  • In this paper, we suggest new music composition algorithm based on fractal theory. User can define and control fractal shape by setting an initial state and production rules in L-System. We generate an asymmetric fractal tree based on L-System and probability. Then a music is generated by the fractal tree image using sonification techniques. We introduce two composition algorithm using the fractal tree. First, monophonic music can be generated by mapping x and y axis to velocity and pitch, respectively Second, harmonic music also can be generated by mapping x and y axis to time and pitch, respectively Using our composition algorithm, user can easily generate a music which has repeated pattern created by recursive feature of fractal, and a music which has structure similar to fractal tree image.

  • The box-counting(BC) method is one of the most commonly used methods for fractal dimension calculation of binary images in the fields of Engineering, Science, Medical Science, Geology, etc due to its simplicity and reliability. It deals with only square images with each size equal to the power of 2 to prevent it from discarding unused pixels for images of arbitrary size. In this paper, we presents a more efficient BC method based on the original one, which is applicable to images of arbitrary size. The proposed approach allows the number of the counting boxes to be real to improve the estimation accuracy. The mean absolute error performance is computed on two deterministic fractal images whose theoretical dimensions are well known to compare with those of the existing BC method and triangular BC method. The experimental results show that the proposed method can outperform the two methods and assess the complexity of coastline images of Korea and Chodo island taken from the Google map.

  • High-resolution images of surfaces provide detailed information on pores or shapes with specific sizes ranging from nano sizes to micrometers. However, it is not yet clear to determine an efficient association for pores or shapes from high-resolution images of surfaces. For the efficient association of pores and shapes, the surface characteristics of the device were considered as fractal dimensions by taking SEM photographs and binarizing the images. The fractal program was directly coded for surface analysis of the device. The device surface characteristics and electrical characteristics are thought to be related to the fractal dimension. The fractal dimension decreased with an increase in internal pores. The density and grain boundary of particles, which are structural characteristics of the device surface, were related to the fractal dimension. The particle size decreased with an increase in the fractal dimension and was uniformly formed. When the particles were uniformly formed, fewer pores were present and the fractal dimension increased.

  • Fractal theory has been widely used to quantify the complexity of remotely sensed digital elevation models and images. Despite successful applications of fractals to a variety of fields including computer graphics, engineering and geosciences, the performance of fractal estimators depends highly on data sampling. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for computing the fractal dimension based on the triangular prism method and a new sampling method. The proposed sampling method combines existing two methods, that is, the geometric step method and the divisor step method to increase pixel utilization. In addition, while the existing estimation methods are based on $N{\times}M$ window, the proposed method expands to $N{\times}M$ window. The proposed method is applied to generated fractal DEM, Brodatz's image DB and real images taken in the campus to demonstrate its feasibility.

  • As a Creative Director one is always looking forward to formative elements of new design. The fractal image that is generated by a computer program instead of by hand suggests a geometric pattern that can grafted into a new design for each field. In this paper we look for information about the creation of a Mandelbrot fractal image that is being utilized in the design of various sectors like textile design, architectural design, exhibition design from pure painting by convergence of both technology and art composites. And it analyses about forms based on the formative principle of creation images.

  • In this paper, we presents an algorithm which generates its high-resolution DTM using a low-resolution DTM of the sea floor terrain and fractal theory. The fractal dimension of each patch region divided from the DTM is extracted and then with this information and original data, each cell region in the patch is interpolated using the midpoint displacement method and a median filter is incorporated to generate natural and smooth sea floor surface. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is tested on a fractal terrain map.

  • The current study examined brain regions associated with aesthetic experience to fractal images using functional MRI. The aesthetic estimations of the images showed that there is a general consensus regarding the perception of beautiful images. Out of 270 fractal images, fifty images rated highest(beautiful images) and fifty images rated lowest(non-beautiful images) were selected and presented to the participants. The two conditions were presented using the block design. Frontal lobes, cingulate gyri, and insula, the areas related to the cognitive and emotional processing in aesthetic experience, were activated when beautiful images were presented. In contrast, the middle occipital gyri and precuneus, the areas associated with experience of negative emotions, were activated when non-beautiful images were presented. The conjunction analysis showed activations in temporal areas in response to beautiful images and activations in parietal areas in response to non-beautiful images. These results indicate that beautiful images elicit semantic interpretations whereas non-beautiful images facilitate abstract processes.
