  • GOCi (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) is one of the COMS payloads that KARI is currently developing and scheduled to be in operation from around 2008. Its primary objective is to monitor the Korean coastal water environmental condition. We report the current progress in development of the integrated optical model as one of the key analysis tools for the GOCI in-orbit performance verification. The model includes the Sun as the emitting light source. The curved Earth surface section of 2500 km x 2500 km includingthe Korean peninsular os defined as a Lambertian scattering surface consisted of land and sea surface. From its geostationary orbit, the GOCI optical system observes the reflected light from the surfaces with varying reflectance representing the changes in its environmental conditions. The optical ray tracing technique was used to demonstrate the GOCI in-orbit performances such as red tide detection. The computational concept, simulation results and its implications to the on-going development of GOCI are presented.

  • Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) is an extension of particle image velocimetry (PIV) for measurement of flows spanning large areas in laboratory or field conditions. LSPIV is composed of six elements - seeding, illumination, recording, image transformation, image processing, postprocessing - based on PIV. Possible error elements at each step of Mobile LSPIV (MLSPIV), which is a mobile version of LSPIV, in field applications are identified and summarized the effect of the errors which were quantified in the previous studies. The total number of elemental errors is 27, and five error sources were evaluated previously, seven elemental errors are not effective to the current MLSPIV system. Among 15 elemental errors, four errors - sampling time, image resolution, tracer, and wind - are investigated through an experiment at a laboratory to figure out how those errors affect to velocity calculation. The analysis to figure out the effect of the number of images used for image processing on the velocity calculation error shows that if over 50 images or more are used, the error due to it goes below 1 %. The effect of the image resolution on velocity calculation was investigated through various image resolution using digital camera. Low resolution image set made 3 % of velocity calculation error comparing with high resolution image set as a reference. For the effect of tracers and wind, the wind effect on tracer is decreasing remarkably with increasing the flume bulk velocity. To minimize the velocity evaluation error due to wind, tracers with high specific gravity is favorable.

  • Four subtypes of hepatitis B surface antigen are useful in the epidemiologic studies of the route of virus transmission and clinical significance of simultaneous occurance of hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen in the same serum as well as useful marker for population migration. The sera were obtained from 214 HBs Ag positive patients who are diagnosed as chronic liver disease and following up in the Yeungnam university hospital. The subtypes were determined by solid-phase sandwich EIA using monoclonal antibodies. Among 214 specimens, the subtype adr was 93.9%, adw was 2.8%, ayr was 0.9%, ar was 0.9%, adwr was 1.4% and ayw was not detected. There were no correlation between subtype pattern and disease. In summary, the subtype adr was prominent in our study and the difference of subtype pattern by severity of disease was not significant. However, to determine the prognostic value of HBs Ag subtype and relationship between subtype and disease progression, long-term follow up will be needed.

  • A ray tracing method to analyze the propagation channel characteristics for a millimeter-wave indoor wireless communication system is presented. Reflected rays from planar as well as rough surfaces are included. Transmitted rays though a thin dielectric slab are considered. Maps representing received power levels and RMS delay spread from a transmitter in a rectangular room are shown. The received power levels in the empty room for bottom's roughness factors of 0 and 0.13 are represented. The simulation results are well consistent with the calculation of Friis equation with reflection coefficient. Any size of furniture the shape of plane form can be positioned anywhere in the room.

  • A numerical analysis of two phase flow in the solid rocket nozzle was conducted. Stoke number was defined over the various aluminum oxide($AI_2$$O_3$) particle sizes and particle trajectories were treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability was considered by the definition of Weber number in a rocket nozzle. Large particles are divided after the nozzle throat as the flow accelerates rapidly. The division of particles changes the particle distribution at the nozzle exit. From the above results, it was found that the nozzle converge section surface might be affected by aluminum oxide particles. Also, Mechanical erosion rate of nozzle surface was predicted for different materials.

  • Bound abrasive grinding is used for the initial fabrication phase of the precision aspheric mirrors for both space and ground based astronomical telescopes. We developed a new grinding optimization process that determines the input grinding variables for the target surface roughness, checks the grinding error magnitude in resulting surface roughnesses, and minimizes the required machining time. Using the machining data collected from the previous grinding runs and subsequently fed into the multivariable regression engine, the process has the evolving controllability that suggests the optimum set of grinding variables for each target surface roughness. The process model was then used for ten grinding experiments that resulted in the grinding accuracy of $=-0.906{\pm}3.38(\sigma)\;nm(Ra)$ for the target surface roughnesses of Zerodur substrate ranging from 96.1 nm (Ra) to 65.0 nm (Ra) The results imply that the quantitative process optimization technique developed in this study minimizes the machining time and offers the nanometric surface roughness controllability superior to the traditional, qualitative, craftsman based grinding process for the astronomical optical surfaces.

  • A position estimation technique is presented for a missile using high-resolution range profiles obtained by three wideband radars. Radar measures a target range using a reflected signal from the surface of a missile. However, it is difficult to obtain the range between the radar and the origin of the missile. For this reason, the interior angle between the moving missile and tracking radar is calculated, and a compensated range between surface of the missile and its origin is added to the tracking range of the radar. Therefore, position estimation of a missile can be achieved by using three total ranges from each radar to the origin of the missile. To verify the position estimation of the missile, electromagnetic numerical analysis software was used to prove the compensated range according to the flight position. Moreover, a wideband radar operating at 500-MHz bandwidth was applied, and its range profile was used for the position estimation of a missile.

  • Numerical simulation of fluid flow with moving free surface has been carried out. For the free surface flow, a VOF(Volume of Fluid)-based algorithm utilizing a fixed grid system has been investigated. In order to reduce numerical smearing at the free surface represented on a fixed grid system, a new free surface tracking algorithm based on the donor-acceptor scheme has been presented. Novel features of the proposed algorithm are characterized as two numerical tools; the orientation vector to represent the free surface orientation in each cell and the baby-cell to determine the fluid volume flux at each cell boundary. The proposed algorithm can be easily implemented in any irregular non-uniform grid systems that are usual in finite element method (FEM). Moreover, the proposed algorithm can be extended and applied to the 3-D free surface flow problem without additional efforts. For computation of unsteady incompressible flow, a finite element approximation based on the explicit fractional step method has been adopted. In addition, the SUPG(streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method has been implemented to deal with convection dominated flows. Combination of the proposed free surface tracking scheme and explicit fractional step formulation resulted in an efficient solution algorithm. Validity of the present solution algorithm was demonstrated from its application to the broken dam and the solitary wave propagation problems.

  • This paper dealt with the application of a numerical method developed by the authors using the matching method proposed in the previous paper on "The Nonlinear motions of cylinders(I)[16]", and Cauchy's theorem to the problems associated with hydrodynamic forces acting on a heaving cylinders translating in a calm water and also motions of cylinders in waves. In spectral method. body boundary condition in submerged case is satisfied exactly but one in floating case is not satisfied exactly. In the numerical code developed here, the boundary condition at the free-surface and body surface is satisfied exactly at its instaneous position. It is of interest to note that the present scheme could be applied to a free-surface-piercing body without experiencing a difficulty in the numerical convergence. The computed results are compared with other results([6], [12]).

  • The long-lived radionuclide, $^{10}Be$, is produced by cosmic-ray effects in the atmosphere of the earth as well as its surface and that of other planetary surfaces and atmospheres. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was developed in late 1970s, which made $^{10}Be$ terrestrial measurements more feasible. Since then, many research applications of $^{10}Be$ for both terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications have been developed, which parallel the wide range of radiocarbon ($^{14}C$) research applications. This paper summarizes production mechanisms of $^{10}Be$ both in the atmosphere and on the surface of terrestrial and extraterrestrial environments and also provides numerous $^{10}Be$ research applications in the fields of geomorphology, oceanography, archaeology, glaciology, cosmochemistry, climatology, and planetary science. We also review some $^{10}Be$ AMS research applications.
