  • Thermopiezoelastic snap-through phenomena of piezolaminated plates are investigated by applying an are-length scheme to Newton-Raphson method. Based on the layerwise displacement theory and von Karman strain-displacement relationships, nonlinear finite element formulations are derived for the thermopiezoelastic composite plates. From the static and dynamic viewpoint, nonlinear thermopierzoelastic behavior and vibration characteristicx are stuied for symmetric and eccentric structural models with various piezoelestric actuation modes. Present results show the possibility to enhance the performance, namely thermopiezoelastic snapping, induced by the excessive piezoelectric actuation in the active suppression of thermally buckled large deflection piezolaminated paltes.

  • In this paper, a spectral finite element method for a rectangular sandwich plate with viscoelastic core having the Levy-type boundary conditions has been plated. The sandwich plate consists of two isotropic and elastic face plates with a surfaced-bonded viscoelastic core. For the analysis, the in-plane and transverse energy in the face plates and only shear energy in the core are considered, respectively. To account for the frequency dependent complex shear modulus of the viscoelastic core, the Golla-Hughes-McTavish model is adopted. To evaluate the validity and accuracy of the proposed method, the frequency response function and dynamic responses of the sandwich plate with all edges simply supported subject to an impact load are calculated and compared with those calculated by a finite element method. Though these calculations, it is confirmed that the proposed method is very reliable and efficient one for vibration analysis of a rectangular sandwich plate with viscoelastic core having the Levy-type boundary conditions.

  • Although various fast and simple, testing devices have been developed in many countries such as the U.S, Japan, and European countries, these testing devices are not commonly used in Korea. In this study, compaction fur the field density test was carried out with a hand-guided vibrating roller. The results of the field density test were compared with those of the new testing devices such as the geogauge, soil impact hammer(CASPFOL), light falling weight deflectometer(LFWD), dynamic cone penetration(DCP). Regression analyses were conducted with the data from new testing devices. The analysis results showed that the correlation coefficients were high in the range of $70{\sim}95%$.

  • Finite Element Method(FEM) is the essential tools for analyzing structural and vibration problem. But common commercial program is high-priced and the usage is not easy. Hereby the authors developed FEM program by using Matlab, whose usage is very simple and whose performance is very high. For the convenience of use and calculating efficiency Component Mode Synthesis Method is adopted, which divides a structure by some sub-structures for easy handling, analyzes them by parts and analyzes the structure with encompassing Degrees of Freedom(DOF). And encompassed DOF could be restored to full DOF. To confirm the accuracy the program was applied to a flat plate, and the results were compared to experiment, and good agreements were achieved. The developed program is going to be opened to public.

  • Wave reflection and transmission characteristics in waveguides are an important issue in many engineering applications. A combined spectral element and finite element (SE/FE) method is used to investigate the effects of local non-uniformities but limited at relatively low frequencies because the SE is formulated by using a beam theory. For higher frequency applications, a method named a combined spectral super element and finite element (SSE/FE) method was presented recently, replacing spectral elements with spectral super elements. This SSE/FE approach requires a long computing time due to the coupling of SSE and FE matrices. If a local non-uniformity has a uniform cross-section along its short length, the FE part could be further replaced by SSE, which improves performance of the combined SSE/FE method in terms of the modeling effort and computing time. In this paper SSEs are combined to investigate the characteristics of waves propagating along waveguides possessing geometric non-uniformities. Two models are regarded: a rail with a local defect and a periodically ribbed plate. In the case of the rail example, firstly, the results predicted by a combined SSE/FE method are compared with those from the combined SSEs in order to justify that the combined SSEs work properly. Then the SSEs are applied to a ribbed plate which has periodically repeated non-uniformities along its length. For the ribbed plate, the propagation characteristics are investigated in terms of the propagation constant.

  • This paper reports the active vibration control of plates using a positive position feedback(PPF) controller with moment pair actuators. The equations of motion of the plates under a force and moment pairs are derived and the equations of PPF controllers are formulated. The numerical active control system is then achieved. The effect of the parameters - gain and damping ratio - of the PPF controllers on the open loop transfer function was investigated mainly in terms of the system stability. Increasing the gain of the PPF controller tuned at a mode, the magnitude of the open loop transfer function is increased at all frequencies without changing the phase behavior. The increase of the damping ratio of the PPF controller leads to decrease the magnitude of the open loop transfer function and to modify its phase characteristics, ie, system stability. Based on the behavior of the gain and the damping ratio of the controller, PPF controller for reduction of the plate vibration can be achieved. Two PPF controllers are designed with their connection in parallel to control the two modes simultaneously. Each PPF controller is tuned at the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ modes, respectively. Their parameters were determined to remain the system to be stable based on the results of the parametric study. A significant reduction in vibration at the tuned modes can be obtained.

  • This study aims to understand the mode characteristics of a droplet under a periodic forced vibration. To predict the resonance frequency of a droplet, theoretical and experimental approaches were employed. A high-speed camera was used to capture the various deformation characteristics of a droplet-mode shape, detachment, separated secondary droplet, and skewed deformation. The comparison between the theoretical and the experimental approaches shows a ~10% discrepancy in the prediction of the resonance frequency, which appears to be caused by the effect of contact line friction, nonlinear wall adhesion, and experimental uncertainty. Owing to contact-line pinning and smaller amplitude, the droplet shape becomes symmetric and the size of each lobe at the resonance frequency exceeds that at the neighbor, which is out of resonance.

  • The response characteristics of the PZT transducers during glass capillary breakage were studied at the epicenter of the glass plate. The PZT transducers had been made by using EC-65 PZT ceramics(supplied by Edo co.) with a constant area and a various thickness. The theoretical displacement and velocity at the epicenter of glass plate with an air boundary condition were calculated by assuming the point load of 1N force strength and a rise time of 280 ns with a ramped functional dependence, and the 1st pulses of the PZT transducer may be considered as the vertical velocity incident on the electrode of the PZT ceramic. The responses of the PZT transducer may be depended on the thickness mode of the PZT ceramic below 0.33 in the ratio of the thickness to the diameter of PZT ceramic, but the reponse of the PZT transducer may be depended on the other modes of PZT transducer in the addition of the thickness mode of the PZT ceramic above 0.33. The full time of half maximum at the 1st pulse was nearly 280 ns without a variation of applied breakage load and the resonant frequency of the PZT transducer, and then may be considered as the rise time of a AE source. The maximum amplitude of the 1st pulse depended on the incident vertical velocity and capacitance of the PZT transducer. Therefore, the full time of half maximum and maximum amplitude of the 1st pulse may be considered as the rise time and strength of acoustic emission source respectively.

  • For the perforated cylindrical shell submerged in fluid, it is almost impossible to develop a finite element model due to the necessity of the fine meshing of the shell and the fluid at the same time. This necessitates the use of solid shell with equivalent material properties. Unfortunately the effective elastic constants are not found in any references even though the ASME code is suggesting those for perforated plate. Therefore in this study the equivalent material properties of perforated shell are suggested by performing several finite element analyses with respect to the ligament efficiencies.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate experimentally the effect of surface conditions of the plate on the impinging jet noise. The experimental results about the spectrum, the sound pressure level and the directivity are pressented and discussed in relation with the surface conditions. Regardless of the surface conditions, the pure tones of high level are generated at the same frequency band and the overall sound power level of impinging jets is much higher than that of the free jet. However, the velocity dependence of the sound pressure level and the directivity are different between smooth surfaces and rough surfaces. The dependence of sound pressure level on the jet velocity shows that the smooth surface generates quadrupole-type sound like free jets. However, the perforated or the rough surface radiates sound power exactly proportional to the sixth power of the jet velocity, indicating that the source is fixed dipole type. The directivities of 1/3 octave band sound pressure level for both the free and impinging jet show the peak directivity at 115$^\circ$ upstream, probably due to the refraction associated with velocity gradient.
