In distributed HLR environment, the pointer forwarding with distributed HLR(Pointer Forwarding Scheme) has been proposed for eliminating the cost of updating multiple HLRs. In Pointer Forwarding Scheme, the find cost can be changed according to from which HLR a call originates. If a user changes PCS registration areas frequently, but receives calls relatively infrequently, and call for such a user originates from any other HLRs than the recently updated HLR, many VLRs should be traversed in order to find that user. In this paper, location tracking with jumping pointer in distributed HLR(Jumping Pointer Scheme) is proposed. The jumping pointer can be connected between the recently updated VLR and the VLR in which the mobile host currently resides. In case of call delivery, the mobile host can be found sooner by using the jumping pointer. In terms of 'find' cost, Jumping Pointer scheme improves about 17% over Forwarding Pointer scheme. Otherwise, Jumping Pointer scheme takes additional update charge in order to manage the jumping pointer. However the total costs of 'find' cost and 'update' cost for Jumping Pointer scheme are cheaper than them for Forwarding Pointer scheme when call-to-mobility ratio is smaller.
Proxy mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) protocol is a network-based mobility management protocol to support mobility for IPv6 nodes without host involvement. In PMIPv6, the Mobile Access Gateway (MAG) incurs a high signaling cost to update the location of a mobile node to the remote Local Mobility Anchor (LMA) if it moves frequently. This increases network overhead on the LMA, wastes network resources, and lengthens the delay time. Therefore, we propose a new mobility management scheme for minimizing signaling cost using the pointer forwarding. Our proposal can reduce signaling costs by registration with the neighbor MAG instead of the remote LMA using the pointer forwarding. The cost analysis using imbedded Markov chain presented in this paper shows that our proposal can achieve performance superior that of PMIPv6 scheme.

We propose efficient mobility management schemes based on pointer forwarding for Proxy Mobile IPv6 Networks(PMIPv6) with the objective to reduce the overall network traffic incurred by mobility management and packet delivery. The proposed schemes are per-user-based, i.e., the optimal threshold of the forwarding chain length that minimizes the overall network traffic is dynamically determined for each individual mobile user, based on the user's specific mobility and service patterns. We demonstrate that there exists an optimal threshold of the forwarding chain length, given a set of parameters characterizing the specific mobility and service patterns of a mobile user. We also demonstrate that our schemes yield significantly better performance than schemes that apply a static threshold to all mobile users. A comparative analysis shows that our pointer forwarding schemes outperform routing-based mobility management protocols for PMIPv6.

Recently much research for developing forwarding table that support fast router without employing both special hardware and new protocols. This article introduces a new forwarding data structure based on the software to enable forwarding lookup to be penormed at giga-bit speed. The forwarding table is known as a bottleneck of the routers penormance due to its high complexity proportional to the forwarding table size. The recent research that based on the software uses a Patricia trie and its variants. and also uses a hash function with prefix length key and others. The proposed forwarding table structure construct a forwarding table by the bit stream array in which it constructs trie from routing table prefix entries and it represents each pointer pointing the child node and the associated forwarding table entry with one bit The trie structure and routing prefix pointer need a large memory when representing those by linked-list or array. but in the proposed data structure, the needed memory size is small enough since it represents information with one bit. Additionally, by use a lookup method that start searching at desired middle level we can shorten the search path. The introduced data structure. called bit-map trie shows that we can implement a fast forwarding engine on the conventional Pentium processor by reducing the backbone routing table fits into Level 2 cache of Pentium II processor and shortens the searching path. Our experiments to evaluate the performance of proposed method show that this bit-map trie accomplishes 5.7 million lookups per second.
This paper proposes an efficient data structure for forwarding IPv4 and IPv6 packets at the gigabit speed in backbone routers. The LPM(Longest Prefix Matching) search becomes a bottleneck of routers' performance since the LPM complexity grows in proportion to the forwarding table size and the address length. To speed up the forwarding process, this paper introduces a data structure named BMT(Bit-Map Tie) to minimize the frequent main memory accesses. All the necessary search computations in BMT are done over a small index table stored at cache. To build the small index table from the tie representation of the forwarding table, BMT represents a link pointer to the child node and a node pointer to the corresponding entry in the forwarding table with one bit respectively. To improve the poor performance of the conventional tries when their height becomes higher due to the increase of the address length, BMT adopts a binary search algorithm for determining the appropriate level of tries to start. The simulation experiments show that BMT compacts the IPv4 backbone routers' forwarding table into a small one less than 512-kbyte and achieves the average speed of 250ns/packet on Pentium II processors, which is almost the same performance as the fastest conventional lookup algorithms.
Packet forwarding in the Internet routers is to find out the longest prefix that matches the destination address of an input packet and to forward the input packet to the output port designated by the longest matched prefix. The IP address lookup is the key of the packet forwarding, and it is required to have efficient data structures and search algorithms to provide the high-speed lookup performance. In this paper, an efficient IP address lookup algorithm using binary search is investigated. Most of the existing binary search algorithms are not efficient in search performance since they do not provide a balanced search. The proposed binary search algorithm performs perfectly balanced binary search using switch pointers. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using actual backbone routing data and it is shown that the proposed algorithm provides very good search performance without increasing the memory amount storing the forwarding table. The proposed algorithm also provides very good scalability since it can be easily extended for multi-way search and for large forwarding tables
One of the main challenges in personal communication services(PCS ) Is to locate many mobile terminals that nay move from place to place frequently. This kind of system operation is called location management. This task entails sophisticated signaling traffic and database queries. Several strategies have been proposed to improve the efficiency of location management. These strategies use location register databases to store the current locations of mobile terminals, and are vulnerable to failure of the location register databases. In this paper, we propose a fault-tolerant pointer forwarding scheme with distributed home location register in order to tolerate the failure of location registers. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated analytically by simulation, and Is compared with Biaz's bypass forwarding strategy and two-path forwarding strategy.
Mobile IP provides an efficient and scalable mechanism for host mobility within the Internet. Using Mobile If, mobile nodes may change their point of attachment to the Internet without changing their If address. However, it would result in a high signaling cost. To reduce the signaling cost, we factor in the fact that mobile users will not be actively communicating much of the time. In fact, there Is no necessity to send a binding update message to the home agent when an mobile node does not communicates with others while moving. From this point of view, we propose a lazy update strategy for minimizing signaling cost using the forwarding pointer in hierarchical Mobile IPv6. In our proposal, binding updates are sent only when a mobile node is in a busy mode. If an mobile node is in a dormant mode, binding update messages are delayed until busy mode using the forwarding pointer. As a result, our proposal can reduce the total signaling cost by eliminating unnecessary binding update messages when a mobile node Is in a dormant mode. In addition to, our proposal reduces unnecessary location update cost resulting from ping-pong effect under mobile node's dormant mode. Analysis results using the discrete analytic model presented in this paper shows that our proposal can has superior performance than hierarchical Mobile nv6 when the call-to-mobility ratio is low and the length of the forwarding pointer chain K is low.
This paper presents an efficient hybrid technique to compact the trie indexing the huge forward table small enough to be stored into cache for speeding up IP lookup. It combines two techniques, an encoding scheme called bit-map and a controlled-prefix expanding scheme to replace slow memory search with few fast-memory accesses and computations. For compaction, the bit-map represents each index and child pointer with one bit respectively. For example, when one node denotes n bits, the bit-map gives a high compression rate by consumes $2^{n-1}$ bits for $2^n$ index and child link pointers branched out of the node. The controlled-prefix expanding scheme determines the number of address bits represented by all root node of each trie's level. At this time, controlled-prefix scheme use a dynamic programming technique to get a smallest trie memory size with given number of trie's level. This paper proposes standard that can choose suitable trie structure depending on memory size of system and the required IP lookup speed presenting optimal memory size and the lookup speed according to trie level number.
