A reliability analysis of the fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule for the fatigue design truck proposed for the LRFD code and for the current DB 24 truck. The limit state function for fatigue failure is expressed as a function of various random variables that affect fatigue damage. Among these variables, the statistical parameters for the equivalent moment, the impact factor, and the loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, and the parameters for the fatigue strength, the girder distribution factor, and the headway factor were obtained from the measured data reported in literature. Based on the reliability analysis, the fatigue truck model for the LRFD code was proposed. After applying the proposed fatigue truck to the LRFD code, 16 composite plate and box girder bridges were designed based on the LRFD method, and the LRFD design results for the fatigue limit state were compared with those by the current KHBDC.
A structural reliability analysis of fatigue truck model for fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule expressed as a function of various random variables affecting fatigue damage. Among the variables, the statistical parameters for equivalent moment, impact factor, and loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, whereas the parameters on fatigue strength, girder distribution factor, and headway factor of the measured data available in the literature were used. The effects of various fatigue truck models, fatigue life, ADTT, fatigue detail category, loadometer, and gross vehicle weight of fatigue truck on the reliability index of fatigue damage were analyzed. It is expected that the analytical results presented herein can be used as a basic background material in the calibration of both fatigue design truck and fatigue load factor of LRFD specification.

A method for assessing fatigue vulnerability of steel bridge members considering corrosion and truck traffic variation with time is proposed to evaluate the reduction of fatigue strength in steel bridge members. A fatigue limit state function including corrosion and traffic variation effect is established. The interaction between the average corrosion depth and the fatigue strength reduction factor is applied to the limit state function as the reduction term of strength. Three types of truck traffic change is modeled for representing real traffic change trend. Monte-Carlo simulation method is used for reliability analysis which provides the data to obtain fatigue vulnerability curves. The estimation method proposed was verified by comparing with the results of reference study and applying to the steel bridges in service.
This study developed an analysis model of estimating fatigue damage using the linear elastic fracture mechanics method. Stress history occurring to an element when a truck passed over a bridge was defined as block loading and crack closure theory explaining load interaction effect was applied. Stress range frequency analysis considering dead load stress and crack opening was done. Probability of stress range frequency distribution was applied and the probability distribution parameters were estimated. The Monte Carlo simulation of generating the probability various of distribution was performed. The probability distribution of failure block numbers was obtained. With this the fatigue reliability of an element not occurring in failure could be calculated. The failure block number divided by average daily truck traffic remains the life of a day. Fatigue reliability analysis model was carried out for the welding member of cross beam flange and vertical stiffener of steel box bridge using the proposed model. Consequently, a 3.8% difference was observed between the remaining life in the peak analysis method and in the proposed analysis model. The proposed analysis model considered crack closure phase and crack retard.

In this study, to evaluate fatigue characteristics of developed composite bridge deck, compression fatigue test at girder support and flexural fatigue test for the 2.8m-long flexural test model were carried out. For the test specimen, DB 24 truck load was applied up to 2,000,000 cycles. In the compression fatigue test, behavior at deck tube and its bonded connection were evaluated. In the flexural fatigue test, deck behavior at mid-span and girder connection were evaluated.
Recently, due to the increasing overloaded heavy vehicles and traffic volumes fatigue failures of steel highway bridges frequently occur. Therefore, it is important to decide rational fatigue design procedure which can reflect lifetime cumulative fatigue damage reasonably. In this study, cumulative fatigue damages are simulated for various bridge systems and traffic conditions. The AASHTO LRFD fatigue design procedure is reviewed and the current fatigue design loading format, in which a single representative truck is loaded regardless of bridge width, is found to yield inconsistent safety level. Improved loading format with rational design load level for fatigue design is suggested.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate a performance-based load zoning procedure in flexible pavements. Long-term performance in flexible pavements will be evaluated using VESYS type rutting model and Miner s theory on fatigue cracking. Permanent deformation properties such as alpha and gnu, and fatigue cracking properties such as k1 and k2 in asphalt concrete were used respectively. The data from the literatures were also used in predicting performance in flexible pavements for evaluating load restrictions as well as parametric study. Finally, a performance-based load zoning procedure and a simple load limit procedure for load zoning were assessed.

The deck of steel box girder bridges is composed of deck plate, longitudinal rib, and transverse ribs. The orthotropic steel decks have high possibility to fatigue damage due to numbers of welded connection part, the heavy contact loadings, and the increase of repeated loadings. Generally, the local stress by the repeated loadings of heavy vehicles causes the orthotropic steel deck bridge to fatigue cracks. The increase of traffic volume and heavy vehicle loadings are promoted the possibility of fatigue cracks. Thus, it is important to exactly evaluate the structural behavior of bridge considering the contact loading area of heavy vehicles and real load patterns of heavy trucks which have effects on the bridge. This study estimated the effect of contact area of design loads and real traffic vehicles through the finite element analysis considering the real loading conditions. The finite element analysis carried out 4 cases of loading patterns in the orthotropic steel deck bridge. Also, analysis estimated the influence of contact area of real truck loadings by the existence of diaphragm plate. The result of finite element analysis indicated that single tire loadings of real trucks occurred higher local stress than one of design loadings, and especially the deck plate got the most influence by the single tire loading. It was found that the diaphragm attachment at joint part of longitudinal ribs and transverse ribs had no effects on the improvement of structural performance against fatigue resistance in elastic analysis.
