  • Medical records of 48 pet ferrets that underwent adrenalectomy were retrospectively reviewed to investigate the frequency and clinical outcomes of adrenal diseases in pet ferrets. These diseases were most commonly diagnosed in ferrets aged 3 to 5 years and in neutered females (58.3%). Adrenal disease occurred most frequently in the left adrenal gland (72.9%), followed by involvement of both adrenal glands (16.7%) and the right adrenal gland (10.4%). The mean sizes (length * thickness) of the adrenal glands as determined by ultrasonography were 8.96 * 5.08 mm and 12.91 * 8.26 mm for the left and right adrenal glands, respectively. In the ferrets with adrenal disease, alopecia (82.2%) was the main presenting clinical signs in both sexes, and vulvar swelling was seen in 32.1% of the females with adrenal disease. The common incidental findings included renal cysts (29.2%) and splenomegaly (25.0%). Histological findings showed pheochromocytoma, adenoma, and hyperplasia in 44.7%, 14.9%, and 12.8% of cases, respectively. The survival rates at 1- and 2- years after surgery were 87.5% and 74.0%, respectively. Alopecia and vulvar swelling improved within an average of 3.4 months and 12 days after surgery.

  • Retroperitoneal teratoma was described in a 20-month-old intact female ferret (Mustela putorius furo). Retroperitoneal mass about $8{\times}5$ cm in size was surgically removed and histopathologic examination was performed. Grossly, on cross section of the mass, the consistency was soft to firm and contained several cystic structures which are filled with dried keratinous material. Histologically, the retroperitoneal mass consisted of embryologically heterogeneous tissues that include skin, bone and cartilage, adipose tissue, respiratory epithelium, and exocrine pancreatic tissue. Based on the characteristic histologic features of the mass, a diagnosis of retroperitoneal teratoma was made. Adrenal gland or ovary was suspected as the origin of the tumor.

  • A 2-year-old spayed female ferret with the clinical signs of diarrhea and anorexia for about 8 days was presented to Hansung animal hospital. The diarrhea was black and paste form. Three palpable abdominal masses were detected in physical examination. By cytologic examination using fine need aspiration, the patient was tentatively diagnosed as lymphoma. Chemotherapy was started with prednisone, vincristine and cyclophosphamide. However, the client requested stopping the therapy at day 18 and the ferret was euthanized. Autopsy was performed and the masses were confirmed as lymphoma by histopathology. Microscopically, the mass consisted of unencapsulated and infiltrative neoplasm consisted of closely packed monomorphic round cells and also ininvasive lesions observed in duodenum. On the higher magnification, pleomorphic neoplastic cells with distinct cell border and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm were observed. Finally, the ferret diagnosed as alimentary lymphoma.

  • A female domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) presented to a veterinary clinic with a clinical history of anorexia and poor body condition. Due to gradual deterioration of the body condition, explorative laparotomy was performed. Diffusely, the mesentery was severely thickened and adhered with prominent mesenteric lymph nodes. A portion of the mesentery and mesenteric lymph nodes were biopsied and fixed. Microscopic analysis revealed severe pyogranulomatous peritonitis and lymphadenitis, but staining revealed no bacterial organisms. However, immunohistochemistry for feline coronavirus exhibited strong immunoreactivity, primarily in the macrophages. Based on these results, the case was diagnosed as ferret coronavirus infection.

  • Chordoma was described in the tail masses of two ferrets. Tail masses were surgically removed and submitted for diagnosis. On histopathology, the masses from both ferrets were almost similar each other. The mass was well-demarcated and composed of lobules or sheets of neoplastic cells. The neoplastic cells were round to polygonal with distinct cell border and contained marginally located round nucleus. The cytoplasm of neoplastic cells was highly vacuolated. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive to cytokerain, vimentin, and S-100. Based on these results, both cases were diagnosed as chordoma in ferrets. Recurrence was not noted since surgery.

  • A 7 years old, female and neutered ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented to local animal hospital due to lethargy, anorexia and hypothermia. Radiography, ultrasonography and blood test were performed. On the basis of clinical signs and tests, this case was presumed to be lymphoma. In consideration of this ferret's condition, chemotherapy was carried out for the treatment. However, the ferret died a few days. After necropsy, metastatic tumors were observed over abdomen. All tumors were packed with homologous lymphocytes with pleomorphic changes and numerous mitotic figures. Consequently, this masses were diagnosed as B-cell gastrointestinal lymphoma, which were negative for CD3 on immunohistochemistry.
