  • Since the advent of turbojet aircraft with their greater weight and high landing speed breaking performance on runway surface has become un critical. Under certain weather conditions(wet weather, winter) hydroplaning or unacceptable loss of traction can occur, resulting in poor braking performance and possible loss of directional control. To address this concern a number of research project me conducted by NASA, FAA, USAF. The various method which was reported the advantage of the increasing the friction and decreasing the hydroplaning effect. A-2 section of inchon international airport was grooved using drying grooving method. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the dry grooving method the surface was spray with water and measured the fiction factor and the depth of the water using Mu meter and water depth measuring device. The field test results shooed that the fiction factor nos increased and the depth of the water decreased. The dry grooving method illustrated the reduction of hydroplaning and also, no distress on the runway.

  • In this paper, the friction drag force of 3D submerged body is investigated by considering the surface roughness, the first grid height, and the Reynolds number using open CFD source code, OpenFOAM 4.0. A procedure for estimating drag components by CFD code is set up and suggested in this study. In the 3D submerged body, because of the form factor in the 3D computations, the friction resistance with the small roughness of $12{\mu}m$ obtains different result with the smooth wall. As the Reynolds number increased, the boundary layer becomes thinner and the fiction resistance tends to decrease. In the computations for the effect of y+, the friction resistance and wall shear stress are excessively predicted when the y+ value deviates from the log layer. This is presumably because the boundary layer becomes thicker and the turbulence energy is excessively predicted in the nose due to the increase in y+ value. As the roughness increases, the boundary layer becomes thicker and the turbulence kinetic energy on the surface increases. From this study, the drag estimation method, considering the roughness by numerical analysis for ships or offshore structures, can be provided by using the suggested the y+ value and surface roughness with wall function.

  • It seems that blowing air bubble out of the bulb surface of a ship of flat bottom will reduce the frictional resistance, since wetted area of the hull surface is reduced owing to air bubble staying close to the surface. To as certain this concept, at first, the limiting streamlines around the bow was observed, and local distribution of pressure and shear stress, due to the change of air-blowing position, air supply pressure, and the model speed, was investigated. It was found that the local friction was reduced near the bulb and air-bubble formations also play an important role as a drag component. This paper can be considered as a preliminary study on the drag reduction of conventional ships by the micro-bubble injection.

  • Adquate friction resistance is needed to prevent pavement slipperiness and to allow vehicles to stop in a reasonable distance. Performance of the aggregates is reduced over time by wear and polishing as a consequence of vehicular traffic. In this research, the objective was to develop a laboratory method to test Indiana gravel aggregates to predict field performance, and determine causes for the range of values amang gravel aggregates. The assessment of gravel sources was primarily on the basis of individual rock types and those proportions comprising the gravel. Polish and friction values were determined in the laboratory with the British Wheel and Pendulum. The gravels of this study were composed primarily of carbonate aggregates that showed considerable variability in polishing thresholds. Igneous and metamorphic constituents polished to a lesser degree and are expected to improve overall aggregate performance. Estimates of the IFV (Initial Friction Value) and PV (Polished Value) for crushed gravel samples can be made based on the percentage of rock types present in the sample. A weighted average is used to make this calculation.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of the skin-friction reduction by vortex control. A vortical system such as a horseshoe vortex, a hairpin vortex, and a wake region was induced around a hemisphere attached on a Perspex flat plate in the circulating water channel. Hairpin vortices were developed from the wake region and horseshoe vortices were formed by an adverse pressure gradient in front of the hemisphere. The horseshoe vortices located on the flank of the hemisphere induced a high momentum flow in the wake region by the direction of their vorticity. This process increased the frequency of the hairpin vortices as well as the frictional drag on the surface of the wake region. To reduce the skin-friction drag, suction control in front of the hemisphere was applied through a hole. Flow visualization was performed to optimize the free-stream velocity, size of the hemisphere, and size of the suction hole. Once the wall suction control mitigated the strength of the horseshoe vortex, the energy supplied to the wake region was reduced, causing the frequency of the hairpin vortex generation to decrease by 36.4 %. In addition, the change in the skin-friction drag, which was measured with a dynamometer connected to a plate in the wake region, also decreased by 2.3 %.

  • A study on the optimization problems to find forebode shapes with minimum wavemaking and frictional resistance was performed. The afterbody was fixed as a given hull and only forebode offsets were treated as design variables. Design variables were divided into the offsets of given hull and small variation from them. For the wavemaking resistance calculation, Neumann-Kelvin theory was applied to the given hull and thin ship theory was applied to the small variation. ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line was used for the calculation of frictional resistance. Hull surface was represented mathmatically using shape function. As object function, such as wavemaking and frictional rersistance, was quadratic form of offsets and constraints linear, quadratic programing problem could be constructed. The complementary pivot method was used to find the soulution of the quadratic programing problem. Calculations were perfomed for the Series 60 $C_{B}$=0.6. at Fn=0.289. A realistic hull form could be obtained by using proper constraints. From the results of calculation for the Series 60 $C_{B}$=0.6, it was concluded that present method gave optimal shape of bulbous bow showing a slight improvement in the wave resistance performance at design speed Fn=0.289 compared with the results from the ship theory only.

  • The cost of fuel in ships has recently increased due to a rapid increase in international oil prices and international restrictions regarding the greenhouse effect generated from the burning of fuel. Therefore, different methods for changing the hull designs for improving energy efficiency, developing coating for reducing friction resistances, developing additives for improving engine thermal efficiency, and low-speed operation for reducing fuel consumption have been considered. The developments of high-speed, large-scale, and energy-saving vessels are deemed essential to adapt to the recent high oil price era. Therefore, it is important to analyze Precisely the qualitative and quantitative changes in the resistance value of the local areas of the hull surface. In this study, the engine performance before and after docking was analyzed to examine friction resistance caused by marine growth on the hull as a basic study for improving the energy efficiency. The result was then presented by comparing it with the previous data for 2.5 years between docks to investigate the performance of the main engine, the change in friction resistances and loads, the fuel consumption and ship speed.

  • In this study, friction angles on the surface of vertical rigid ground anchor in normally consolidated dry sand were measured by model pullout tests in laboratory. Friction angles were obtained from the normal and shear stresses measured along depth of the anchor stir face by attaching several 2-dimensional load cells. Model tests were conducted under the plane strain state and axial symmetric state. From the results of tests, it was concluded that the maximum friction angle on the anchor surface coincides nearly with the maximum angle of stress obliquity on the plane of zero-extension direction obtained by plane strain compression test. This result was made with regard to the strength anisotropy and stress dependency of sand. It showed that when angle of shear resistance of the sand is applied to the friction angle of the anchor surface, the design capacity could be less than the applied force, thus making the anchor unsafe.
