To evaluate methods of determining near-surface shear-wave velocities (${\nu}_s$), we derived dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves generated by both passive and active sources in Chuncheon, Korea. Microtremors were recorded for 5 minutes in each of four triangular arrays with radii of 5 ~ 40 m. Those data were analyzed using the Spatial Autocorrelation method. Rayleigh waves were also generated by a hammer source and recorded in the same area for 2 s using 24 4.5-Hz geophones. Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves was applied to those data. Velocity spectra were derived with relatively high signal-to-noise ratios in the frequency ranges of 7 ~ 19 and 11 ~ 50 Hz for the microtremors and synthetically generated Rayleigh waves, respectively. The resultant dispersion curves were combined as one and then input to inversion to derive shear wave velocities that were compared with a lithology log from a nearby well. Shearwave velocities in the top soil and soft-rock layers are almost constant with values of 221 and 846 m/s, respectively; while the inverse-modeled ${\nu}_s$ increases linearly in the gravelly sand, cobbles, and weathered-rock layers. If rock type is classified based on shear-wave velocity, the inversion-derived boundary between weathered-rock and soft rock may be about 5 m deeper than in the well log.

Geophysical exploration techniques are effective for monitoring changes in the ground condition around the excavation project to prevent subsidence risks during excavation work, therefore, improving analysis techniques is required for applying and supplementing various geophysical exploration technologies. In this study, a field-scale on-site test was conducted to detect possible ground subsidence hazards and areas of relaxation zone that may occur during excavation work and due to underground water level changes. In order to carry out the field test, a real-scale excavation test bed was constructed and the geophysical exploration methods, such as electrical resistivity survey and multi-channel analysis of surface wave (MASW) survey for urban sites condition, have researched for optimal geophysical exploration parameter, design and correlation analysis between the results by reviewing the validity of each individual geophysical exploration and modeling. The results of this study showed the impact of each geophysical exploration on the relaxation zone and, in particular, the location of the underground water surface and the effects of excavation were identified using electrical resistivity survey. Further research on modeling will be required, taking into account the effects of excavation and groundwater.
In terms of high resolution, seismic reflection survey is by far the most significant geophysical method applied to define subsurface structure. In shallow seismic reflection survey, it is, however, difficult to obtain high resolution image due to both the wave attenuation in the unconsolidated layer and the existence of source-generated surface waves Therefore, when collecting data, it is imperative to select proper equipments and choose optimum field data acquisition parameters for acquiring high S/N data. In this survey, a small size hammer was used as a low energy source and 40-Hz vertical geophones were used as receivers. Trigger signal was obtained from the hammer starter attached in the aluminum plate and thus it was possible to control the source onset time for the vertical stack. During the field work, a modified standard CMP technique was introduced to achieve the many-fold CMP data effectively. Data processing was conducted by the 'Seismic Unix' which is mounted on PC with a Linux operating system. The main distinctions were the emphasis and detail placed on near-surface velocity analysis and the extra care exercised in muting.
A shallow high-resolution seismic reflection survey was carried out at the Mineopo tidal flat on the western coast of Korea. The purpose of the survey was to investigate shallow sedimentary structure of the tidal flat associated with the recent sea level change. A total of 795 shots were generated at 1 m interval from a 5-kg hammer source and recorded on 48 channels of 100 Hz geophones along two mutually perpendicular profiles. The water-saturated ground condition resulted in suppressed ground rolls by significantly decreasing rigidity. In addition, seismic velocities over 1500 m/s provided easy segregation of reflected arrivals from lower velocity noise. As a consequence, seismic sections from the study area show significantly higher resolution and signal to noise ratio than conventional land seismic sections. The tidal flat consists of 5 sedimentary sequences above acoustic basement. The seismic sections reveal the continuous structure of the tidal flat formed in association with sea level rise during the Holocene.
To locate anomalous features including seepage pathways through the Daeryong earth-fill dam, P and Rayleigh waves were recorded along a 250-m profile on the crest of the dam. Seismic energy was generated using a 5-kg sledgehammer and detected by 24 4.5-Hz vertical-axis geophones installed at 3-m intervals. P-wave and apparent S-wave velocities of the reservoir dam and underlying bedrock were then inverted from first-arrival traveltimes and dispersion curves of Rayleigh waves, respectively. Apparent dynamic Poisson's ratios as high as 0.46 were obtained at the base of the dam near its north-east end, where an outlet conduit occurs, and in the clay core body near the south-west end of the profile where the dam was repeatedly grouted to abate seepage before our survey. These anomalies of higher Poisson's ratios in the upper part of clay core were also associated with effusion of grout on the downstream slope of the dam during post-survey grouting to abate leakage. Combining P-wave traveltime tomography and inversion of Rayleigh wave velocities was very effective in detecting potential pathways for seepage and previous grouted zones in this earthen dam.

Two-dimensional imaging of $V_s$ profile becomes more important in Korea because of the large horizontal variation of soil stiffness. To obtain a shear-wave velocity profile in geotechnical practice, various seismic nondestructive investigation methods are being frequently used. In this study, harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) method is applied to the determination of $V_s$ profile to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. Field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because one experimental setup which consists of one pair of receivers is needed to determine $V_s$ profile of site. The proposed method uses the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity to minimize the effects of noise, and uses single array inversion which considers receiver locations. Field tests were performed in 2 sites in order to evaluate accuracy of test method and estimate the applicability of 2-D imaging by HWAW method. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the good accuracy and applicability of the proposed method were verified.
Structures show the phehomena of deformation and lowering of function with time-lapse by artificial environments and changes of geotechnical conditions or accumulation of initial deformation elements. This study aims the structural assessment of cultural property, Chum-Sung-Dae, located in Kyeongju city, Korea. It was built about 1,300 years ago, and has undergone deformation and ground-subsidence with time-lapse. Non-destructive evaluation techniques were applied to the Chum-Sung-Dae, to protect it from survey Because of this reason, 3D precise laser scanning surveying system was applied to measure the exact size of Chum-Sung-Dae, displacement and declining angles. Geophysical exploration also was applied to study the subsurface distribution of geotechnical parameters or physical properties. Natural frequencies were measured from real and model of Chum-Sung-Dae to study the dynamic characteristics of vibration and/or earthquake load and stiffness of structures.
In order to delineate the soft ground distribution, an integrated geostatistical analysis was performed using the MASW (Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave) which has the information of overall region and CPTu (Piezo Cone Penetration Test) which provides the direct information of the measuring point of the ground. MASW results were known to have close relationship with the ground stiffness. This correlation was confirmed through the comparison of MASW data obtained from two survey lines to the laboratory test with extracted soil samples. 3D physical property distribution in the study area was acquired by geostatistical integrated analysis with the data of tip resistance ($q_c$) and pore pressure (u) from the CPTu obtained at 6 points within the study area. The integrated analysis was conducted by applying the COSGSIM (Sequential Gaussian Co-Simulation) technology which can carry out the simulation in accordance with the spatial correlation between the MASW results and both tip resistance and pore pressure. Besides the locations of CPTu, borehole investigations were also conducted at two different positions. As a result, the N value of SPT and borehole log could be secured, so these data were used for the analysis of the geotechnical engineering accuracy of the integrated analysis result. For the verification of reliability of the 3D distribution of tip resistance and pore pressure secured through integrated analysis, the geotechnical information gained from the two drilling areas was compared, and the result showed extremely high correlation.
conversion equations to calculate seismic moment(M_0) from body-wave magnitude(m_b), surface-wave magnitude(M_s), or both were derived by using 50 earthquakes occurred within 32~44°N and 123~133°E whose M_0 were determined together with m_b or M_s. We divided those earthquakes into the deeper and the shallower ones based on the reference focal depth of 70 km. The unit of M_0 is dyne-cm. In case of M_s, the deeper earthquakes exhibit the higher seismic moment than the shallower ones. Standard deviations associated with conversion equations for deeper and shallower earthquakes are 0.25 and 0.16, respectively, in moment magnitude. , for deeper earthquakes , for shallower earthquakes. In case of m_b, the dependence of conversion equation on focal depth is not clearly observed. Associated standard deviation is 0.28 in moment magnitude. In case that both m_b and M_s were determined, a new magnitude, , were defined for shallower earthquakes to derive a more stable conversion equation. Associated standard deviation is 0.14 in moment magnitude. Conversion equations above can be used to unify the earthquake size into a single magnitude type, i.e., moment magnitude, in and around the Korea Peninsula.
Applicabilities of two numerical methods, the 2-dimensional and the 3-dimensional method, are evaluated to inverse test results obtained from the underwater SASW(Spectral -Analysis-of-Surface-Waves) method. As a result of this study, it has been found that the 2-dimensional method can supposed to be applicable for the cases where stiffness of soil layer increases gradually with depth, and the stiffness is relatively low. For the other cases, however, it has been concluded that the 3-dimensional method needs to be applied to determine realistic theoretical dispersion curves. An example is also shown that in situ soil profile underwater is estimated from experimental dispersion curves using the 3-dimensional method. As a results, it can be concluded that the underwater SASW method can be effectively applied to explore the underwater soil condition.
