Evaluation of Mechanical Properties for the Compacted Bentonite Buffer Materials (압축 벤토나이트 완충재의 역학 물성 평가)

  • The compacted bentonite buffer is one of the most important components in an engineered barrier system (EBS) to dispose of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) produced by nuclear power generation. The compacted bentonite buffer has a crucial role in protecting the disposal canister against the external impact and penetration of groundwater, so it has to satisfy the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical requirements. Even though there have been various researches on the investigation of thermal-hydraulic properties, few studies have been conducted to evaluate mechanical properties for the compacted bentonite buffer. For this reason, this paper conducted a series of unconfined compression tests and obtained mechanical properties such as unconfined compressive strength, elastic modulus, and void ratio of Korean compacted bentonite specimens with different water content and dry density values. The unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus increased, and the Poisson's ratio decreased a little with increasing dry density. It showed that unconfined compressive strength and elastic modulus were proportional to dry density. However, there was not a remarkable correlation between mechanical properties and water content.

  • A method to determine elastic constants for transversely isotropic rock using a single uniaxial compression test was proposed by Kim(1995). However, some problems were found when this method was applied. We derived two different equations in determination of elastic constants using V$\sub$12/ and V$\sub$21/ and performed uniaxial compression tests for two specimens whose angles between transversely isotropic plane and horizontal plane are 30$^{\circ}C$ and 65$^{\circ}C$. The anisotropic elastic constants should be calculated with different equations depend on the angle. If the anisotropic angle is lower than 45$^{\circ}$, V$\sub$21/ may be used. However, if the anisotropic angle is higher than 45$^{\circ}$, V$\sub$12/ may be used.

Analysis on Physical and Mechanical Properties of Rock Mass in Korea (국내에 분포하는 암반의 물리·역학적 특성 분석)

  • To understand the mechanical properties of rock masses and intact rock in Korea, data from 4,280 in situ and laboratory tests from 107 tunnels on general national roads were analyzed. The mechanical properties (unit weight, cohesion, friction angle, modulus of deformation, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, uniaxial compressive strength, tensile strength, coefficient of permeability, and specific gravity) were analyzed by rock types and strength of rock in each rock type. The results of analysis, the mean specific gravity was highest in gneiss. The coefficient of permeability and Poisson's ratio show the highest mean values in granite and metamorphic rock, respectively. In addition, the unit weight, cohesion and friction angle in sedimentary rock, modulus of deformation, Young's modulus, uniaxial compressive strength and tensile strength in volcanic rock have the highest mean values. The values for each mechanical property showed wide ranges by the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock masses in spite of detailed analysis by rock type and classification of rocks according to the strength.

Bayesian Approaches to Zero Inflated Poisson Model (영 과잉 포아송 모형에 대한 베이지안 방법 연구)

  • In this paper, we consider Bayesian approaches to zero inflated Poisson model, one of the popular models to analyze zero inflated count data. To generate posterior samples, we deal with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method using a Gibbs sampler and an exact sampling method using an Inverse Bayes Formula(IBF). Posterior sampling algorithms using two methods are compared, and a convergence checking for a Gibbs sampler is discussed, in particular using posterior samples from IBF sampling. Based on these sampling methods, a real data analysis is performed for Trajan data (Marin et al., 1993) and our results are compared with existing Trajan data analysis. We also discuss model selection issues for Trajan data between the Poisson model and zero inflated Poisson model using various criteria. In addition, we complement the previous work by Rodrigues (2003) via further data analysis using a hierarchical Bayesian model.

The Analysis of the Number of Donations Based on a Mixture of Poisson Regression Model (포아송 분포의 혼합모형을 이용한 기부 횟수 자료 분석)

  • The aim of this study is to analyse a survey data on the number of charitable donations using a mixture of two Poisson regression models. The survey was conducted in 2002 by Volunteer 21, an nonprofit organization, based on Koreans, who were older than 20. The mixture of two Poisson distributions is used to model the number of donations based on the empirical distribution of the data. The mixture of two Poisson distributions implies the whole population is subdivided into two groups, one with lesser number of donations and the other with larger number of donations. We fit the mixture of Poisson regression models on the number of donations to identify significant covariates. The expectation-maximization algorithm is employed to estimate the parameters. We computed 95% bootstrap confidence interval based on bias-corrected and accelerated method and used then for selecting significant explanatory variables. As a result, the income variable with four categories and the volunteering variable (1: experience of volunteering, 0: otherwise) turned out to be significant with the positive regression coefficients both in the lesser and the larger donation groups. However, the regression coefficients in the lesser donation group were larger than those in larger donation group.

Measurement of Longitudinal and Transverse Wave Speed in Solid Materials Using Immersion Ultrasonic Testing (수침 초음파 시험법을 이용한 고체의 종파와 횡파 속도의 측정)

  • Immersion ultrasonic testing (UT) was used to determine elastic moduli of solid materials instead of the widely-used contact UT method. Conventionally, immersion UT is only used for determining the longitudinal wave speed. However, in this research, transverse wave speed was measured through finding transverse wave echoes caused by mode-conversion at material's boundary. Also, even in the cases when wave speeds could not be determined due to unknown thickness, Poisson's ratio was able to be calculated from the ratio of longitudinal and transverse wave speeds. This technique was verified for several materials, and it was found that higher accuracy was obtained by immersion UT method for materials either with relatively high wave speed or with relatively small Poisson's ratio. This technique thus will be suitable fur ceramics or high strength materials.

Engineering Characteristics of Cement Milk for Bored Piles (매입말뚝공법의 충전재료로 사용되는 시멘트밀크의 공학적 특성)

  • In this study, engineering property tests were conducted for cement milk used as a filling materials in the bored piles method. For this purpose, various water/cement ratio specimens were produced on the basis of standard specimen specified in highway corporation specifications. The unconfined compressive strength, point load strength, elasticity modulus, poisson's ratio test was performed according to the age. As a test result, injection height for productions of cement milk specimens was defined ratios. Correlation coefficient K of the unconfined compressive strength and point load strength were $K_7=4.55{\sim}13.65$ in age 7 days, and $K_{28}=5.28{\sim}16.84$ in age 28 days. When water / cement ratio is 65-150%, the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio significantly increased and decreased regardless of age. In addition, the formulae were proposed for unconfined compressive strength, point load strength, a correlation coefficient of unconfined compressive strength, point load strength, elastic modulus, and poisson's ratio for each age.

  • 본 연구는 기후변화의 영향을 고려한 포아송 강우생성모형의 일종인 MBLRP(Modified Bartlett-Lewis Rectangular Pulse)를 개발하고, 대한민국 주요 도시에 대해 향후 100년간 강우의 변화를 살펴보았다. 기존 MBLRP 모형에서 기후변화에 따른 강우량 변화를 고려할 수 있도록 GCM 모형의 강우 자료를 활용하였고, GCM 모형으로부터 발생하는 불확실성을 고려하기 위해 IPCC의 RCP(Representative Concentration Pathways) 시나리오를 모의한 16개의 GCM 모형을 사용하였다. 2007년부터 2099년까지의 미래기간을 3개의 시 구간으로 구분하고, 16개 GCM 앙상블을 사용하여 미래기간 동안 대한민국 16개 도시에 대해 1000개의 샘플을 BWA 방법을 이용하여 생성하였다. 제어기간(1973-2005) 대비 미래기간(2007-2099)의 변화율을 나타내는 FOC(factor of change)와 온도의 연별 변화율을 나타내는 SF(scaling factor)의 개념을 결합하여 미래기간에 대한 CF(correction factor)를 산정하였다. 이때 CF는 16개 도시의 연 단위 강우량 변화 비율을 월별로 나타내며, 제어기간의 월 강우 관측치와 CF를 몬테카를로 모의를 실시하여 미래기간의 강우 시나리오를 산정한다. 이를 통해 월 평균 강우량 통계치를 연 단위로 얻을 수 있으며, 월 평균 강우량이 월 평균 분산, 무강우확률, 자기상관계수와 가지는 선형 관계를 통해 강우 통계치를 산출한다. 이와 같은 강우 통계치는 가상강우생성모형인 MBLRP 모형에 입력 자료로 활용되어 월 강우량을 시 단위의 강우 시계열 자료로 생성해낸다. 최종적으로 MBLRP 모형으로 산정된 시 단위 강우 시계열은 기후변화 영향을 고려한 GCMs 앙상블로 생성된 강우 시나리오를 기반으로 산출되기 때문에 향후 수자원 분석에 활용 가능할 것이라 기대된다.

Estimation of Deformation Modulus of Basaltic Rock Masses in Northeastern and Northwestern Jeju Island (제주도 북동부 및 북서부 현무암반의 변형계수 추정)

  • In this study, the in situ deformation moduli, which were measured by borehole loading tests at basaltic rock masses located in the northeastern onshore and offshore and the northwestern onshore of Jeju Island, were examined in relation to RQD and RMR. The measured deformation moduli were also compared with the estimated deformation moduli from conventional empirical formulas using RQD and RMR. In addition, the measured deformation moduli were analyzed with respect to both the velocity ratio ($V_P/V_S$) and dynamic Poisson's ratio, which were obtained from the elastic wave velocities measured by velocity logging tests. As results, with only RQD, it was inappropriate to evaluate the quality of the Jeju island basaltic rock masses, which are characterized by vesicular structures, to select a measurement method of in situ deformation moduli, and to estimate the deformation moduli. On the other hand, it was desirable to evaluate the quality of the Jeju Island basaltic rock masses, and to estimate the deformation moduli by using RMR. The conventional empirical formulas using RMR overestimated the deformation moduli of the Jeju Island basaltic rock masses. There was qualitative consistency in the relation between velocity ratio and deformation moduli. To estimate appropriately the deformation moduli of the Jeju Island basaltic rock masses, empirical formulas were proposed as the function of RMR and velocity ratio, respectively.

The factors of insurance solicitor's turnovers of life insurance using Poisson regression (포아송회귀 모형을 활용한 생명보험 설계사들의 이직 요인 분석)

  • This study investigates factors affecting the number of insurance solicitor's turnovers of life insurance companies based on questionnaire about them. Since the response variable which is the number of insurance solicitor's turnovers is count data, it is analyzed by Poisson regression which is one of generalized regression. When work year in current company, which is direct influential factor on the number of insurance solicitor's turnovers, is controlled, affiliated corporation has been found to be the most influential factor. In addition, age, motivation to work as financial planner, monthly income, a number of average new contract per month, and final education have been identified to be important factors. If insurance solicitor's occupant organization is large company, the number of turnovers becomes small, but if the organization is general agent(GA), it becomes larger. When insurance solicitor's age is high, the number of insurance solicitor's turnovers are reduced. If the motivation to become a financial planner is due to acquaintance such as family and relatives, the number of turnovers becomes small.
