  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of pulsing treatment and to develop techniques treated right after harvest by grower for extending vase life and improving flower quality in cut freesia. Thirty minutes dipping treatment of STS 2 mM followed by 20 hr pulsing in sucrose 10% + BA 10 ppm + 8-HQS 300 ppm solution showed the best results in vase life and flower quality of cut freesia when kept in vase water. This pretreatment extended vase life by 24.7% than control, and improved quality of cut freesia significantly in flower diameter, percent flowering (35.4%), fresh weight, water uptake, and carotenoid content, and depressed ethylene production and respiration rate.

  • Basal rot of freesia caused by a Sclerotium sp. occurred at Incheon areas. Incidence of the disease reached up to 45% and averaged 17.0% in the fields. Typical symptoms consisted of sheath dry and leaf blight due to rots on basal leaves. The causal fungus was identified as Sclerotium sp. based on following mycological characteristics. The fungus formed sclerotia on cultural media and plant tissues, but did not produce asexual spores. On cultural medium, aerial mycelia of the fungus changed color from white to clay with cultural age and smelled musty odor. Numerous irregular and elliptical black microsclerotia of the fungus were formed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) after 5 days of incubation at $25^{\circ}C$ and sized $115{\sim}200{\times}95{\sim}150 (av. 145{\sim}126.5){\mu}m$. The fungus grew at $10{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ and $pH 4.0{\sim}8.5$. However, the optimal temperature and pH for mycelial growth of the fungus were $24^{\circ}C$ and 5.5 respectively. The isolate showed present pathogenicity to not only freesia but gladiolus in the pathogenicity test, and the symptoms were similar to those observed in the fields. Basal rot of freesia caused by Sclerotium sp. is firstly reported in Korea.

  • Freesia (Freesia hybrida Hort.) 'Sweet Lemon' was developed for the cut flowers in National Institute of Horticultural Herbal Science, Rural Development Administration, Korea in 2015. This hybrid was crossed and selected from 'Teresa' and 'Yvonne' in 2007. Morphological characteristics of the selected freesia hybrid were investigated for 5 years from 2009 to 2014, and then it was named 'Sweet Lemon' in 2015. 'Sweet Lemon' has double and lemon petals (RHS color chart Y2B). The average flower diameter was 6.8 cm and the average yield is 6.7. The growth of the plant is vigorous and the average plant height is 99.0cm, which is 34.7cm higher than the standard cultivar 'Yvonne'. The average floret number per stalk of 'Sweet Lemon' was 10.7, and stalk length was 7.7 cm. The average days to first flowering of 'Sweet Lemon', 126 days, was approximately 20 days earlier than the control cultivar. It's average vase life and yield is 8.7 days and 5.6 cormlets per plant, respectively. Totally 58 of volatile compounds were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the major components were linalool, alpha-terpineol, alpha-selinene, and limonene.

  • The aim of this study was to determine the effect of day-length extension treatment using LED lighting (blue, green, red, or 3 mixed) on vegetative growth and flowering of freesia 'Yvonne', in comparison to that using glow lamps and metal halide lamps. Lighting treatments were imposed from 5 PM to 8 PM for 150 days from after flower bud differentiation to flowering end. For the period from leaf emergence to floral bud formation, no light source affected plant height but the number of leaves was decreased by the metal halide lamp. The highest SPAD value in the flower bud developing period occurred in the metal halide lamp treatment. The time of flowering was advanced by blue or green LED treatment compared to the no lighting control. The green LED lighting advanced flowering by 6 and 8 days compared to no lighting and metal halide lamp treatment, respectively. The blooming period tended to be shortened by the red LED treatment. As for the flower characteristics of 'Yvonne', floret length and width, and the weight of cut flowers were highest in the metal halide lamp treatment. Red LED decreased corm width and weight of 'Yvonne' while glow lamp decreased height and weight. Starch contents in corm were not influenced by the lighting source. Our results indicate that the green LED lighting advanced the time of flowering and the metal halide lamp was good for cut-flower quality.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of various growth substrates on the growth and flowering of hydroponically grown Freesia hybrid 'Gold Rich'. Perlite, peat moss and a perlite: peat moss mixture (1 : 1 ratio, v / v) were used as the growing media. The greatest plant height before flower bud differentiation was attained using mixed medium compared to the others. The type of medium used did not influence leaf number, mineral content or SPAD value in leaves. Flowering began at 137 days after planting in mixed medium, which was 13 days earlier than in perlite medium. The whole plant fresh weight was 21.3 g heavier in mixed medium than in perlite medium (40.9 g). A similar result was obtained for shoot length, with the highest value (96.6 cm) obtained in mixed medium, i.e., 20 cm higher than in perlite medium (76.6 cm). Floret number per plant was also the highest in mixed medium (14.4), i.e., 1.7 - times higher than in perlite medium. Therefore, among the substrates tested in this experiment, we recommend using mixed perlite: peat moss medium (1 : 1 ratio, v / v) for hydroponic culture of freesia, as the use of this medium improved the physical properties of the plants, producing the best results in terms of plant growth and cut-flower quality.

  • This study was conducted to find out the cause of discoloration after pressing yellow-colored flowers. Plant materials used were Lilium Asiatic Hybrids, Oncidium spp., Rosa hybrida, $Tulipa{\times}gesneriana$, Antirrhinum majus, Dianthus caryophyllus, Freesia hybrida, Zantedeschia elliottiana, Gerbera jamesonii, Helianthus annuus, and Ranunculus asiaticus. Thickness, ratio of length to width, and water content of petals did not considerably affect discoloration of pressed flowers. Expression of yellow color in petals was caused by carotenoids in Lilium Asiatic Hybrids, Oncidium spp., Rosa hybrida and $Tulipa{\times}gesneriana$, by flavonoids in Antirrhinum majus, Dianthus caryophyllus, Freesia hybrida and Zantedeschia elliottiana, and by coexistence of carotenoids and flavonoids in Gerbera jamesonii, Helianthus annuus and Ranunculus asiaticus. Carotenoids that expressed yellow color in petals affected significantly on discoloration in pressed flowers containing carotenoids alone or both carotenoids and flavonoids. However, discoloration was hardly ever found in yellow-colored species as affected by flavonoids. Dark treatment was effective for almost perfect preservation in color of pressed flowers, while light treatment resulted in severe discoloration.
