  • In this study, the computationally efficient inelastic buckling analysis program is developed to be used as the research tool in finding buckling strength of inelastic members. The program can determine buckling loads and buckled shapes of elastic and inelastic members which failed by flexural, lateral-torsional and/or local buckling. It can analyze singly and doubly symmetric I-shape members. In the program, the web of the member is modeled using the plate element and the flanges are modeled by beam elements. Multilinear isotropic hardening rule and the incremental theory of plasticity are used to simulate the inelastic stress-strain relationship from material tests. The program is verified using theoretical solutions and experimental results. The results from the program show good agreement with those from experiments and theory.

  • The flexural behavior of HSB I-girder with a non-slender web attributed to inelastic lateral-torsional buckling under uniform bending was investigated using nonlinear finite element analysis of ABAQUS. The girder was assumed to have a compact or noncompact web in order to prevent premature bend-buckling of the web. The unbraced length of the girder was selected so that inelastic lateral-torsional buckling governs the ultimate flexural strength. The compression flange was also assumed to be either compact or noncompact to prevent local buckling of the elastic flange. Both homogeneous sections fabricated from HSB600 or HSB800 steel and hybrid sections with HSB800 flanges and SM570-TMC web were considered. In the FE analysis, the flanges and web of I-girder were modeled as thin shell elements. Initial imperfections and residual stresses were imposed on the FE model. An elasto-plastic strain hardening material was assumed for steel. After establishing the validity of the present FE analysis by comparing FE results with test results in existing literature, the effects of initial imperfection and residual stress on the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior were analyzed. Finite element analysis results for 96 sections demonstrated that the current inelastic strength equations for the compression flange in AASHTO LTFD can be applied to predict the inelastic lateral torsional buckling strength of homogeneous and hybrid HSB I-girders with a non-slender web.

  • In the companion paper (Model Development), an analytical model estimating the available rotation capacity of fully restrained beam-column connections in special steel moment-resisting frames was proposed. In this paper, two limit states were considered as the connection rotation capacity criteria: (i) strength degradation failure when the strength falls below the nominal plastic strength due to the local buckling of the beam's cross-section and (ii) low-cycle fatigue fracture caused by plastic strain accumulation at the buckled flange after only a few cycles of high-amplitude deformation. A series of analyses are conducted using the proposed model with two limit states under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Beam section geometric parameters, such as flange and web slenderness ratios, varied over the practical ranges of H-shapedbeams to observe their effect on the rotation capacity and low-cycle fatigue life of pre-qualified WUF-W connections.

  • The longitudinal stiffener performs its role to increase the local buckling strength by making simple support upon compression flange. In the recent researches, it is investigated that compression flange with point supports on certain arrangement reveals the same strength with longitudinal stiffeners. From this results, it is predictable that shear stud could perform the role of longitudinal stiffener if shear stud embedded in concrete satisfies the requirement to point-support under yield stress of the compression flange. In this study, the researches were performed to investigate the optimally required arrangement space of longitudinal point-support for which the shear stud replacing the longitudinal stiffeners and simultaneously determine the required numbers and space of shear stud for completely composite behavior between compression bottom flange and bottom concrete on the double composite girder system.

  • The lifting and lowering supports method makes up for the weak points in the classical method and provides makes construction economical effect to construction. The application of pre-compression to continuous steel box girder bridges makes it possible to reduce the amount of steel, the height of girders and consequently, the cost consequentlyof the bridges' construction by through the process of concrete filling- up and the lifting-lowering of the inner supports. The lifting and lowering supports method is apt to cause local buckling in the lower flange and web plates by due to the process of the lifting of the inner supports. Therefore iln this study, therefore, the possibility of local buckling could be decreased, in consideration of the lifting force and the buckling strength of stiffened plates, by increasing the number of longitudinal stiffeners and the installation of extended longitudinal stiffeners on the lower flange and the web plates in the range of positive moment.

  • Horizontally curved I-girders are subjected to not only bending moments but also torsional moments. The torsional moment of the plate girder is addition of St. Venant torsion and non-uniform torsion. In the flange of I-shaped plate girder, a kind of open-section, the normal stresses is not distributed uniformly due to the non-uniform torsion. Because of that, one of compression flange tip can be yielded faster than the flange of general straight girder. In other words, the flange local buckling strength is decreased when the girder has initial curvature. In this paper, the numerical analysis is conducted to investigate the average stresses in flange for curved girders. The subtended angle and slenderness ratio are taken as parameters.

  • Depending on the plastic deformation capacity required, structural steel design under the current codes can be classified into three categories: elastic, plastic, and seismic design. Most of the current steel codes explicitly forbid the use of a steel material with a yield strength higher than 450 MPa in the plastic design because of the concerns about its low plastic deformation capacity as well as the lack of test data on local and lateral torsional buckling behavior. In this study, flexural tests on full-scale H-shape members built with SM490A (ordinary steel or benchmark material) and HSB800 (high-strength steel) were carried out. The primary objective was to investigate the appropriateness of extrapolating the local buckling criterion of the current codes, which was originally developed for normal-strength steel, to the case of high-strength steel. All the SM490A specimens performed consistently with the current code criteria and exhibited sufficient strength and ductility. The performance of the HSB800 specimens was also very satisfactory from the strength perspective; even the specimens with a noncompact and slender flange developed the plastic moment capacity. The HSB800 specimens, however, showed an inferior plastic rotation capacity due to the premature tensile fracture of the beam bottom flange beneath the vertical stiffener at the loading point. The plastic rotation capacity that was achieved was less than 3 (or the minimum level required for a plastic design). Although the test results in this study indicate that the extrapolation of the current flange local-buckling criterion to the case of high-strength steel is conservative from the elastic design perspective, further testing together with an associated analytical study is required to identify the causes of the tensile fracture and to establish a flange slenderness criterion that is more appropriate for high-strength steel.

  • This paper presents the results of an analytical investigation pertaining to the compression behavior of axially loaded plates made from pultruded fiber reinforced plastic materials. Non-dimensionalized closed-form solutions have been developed for the prediction of the buckling load in the pultruded plates with edge stiffener. These solutions were based upon the classical theory of orthotropic plates and accounted for the e1astic restraints at the juncture of plate and stiffener. The effects of edge stiffener on the flange plate were investigated in order to clarify its usefulness for increasing flange local buckling load of the pultruded structural shapes.

  • I-type girders are widely applied as very economical sections in plate girder bridges. There has been research on developing composite laminated panels, curved plates reinforced with closed-end ribs, and new forms of ribs and compression flanges for steel box girders. However, there is a limitation in analyzing the exact cause of local buckling caused by an I-type girder's webs. Therefore, an I-type girder's web was modeled using the finite element analysis program LUSAS 17.0 before and after reinforcement. We checked for the minimum thickness criteria presented in the Korea highway bridge design code, and the cause of buckling after performing a linear elastic buckling analysis of dead and live loads was analyzed. Before reinforcement, an eigenvalue (λ1) at the 1st mode was 0.7025, the critical buckling load was smaller than the applied load, and there is a buckling. After reinforcement, when applying vertical and horizontal stiffeners to the web part of the girder at support, a Nodal line was formed, the eigenvalue was 1.5272, and buckling stability was secured. To improve buckling trace of the girder at the support, an additional plate was applied to the web at the support to ensure visual and structural safety, but buckling occurs at center of web. The eigenvalue (λ1) was 3.5299, and this method is efficient for reinforcing the web of the support.

  • The behavior of the connection for beam-to-column weak axis connection and its details should be identified. Thus, each element is considered a panel zone, and the horizontal stiffener's presence or absence and position in bracket-type welding connection are used as variables to compare the behavior of strong axis connection and weak axis connection. In this study, the strength of connection is calculated by substituting the simple beam-strengthened vertical stiffeners for connection in the presence of horizontal stiffeners. In the absence of horizontal stiffeners, the strength of connection can be calculated using local flange bending strength considering local web yielding strength, web crippling, and web buckling strength. The results of the theoretical analysis and experiments are compared.
