  • Since cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) has large specific surface area and high water holding capacity, it is very difficult task to remove water from the CNF suspension. However, dewatering of CNF suspension is a prerequisite of following processes such as mat forming and drying for the application of CNF. In this study, we evaluated the drainage of cellulose fibers suspension under vacuum and pressure conditions depending on the number of grinding passes. Also, the effect of the addition of cationic polyelectrolyte on dewatering ability of CNF suspension was investigated. Regardless of dewatering condition, the total drained water amount as well as the drainage rate were decreased with an increase in the number of grinding passes. Pressure dewatering equipment enables us to prepare wet CNF mat with relatively higher grammage. The cationic polyelectrolytes improved the dewatering ability of CNF suspension by controlling the zeta potential of CNF. The fast drainage was obtained when CNF suspension had around neutral zeta potential.

Lyocell 섬유소재의 알칼리 팽윤과 피브릴화 거동 (Swelling and Fibrillation of Lyocell Fibers in Water and NaOH Solution)

  • Swelling and fibrillation of two kinds of lyocell, $Tencel^{(R)}$ and $Lyocell^{(R)}$, were investigated using polarizing and scanning electron microscope (SEM). $Tencel^{(R)}$ of a representative lyocell showed that loop tenacity which is related to wrinkle and resilience of fiber does not show significant reduction in wet state. Two kinds of lyocell exhibited surprising degree of swelling in aqueous NaOH solution under free tension. Diameters of $Tencel^{(R)}$ and $Lyocell^{(R)}$ swelled up to 670% and 830%, respectively in the range of around 10% NaOH concentration. Molecular orientation estimated by birefringence also reduced remarkably in alkaline solution. Moreover, diameter and birefringence which changed in alkaline solution did not recovered to original level even after washing and drying. Fibrillation of $Lyocell^{(R)}$ fiber observed by SEM seems to be easier than that of $Tencel^{(R)}$. In order to understand the difference between $Tencel^{(R)}$ and $LyoceJl^{(R)}$, further study on the structure of the two fibers will be followed.

  • In this work, the surface of hydrophilic cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) was modified precisely by varying amounts of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to produce CNF-based particle surfactants. We found that a critical CTAB density was required to generate amphiphilic CTAB-grafted CNF (CNF-CTAB). Compared to pristine CNF, CNF-CTAB was highly efficient at stabilizing oil-in-water Pickering emulsions. To evaluate their effectiveness as particle surfactants, the surface coverage of oil-in-water emulsion droplets was determined by changing the CNF-CTAB concentration in the aqueous phase. Furthermore, styrene-in-water stabilized by CNF-CTAB surfactants was thermally polymerized to produce CNF-stabilized polystyrene (PS) particles, offering a great potential for various applications including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and petrochemicals.

마이크로피브릴화 셀룰로오스(MFC)/프로폴리스 첨가 PLA 필름 제조 및 특성 분석 (Manufacture and Characterization of Microfibrillated Cellulose (MFC)/Propolis-Incorporated PLA Films)

  • The study aimed to enhance the properties of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and biocompatible substitute for fossil-based plastics. Since the applicability of PLA has been limited because of its toughness and brittleness, microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) and propolis were introduced into PLA. As a result, the PLA film with MFC/propolis showed significant improvements in mechanical strength, elongation, and storage modulus, while also experiencing a decrease in the glass transition temperature. Additionally, the presence of polyphenols in propolis led to a reduction in light transmittance in the UV wavelength range. These enhancements are attributed to MFC tightly bonding with PLA polymers, and propolis acting as a plasticizer and mediator between MFC and PLA, preventing agglomeration. These reinforced PLA films have the potential to be used in flexible packaging for light-sensitive products.

나노셀룰로오스가 시멘트복합체의 역학적 특성 및 자기수축 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Nanocellulose on the Mechanical and Self-shrinkage Properties of Cement Composites)

  • 최근 셀룰로오스 나노피브릴과 셀룰로오스나노크리스탈과 같은 나노셀룰로오스는 관심의 초점이 되고 있다. 나노셀룰로오스의 표면에 있는 수산기는 고분자복합체의 보강재로 사용함에 있어서 적합한 기능을 소유하고 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서 나노셀룰로오스를 시멘트복합체 제조에 있어서 보강재로서 사용하였다. 나노셀룰로오스는 TEMPO 산화에 의한 전처리과정을 거친 후, 균질화 및 초음파처리에 의해서 제조되었고, 투과전자현미경으로 나노셀룰로오스를 분석한 결과 직경이 10에서 15 nm 범위로 나타났다. 0.5% 나노셀룰로오스가 함유된 시멘트복합체의 압축강도를 기존 시멘트복합체와 비교하였으며 특히, 인장강도와 휨강도가 기존 시멘트복합체에 비해서 각각 49.7%와 38.8% 개선되었다. 그리고 나노셀룰로오스가 혼합된 시멘트복합체의 자기수축률은 타설 후 1일 경과 시 18.9%, 28일 경과 시 5.9%의 저감효과가 나타났다.

  • 제한공간에서 형성되는 폴리(트리메틸렌 테레프탈레이트) (PTT)의 결정구조를 광학현미경, 소각 광산란 및 X-선 회절로 조사하였다. 인자 $\delta$로 대표할 수 있는 배제 성분의 이동거리는 폴리(에틸렌 테레프탈레이트) (PET/PTT) 블렌드의 형태구조 패턴을 결정하는데 중요한 역할을 하였다. 단계 결정화할 경우, PTT 결정화는 앞서 성장한 PET 결정의 구정 사이 영역에서 시작되었으며, 구정 사이 영역이 채워질 때까지 진행하였다. PET 구정 표면은 PTT 결정화에 매우 효과적인 핵 생성 작용을 유도함으로써 transcrystalline 구조의 PTT 결정을 유도하였다. 그 결과 PTT가 많은 상에서 전형적인 구정 구조와 함께 transcrystalline구조가 혼재하는 독특한 형태구조가 관찰되었다. PET 구정의 라멜라 사이나 피브릴 사이의 영역에서는 공간적 제한으로 인하여 PTT분자들의 형태 자유도가 감소하였으며, 이러한 감소 요인은 PET구정 내ㆍ외부에서의 PTT 결정화와 용융 거동에 차이를 유발하였다.

ECH(Epichlorohydrine)으로 처리한 리오셀 직물의 피브릴레이션 경향 및 염색성에 관한 연구 (Fibrillation tendency and Dyeing characteristic of Lyocell treated with Epichlorohydrine)

  • Lyocell is a not only environmentally-friendly but also very advantageous fiber. When Lyocell is soaked in water, its wet tenacity does not decrease and elongation and moisture regain of it are better than cotton. However, one drawback of lyocell is its fibrillation. The fibrills of lyocell were generated during wet process such as scouring and dyeing deteriorates the dyeing color depth and the appearance of fabric. The purpose of this study was to decrease the fibrillation tendency of lyocell fabric using crosslinking agent, epichlorohydrine(ECH). The effects of NaOH scouring and ECH crosslinking were observed. The different types of ECH addition methods to lyocell and the various concentrations of ECH in crosslinking reaction onto dyeing characteristic and fibriallation were investigated. Weight loss and whiteness index of crosslinked lyocell by ECH were examined. K/S values of ECH treated lyocell fabrics dyed with reactive dye were measured and SEM images of untreated and treated lyocells were observed extensively to define the fibrillation tendency. The results were as follows ; 1) ECH treatment showed the effect of weight loss and scouring because ECH crosslinking reaction was conducted in alkaline condition. 2) The increase in ECH concentration from 5 to 30% does not affected K/S value changes. 3) ECH crosslinking can effectively prevent the fibrillation tendency of lyocell.

LbL 다층흡착에 의한 나노피브릴화 셀룰로오스의 표면 개질과 현탁액의 탈수성에 미치는 영향 (Surface Modification of Nanofibrillated Cellulose by LbL (Layer-by-Layer) Multilayering and its Effect on the Dewatering Ability of Suspension)

  • In this study, we modified the surface of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) through LbL (Layer-by-Layer) multilayering process with polyelectrolytes and investigated the effects of the NFC modification on the charge of NFC surface and the dewatering ability of NFC suspension. The multilayering process was done onto NFC fibers using polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and poly-sodium 4-styrene sulfonate (PSS) under different dosage and washing conditions. When the washing was carried out in every adsorption stage, the modified NFC had strong cationic or anionic charge depending on the type of polyelectrolyte in the outermost layer and the dewatering ability was not affected. In the case of no washing treatment or washing in the final adsorption stage, however, the zeta potential of NFC was close to an isoelectric point so that the dewatering ability increased remarkably. Low addition level of polyelectrolytes also showed the similar results. The mixing of NFC suspensions with opposite charge resulted in higher network strength and improved dewatering ability due to the flocculation.

리오셀 직물 수지가공 효과와 염색성 (Dyeing Properties Resin Treatment Effects of the Lyocell Fabrics)

  • The effects of resin finish and dyeabilities of four kinds of Iyocell fabrics that were manufactured by four kinds of pulps were investigated. The dyeabilities of Iyocell fabrics were similar, but differed from cotton fabric. In early stage of 30 minutes, cotton fabric was shown higher dye exhaustion ratio than Iyocell fabrics, however after then cotton fabric did not increase dye exhaustion, Iyocell fabrics increased continuously. At last, the dye exhaustion ratio of Iyocell fabrics were about 75% and that of cotton fabric was 65%. Two kinds of experimental procedures were applied for Iyocell fabrics. One was what the fabrics were treated with resins and washed with cellulase, and then dyed with reactive dyes. The other procedure was the fabrics were dyed with reactive dyes, and then applied the resin treatments and cellulase washing. After fibrillation and washing the undyed Iyocell fabric and the Iyocell fabric that was dyed with C.I.Reactive Red 120, their weight loss ratios were 3.5% and 2.8%, respectively. Dyeing with reactive dyes caused the crosslinking between cellulose and dyes and the crosslinking decreased fibrillation. The weight loss by enzyme washing of Iyocell fabrics decreased by the glyoxal and melamine resin treatments. The reduction of weight loss can be caused by fibrillation decrease. Dyeing and resin treating can be showed the synergic effect on the reduction of fibrillation. The effect of glyoxal resin on the reduction of fibrillation was a little better than that of melamine resin.

한국산 소나무의 지역(고성, 홍천 및 봉화군)에 따른 역학적 특성 (Mechanical Characteristics of Korean Red Pines according to Provinces (Goseong, Hongcheon and Bonghwa-gun))

  • 본 연구는 태백산맥을 기준으로 영동(고성군), 영서(홍천군), 영남(봉화군) 세 지역 간 소나무의 재질 차이 유무를 알기 위해 역학적 특성을 조사하였다. 측정한 역학적 성질은 압축강도, 경도 및 전단강도였다. 압축강도는 미성숙재에서 지역 간 차이가 없으며, 심재부와 변재부에서는 봉화, 홍천, 고성군 순으로 크게 나타났다. 경도는 횡단면에서는 봉화군이, 방사 및 접선 단면에서는 고성군이 크게 나타났다. 전단강도는 심재부에서는 차이가 없었으며, 변재부에서는 봉화군이 고성, 홍천군에 비해 높게 나타났다. 이는 지역 간 가도관장, 마이크로피브릴경각 차이에 의한 것으로 생각된다. 지역 간 재질특성의 차이 규명으로 국내산 소나무재를 효율적이고 선택적으로 사용하여 부가가치를 높이고, 또한 우수한 수형목을 선발하는데 활용될 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
