The variation of acidity, conductivity, and ion components in precipitation depending on the dominant wind direction was investigated from January, 2009 to December 2009 in Busan, Korea. Both southwesterly and northeasterly winds were dominant in Busan area. The volume-weighted mean acidity showed pH 7, and the high conductivity indicated 200 ${\mu}scm^{-1}$ in westerly wind. The volume-weighted mean equivalent concentration showed higher value of $K^+$ and $Cl^-$ in all wind directions. The composition ratio of $NO{_3}^-/SO{_4}^{2-}$ showed over 3 in northerly wind. The neutralization factors have been found to have higher value for potassium ion in northeasterly, easterly, southwesterly, and westerly winds compared with different wind directions, which indicated significant neutralization of acidic components over the region by potassium. Also, the concentration of sea salt has been found over 800 ${\mu}sm^{-3}$ in northeasterly and southwesterly winds. Air masses passing through Manchuria, Inner Mongolia plateau, China, and Russia in spring, autumn, and winter covered Busan, Korea in northerly, westerly, and northwesterly winds. However, air masses passing through the ocean in summer covered Busan, Korea in easterly, northeasterly, and southwesterly winds. Therefore, the variation of acidity, conductivity, and ionic components contained in precipitation shows each seasonal characteristics with prevailing wind systems between the continental and coastal area in Busan, Korea.
Forbush Decreases (FDs) are representative events of abrupt decrease in galactic cosmic ray intensity. They are known to be strongly associated with solar wind events such as interplanetary shock (IP shock) and magnetic cloud (MC). In order to examine effectiveness of the MC on FDs, I studied the 44 MCs that occurred during the 2 years from 1998 to 1999 and investigated the properties of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and solar wind. As a result, I found that 11 out of 44 MCs are associated with the FDs. In particularly, it is noted that the FDs are driven by the IP shock sheaths which are associated with over 13 nT of IMF magnitude, 3 nT of IMF turbulence, and 550km/s of solar wind speed. This result indicates that magnetic cloud and its interplanetary shock sheath work as a modulator of the cosmic ray intensity.
In order to clarify the characteristics of satellite based sea wind data assimilations applied for the estimation of wind resources around the Korean peninsula, several numerical experiments were carried out using WRF. Satellite sea wind data used in this study are QuikSCAT from NASA and ASCAT from ESA. When the wind resources are estimated with data assimilation, its estimation accuracy is improved clearly. Since the band width is broad for QuikSCAT, statistical accuracy of the estimated wind resources with QuikSCAT assimilations is better than that with ASCAT assimilations. But the wind estimated around sub-satellite point matches better with of ASCAT compared to QuikSCAT assimilation. The impact of sea wind data assimilation on the prediction of wind resources lasts for 6 hours after data assimilation starts, therefore the data assimilation processes using both fine spatial and temporal resolutions of sea wind are needed to make a more useful wind resource map of the Korean Peninsula.

This study compared the sea surface wind pattern between model results from KMA operational model (RDAPS) and observational results from QuikSCAT in the 2005-2006 year. The mean spatial distributions of sea surface wind show the prominent seasonal patterns of summer and winter season adjacent to Korean Peninsular. The statistical analysis also shows well seasonal variation of sea surface wind patterns between model and observation results. The BIAS value represents less than -0.5 m/s and -1 m/s in summer and winter seasons, respectively. The spatially averaged correlation coefficient shows larger than 0.7 and 0.8 in summer and winter seasons, respectively. The correlation coefficient of winter season shows higher value than that of summer season in the comparison between model and observation. This results show that the RDAPS model simulate well strong sea surface wind in winter season rather than weak sea surface wind in summer season.

The wind load and structural characteristics of a twin building are more complex than those of conventional high-rise buildings. The pressure load due to wind on a twin building was therefore measured via wind tunnel experiments to analyze such characteristics. The wind pressure pattern was then deduced from measured data using proper orthogonal decomposition. Channeling and vortex shedding were observed in the first and second modes, respectively. The along-wind loads on the two buildings featured a positive correlation and the cross-wind loads featured no correlation. Such a correlation affected the wind-induced displacement. The structural member connecting the two buildings had an insignificant effect on the positive correlation, but it notably reduced the wind-induced displacement with a negative correlation.

It has been known that high-speed solar wind streams associated with coronal holes lead to quasi-periodic substorms that occur approximately every $2{\sim}4$ hours. In this paper we examined 222 repetitive substorms that occurred during high-speed stream periods in July through December in 2003 to quantitatively determine a range of energy input from the solar wind into the magnetosphere between two consecutive substorms. For this study, we have used the Akasofu ${\varepsilon}$-parameter to time-integrate it for the interval between two consecutive substorms, and have applied this method to the 222 substorms. We find that the average amount of solar wind input energy between two adjacent substorms is $1.28{\times}10^{14}J$ and about 85% out of the 222 substorms occur after an energy input of $2{\times}10^{13}{\sim}2.3{\times}10^{14}J$. Based on these results, we suggest that it is not practical to predict when a sub storm will occur after a previous one occurs purely based on the solar wind-magnetosphere energy coupling. We provide discussion on several possible factors that may affect determining substorm onset times during high-speed streams.

In this study, analytical works for the induced winds due to traveling vehicles on highway have been conducted by Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The traveling condition was considered in two cases: (a) single direction and (b) bi-direction. The analysis was focused on the effects of the induced winds on the upper part of a median strip while the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicles were directly analyzed in the previous studies. From the analysis results, it has been found that the maximum magnitude of the induced winds was 2.2 m/s when the vehicles travel with the speed of 50 km/h. Additionally, 4.0 m/s and 5.3 m/s were obtained with the speed of 90 km/h and 120 km/h, respectively. Especially, the induced winds was generated about 84% of the vehicle speed at 1.0 m above from the median strip when the vehicles travel with the speed of 120 km/h. The induced winds was maintained during the very short period while the traveling. conclusively, it is noted that the wind power generation can be possible by using the small-sized wind power generators installed on median strips throughout the analytical results in this study.

As the demand of Variable Message Sign(VMS) has become pervasive in fulfilling the ITS policy, the costs of maintaining the Variable Message Sign operation have also increased. This paper proposes the U-curved figure, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type for aerodynamic drag reduction on Variable Message Sign and shows the analysis of aerodynamic drag effects using Flow Analysis. As a results of the flow analysis for right-angled, 45 degrees from side to side and 45 degrees from up or down, the C-curved figure and the ventilated figure type show about 30% aerodynamic drag reduction in all direction. And the U-curved figure type shows vivid aerodynamic drag reduction for right-angled and 45 degree from side to side, but trivial aerodynamic drag reduction for 45 degree from up or down. It is possible to reduce not only the damage on Variable Message Sign due to typhoon because of the aerodynamic drag reduction, but also installation constraints because of lighter Variable Message Sign support structure by appling the proposed structure and analysis in this paper.

Shallow water waves are hindcasted from sea wind fields, which include wave transformations such as shoaling, refraction, diffraction, reflection and wave breaking. In case of estimating sea wind field in shallow water, the sea wind revised from free wind obtained by the typhoon model is widely used. However, this method is not able to consider the effect of land topography on the wind field, which will be important factor for shallow water wave forecasting and hindcasting. In this study, therefore, the effect of land topography on sea wind field in shallow water is investigated for shallow water wave forecasting and hindcasting with high accuracy. The 3-D MASCON model is introduced to consider the influence of land topography on the wind field. And, for two areas divided by the topographical characteristics, i.e. shielded and opened coastal areas, sea wind field is examined by comparison between initial wind field by typhoon model and modified wind field by 3-D MASCON model. Finally, applying these sea wind fields to SWAN model, the results of shallow water wave calculated in shielded and opened coastal areas are compared, and, also, the effect of MASCON model on shallow water wave forecasting and hindcasting is discussed.
