Wind Erodibility of the Saemangeum Tideland Reclamation Project Area (새만금 간척지에서의 풍식예측에 관하여)

  • Evaluation of wind erodibility for the Saemangeum Reclamation Project area based on the wind erosion equation, WEQ, was attempted. Climatic factor was calculated with the climatic data for the Kunsan area, and soil erodibility factor was evaluated with the 108 soil samples collected from the project area. The soil erodibility evaluated from the non erodible aggregate percentage greater than 0.84 mm for the soil samples collected was $204.1Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ ranged from 50.08 to $642.37ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$. The annual climate factor based on the meteorological data in Kunsan was 3.67. The average amount of wind erosion with climate factor C from the climatic data from Kunsan and soil erodibility factor l from the soil in the project area was 7.49 Mg $ha^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ ranged from 1.84 Mg $ha^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ for silty clay loam soil to 23.57 Mg $ha^{-1}$ $yr^{-1}$ for sandy soil. The intensive wind erosion control should be needed for friable sand and loamy sand soils in the area.

Aggregate Distribution and Wind Erosion in Grass Land of the New Incheon International Airport (인천 신공항 잔디밭 조성지 토양의 입단분포 및 풍식 예측량 산정)

  • Soil aggregate distribution and its relation to wind erosion were examined for the surface soil of the experimental plots for grasses in the New Incheon International Airport, of which soil was reclaimed with sea sands in the Youngjong Island. The soil aggregate with the size between 0.10 and 0.84mm was 74 percents. The 6 percents of the soil aggregates were non-erodible. With this aggregate distribution the wind erodiblity of the soil, I. was $380Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ with I value and climatic factor calculated for the dry period from November to May, $45.2Mg\;ha^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ of the surface soil were estimated to be eroded. The erodible particles with 0.37mm diameter could fly to 17.8, 29.9 and 49.8 meters by saltation at wind speed of 7, 9 and $15m\;s^{-1}$, respectively. The wind erosion could be reduced by increasing vegetation coverage and applying hydrophyllic soil conditioner.

  • Effects of porous fences on the wind erosion of sand particles from a triangular pile were investigated experimentally. The porous fence and sand pile were installed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at the sand pile location were well fitted to the atmospheric boundary layer over the open terrain. Particle motion was visualized to see the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. In addition, the threshold velocity were measured using a light sensitive video camera with varying the fence porosity ${\varepsilon}$. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity ${\varepsilon}=30%$ was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles.

  • Effects of porous wind fences on the wind erosion of particles from a triangular sand pile were investigated experimentally.   • An experimental study on the automation of the coffee roasting process was conducted. For this study, a temperature sensor, controllers, and motors were added to a manually operated coffee roaster. The temperature, time, and exhausting damper control were selected as the control parameters. The thermocouple measurements were severely influenced by the thermocouple size and location of the roaster. As a result, the standard thermocouple size and location of the roaster were experimentally set to show a similar trend of temperature change by using a previously installed thermometer. A standard roasting process was chosen through repeated roasting experiments and the advice of a roasting expert. The automation of the roasting process was successfully executed using temperature criteria, such as the bean input and first and second crack occurrence, and by controlling the exhausting damper opening time. The control parameters and roaster skills can be used for similar types of roasters for process automation.

Experimental Investigation on Particle Size of Soils Erodible by Wind using Portable Wind Erosion Tunnel (소형 풍동을 이용한 토양의 풍식 가능 입경 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate maximum and minimum grain size which eroded by wind according to soil and wind conditions, such as top soil water content, roughness, land slope, wind velocity and proportion of grain size under 0.84mm. For performing this study, portable wind erosion tunnel was designed and utilized during field test, which facilitated measuring actual wind erosions under artificially controlled wind conditions. In the result, maximum, minimum grain size had strong negative correlation with roughness while weak positive correlation with wind velocity. Also, Slope which means the effect of gravity also influence grain size erodible by winds. Based on these results, regression equations were suggested for predicting maximum and minimum grain sizes by using multiple linear regression analysis from SPSS 20.0. The equation for maximum grain size erodible by winds showed a good agreement with the observed data with $R^2$=0.896. Other equation for minimum grain size had $R^2$=0.777.

  • The following informations are known from physical and chemical characteristics of orchard soils and nutritional diagnosis of orange leaves in Jeju. 1. Most orange orchards are located on terrace and cindercone thus soil moisture and microclimate of an orchard will greatly be affected by its topography. 2. Excessive well drainage, shallow soil depth, high content of gravels, low solid phase ratio and strong wind will give severe problem of soil moisture and wind errosion, thus the exte- nsion of soil depth is necessary for maintain nutrients, water and sufficient root volume. 3. Available soil water was significantly and positively correlated with organic matter content and clay content also contributes to available soil water. Vinyl mulching was greatly helpful for soil water conservation, wind errosion prevention, soil temperature increases during winter. 4. Abundant amphoteric amorphous allophane take a key role to fix phosphorus and also rations and thus it is the major factor to determine fertilizer efficiency. Lime and phosphorus must be applied in deeper soil layer. Release of filed phosphorus must be reevluated for availability. 5. Organic matter such as see weeds will greatly increase fertilizer efficiency and low fertilizer efficiency during spring may be related to available soil water. 6. Nitrogen was in superoptimum and Mg was enough but P and Ca were somewhat deficient according to leaf analysies while K was deficient according to fruit analysis. Phosphorus application increased sugar/acid ratio and potassium decreases rind percentage. 7. Manganese deficiency and toxicity appeared in a few places. Iron and boron were enough. Most places showed tendency of copper excess but some places showed copper deficiency. 8. Soiling after elimination of rock base, application of slow release fertilizer and abundant organic matter, vinyl mulching and drip irrigation will increase fertilizer efficiency greatly and fruit yield drastically.

The Concentrations and Loads of Pollutant in Wet Deposition in Cheongju (습성강하물 중의 오염물질의 농도와 부하 - 충북 청주시를 중심으로-)

  • The concentrations and loads of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wet deposition were investigated at Chungbuk National University in Cheongju, Chungbuk. Event based precipitation samples were collected during 1998 to 2003. The precipitation-weighted mean concentrations of pollutants were 0.60 mg/L for TN, 0.014 mg/L for TP, and 4.8 mg/L for COD, which were smaller than its arithmetic mean concentrations by 26% for TN, 18% for TP, and 14% for COD. The concentrations of TN, TP, and COD significantly decreased with precipitation. Mean concentrations of pollutants in spring (March-May) were higher than in other seasons likely due to dust caused by wind erosion and sand-dust storms, pollen etc. Significant relationships were determined between TN and TP, and TN and COD. Annual loads of wet deposition averaged 7.9 kg/ha$\cdot$yr for TN, 0.19 kg/ha$\cdot$yr for TP, and 63.9 kg/ha$\cdot$yr for COD, which are almost identical to the values of TN and TP but slightly higher than COD value reported in Japan.

Soil Quality Assessment for Environmentally Sound Agriculture in the Mountainous Soils; Analysis of Sediment Data and Suggestion of Best Management Practices (산지에서의 환경보전형 농업을 위한 토양의 질 평가;유사자료의 분석과 최적영농방법의 제안)

  • Eleven runoff $plots(3{\times}15\;m)$ were built on a sloping field of a high plateau in Kangwon Province, Korea. The plots were treated with different tillage, residue covers and fertilizers, corn and potato were cultivated, and sediment discharge was measured from the plots for 3 years. Agricultural management practices were monitored around the plots to develop adequate best management practices. The least sediment occurred from the plots with no-till and 100% residue cover $(corn,\;0.1{\sim}2.2\;t/ha/year)$ and with contour tillage and vinyl sheet cover plots $(potato,\;0.1{\sim}0.2\;t/ha/year)$. The largest sediment was measured from the plots with up-and-down till and no cover ($11{\sim}33$ and $16{\sim}31\;t/ha/year$ from corn and potato plots, respectively). The type of organic and commercial fertilizers seemed not to affect sediment discharge. Sediment discharge from contour plots were largely dependent on the collapse of ridges due to the flush of water stored in furrows. The sediment discharge from contour corn and potato plots with no residue cover was $10{\sim}27$ and $16{\sim}24\;t/ha/year$, respectively. No-till with residue cover, vinyl cover for tuber crops, construction of furrow dam, frost heave research, furrow and ridge tillage with furrow dam after tuber crop harvest, limited stalk harvest of row crops, use of winter cover crops, and other common best management practices were recommended to minimize the sediment discharge from a high plateau sloping land culture.

Functional Activities of Cacao Nibs and Couvertures according to Process Conditions (카카오닙과 커버춰의 가공 조건에 따른 기능성 분석)

  • This study was conducted to provide information regarding changes in antioxidant activity in response to conching temperatures, conching times, and cacao mass content (CMC) in dark chocolate. The radical scavenging activities and functional components of cacao nibs were highest for raw cacao nib (R0) under all conditions. Moreover, antioxidant activities and functional compounds increased during roasting for 25 min. As the conching temperature increased, the radical scavenging activities and functional components increased. Quantitative analysis of major catechin-derived compounds by HPLC revealed that R0 had the highest value for other roasted cacao nibs in all aspects (P<0.05). The content of procyanidin B2, catechin, and epicatechin increased during roasting for 25 min. Finally, evaluation of couvertures revealed that procyanidin B1 content increased as conching time increased to 48 h, except for 70% CMC and conched at $60^{\circ}C$ (HH) and 70% CMC and conched at $50^{\circ}C$. Overall, HH48 contained the richest catechin-derived components.
