  • Vibration control of plates with a passive electrical damper is presented in this paper. This electrical absorber, piezoelectric patches connected with a resistor and an inductor in series, is analogous to the damped mechanical vibration absorber. For estimating the effectiveness of piezoelectric absorber, the governing equations of motion are derived using a classical laminate plate theory and Hamilton principle. The developed theoretical analysis is validated experimentally for a simply-supported aluminum plate in order to demonstrate the performance of passive electrical damper. The result shows that the vibration amplitude is reduced about 14dB for the targeted first vibration mode.

  • Substructures position is considered as design parameter to obtain optimal structural changes to raise its dynamic characteristics. In conventional SDM (structural dynamics modification) method, the layout of modifying substructures position is first fixed and at that condition the structural optimization is performed by using the substructures size and/or material property as design parameters. But in this paper as a design variable substructures global translational and rotational position is treated. (omitted)

  • This paper dealt with an experimental study on the hydroelastic vibration of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the analytical method based on the relation between the reference kinetic and maximum potential energies and compared with the experimental results. • The attenuation of waves transmitted through non-conservative joints that are shown in many practical structures, is affected by the impedance and the orientation of the joint. In this paper, the joints between plate structures are assumed to be modeled as linear spring-dashpot systems and the transmission and reflection of vibration energy in the medium to high frequency ranges are investigated. • An E-OPMT(Electronically-controllable OPMT) was developed as an alternative of OPMT which could adjust the direction of the generated guided waves in a plate manually. The key idea of controlling the wave direction electronically is based on a few sets of axisymmetric figure-of-eight coils and the magnet which is located for making static omni-directionally biasing magnetic field over the patch. However, in order to explain wave phenomenon generated by this transducer, a new approach is required because there are various combinations between static biasing magnetic field and dynamic actuating magnetic field on the patch, not similar to OPMT. In this paper, the experiments were performed to understand characteristics of E-OPMT and the new theoretical analysis was set up for explaining the result.

  • This is concerned with the radiation pattern of elastic waves in a plate generated by an orientation-adjustable patch-type magnetostrictive transducer. In general, not only the Lamb waves but also shear horizontal (SH) waves are produced by the deformation of the circular magnetostrictive patch bonded to a plate. Among the two types of waves, this paper investigates the radiation patterns of SH waves. A number of experimental results are presented. They are also accurately predicted by a theory developed by the present authors. Experimental findings were explained by a theoretical analysis.

  • This presentation examines the characteristics of torsional vibration in axisymmetric out-of-plane vibrations of an annular Mindin plate. The out-of-plane vibration of circular or annular plates have been investigated since a long years ago by many researchers. When the classical Kirchhoff plate theory neglecting the effect of transverse shear deformation is applied to a thick plate, its out-of-plane natural frequencies are much different from reality. And so, since Minlin presented a plate theory considering the effect of rotary inertia and transverse shear deformation, many researches for the out-of-plane natural vibration of circular or annular Mindin plates have been performed. But almost all researchers missed the torsional vibration due to transverse shear deformation in axisymmetric out-of-plane vibrations of the circular or annular Mindin plate. Therefore, in this presentation, we verify the existence of torsional vibration of an annular plate and present the natural frequencies of an annular plate with free outer boundary surface.

  • Wave Transmission analysis is one of methods for power transmission and reflection coefficients in coupled infinite structures. This paper focuses the wave transmission analysis of point coupled structures among semi-infinite beams and infinite thin plates considering all kinds of waves. It is supposed that the junction through the beams and plates is an identical spot and no point of contact exist except the spot. The boundary conditions are applied at the spot for continuities of 6 DOF displacements and 6 DOF force equilibriums, and then wave fields are obtained in the coupled structures. Since wave components in plate field are simplified using asymptotic expressions of Henkel functions, the displacements and forces at the plate junction can be simply expressed with magnitudes of the wave components. The wave fields according to incident waves gives the power transmission coefficients in beam/plate point coupled structures. For both coupled structures with a beam vertically and obliquely joined to a plate, power transmission analysis is performed and the analysis results are compared and examined.

  • Though there have been many researches to investigate the relationship between the damage location, damage size and the changes in eigenparameters, there have been few studies on the small-sized damages. Thus, this paper considers the plate with small local damages. The equation of motion for damaged plate is derived in terms of the damage distribution function and then the effects of small damages on the dynamic characteristics of plate are investigated. It is observed that the damage-induced modal coupling and a sufficient number of vibration modes should be considered especially for small damage detections.
