chrolophyll contents in leaves of each crops were remarkably decreased by increment of ammonia concentration from $0.05mg/{\ell}$ to $0.2mg/{\ell}$, but the N content in them was increased.

  • Economic injury levels and economic thresholds were estimated for the american serpentine leafminer (Liriomyza trifolii) on greenhouse eggplant. Liriomyza trifolii density was increased until the late June and decreased after the July in innoculation on may 17. Growth of an aerial plants and fruits were not different in treatment respectively. But total number of fruits and yields were decreased on higher inoculation density. Whereas the rate of yield loss was increased. The rates of damaged leaf by L. trifolii were increased on higher inoculation density and the peak was 65%. The number of commodity fruits and the rates of commodity fruit were become lower than non-treatment (72.2%). The rates of damaged leaf area were 5.3, 11.7, 19.7, 25.7% on inoculation densities and the rates of yield loss were 0.6, 4.8, 9.8, 14.7%, respectively. There existed close correlation between rate of yield loss and inoculation density (Y = 0.76779X + 0.298354, $R^2\;=\;0.9599$). Considerated of the results, the economic injury levels of L. trifolii on eggplant greenhouse was 6.1 adults per 4 plant and the economic thresholds was 4.9 adults per 4 plant.

  • Seedlings of 6 tree species were treated with artificial acid rain and acid mist (pH 5.0, 4.0, 3.0) and ground water (pH 6.5), to select $SO_2$-resistant tree species. The growth variable, leaf injury rate and chlorophyll content were measured and compared among the various pH levels. Seedling height of Rosy multiflora decreased with deceasing pH levels of artificial acid rain and was tallest at control plot, but that of Ailanthus altissima was tallest at pH 5.0 plot. For the seedlings of Robinia pseudoacacia, Magnolia obovata and Wistaria floribunda, top and root dry weights per seedling at pH 5.0 plot were higher than those at control plot. Leaf injury rate(injured leaf area and injured leaf rate) increased with decreasing pH levels of artificial acid rain, the changes of leaf chlorophyll content was slightly different among tree species. Leaf chlorophyll content of Rosa multiflora, measured during the period July to September, decreased with decreasing pH levels of artificial acid rain. Leaf chlorophyll content of Magnolia obovata increased on July, but decreased severely on September, with decreasing pH levels, of artificial acid rain.

  • This study aimed to estimate control thresholds for managing common cutworm, Spodoptera litura Faricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) at different larval densities and growth stages of Chinese cabbage in field conditions. The percent yield reduction (Y) of Chinese cabbage infested by different densities of S. litura (X, no. of larvae/100 plants) for three weeks were estimated by Y=-21.85X+1300 (R2=0.997) 5 days after transplanting and Y=-12.1X+1382 (R2=0.998) 20 days after transplanting. Based on the relationships between the densities of S. litura larvae and the yield index of chinese cabbage, the number of larvae (2nd to 3rd instar) which caused 5% loss of yield was estimated as 2.9/100 plants 5 days after transplanting, and 5.6/100 plants 20 days after transplanting.
