  • The aim of this study is to qualitatively evaluate the cracking control effects of expansive concrete used in reinforced concrete building. The result of experiments in laboratory shows that autogenous shrinkage and drying shrinkage are suppressed by using expansive additive. The tensile stress-strength ratio is lower in expansive concrete than normal concrete under fully restrained condition. Compression stress could be effectively generated in early age in the walls in buildings by the use of expansive additive, and tensile stress due to drying shrinkage at later age eventually decreased. Additionally, visual observation at long-term ages shows that the cracking area of expansive concrete was approximately 35% of normal concrete, which confirms that the use of expansive additive reduces concrete cracking in reinforced concrete buildings.

  • In this study, Based on the constructed model in advance, we suggested the macro prediction method of shrinkage cracking reduction in concrete using expansive additives, and the method was verified. In addition, extended application of model to building, the strain of walls and slabs on building was estimated by model and the generated stress was estimated thereby comparing this with the result by existing method to verify the model's applicability and the validation of our model. From examination of theoretical model for concrete using expansive additives to examination for building levels, furthermore suggests the macro prediction method for shrinkage reduction and cracking control effects was can be supply practical data in application of expansive concrete and utility in the future.

  • The concrete pavement slabs that suffer expansion due to the Alkali-Aggregate Reaction(AAR) increase and the increase consequently causes unexpected displacement of bridge abutment. As the expansion due to the AAR is greater than that due to the temperature change, lethal load can act on bridge abutment. Therefore appropriate preventive measures may be necessary. The degree of expansion by AAR depends on the severity of AAR and geometry condition of concrete pavement and road structure. In order to prevent damage to bridge, it is effective to release the expansion force of the concrete. It would be advantageous to replace the concrete pavement with asphalt for a long section of concrete pavement.

  • Steel slag (divided into electric arc furnace slag and convener slag) is being produced by millions of tons per every year in many industrial countries. About 6.5 million tonnes of steel slag is produced yearly as an industrial by-product in Korea. Generally natural aggregate is relatively stable and does not enter into complex chemical reactions with water. Unfortunately, however. steel slag aggregate contains a small amount of free lime. The hydration of free lime makes steel slag aggregate unstable and liable to expand. In this paper, firstly, several aging methods are used in order to decrease the volume expansion of electric arc furnace slag, that is stabilization. The volume expansion of electric arc furnace slag is formulated from the experiment. From the formula, the residual expansibility is predicted with immersion expansion. Compressive strength of concrete with electric arc furnace slag has relation with the residual expansibility in slag aggregate.

  • This paper reports the physical and shrinkage properties of concrete using expansive additive(E) and three shrinkage reducing admixtures(SRA1, 2, 3) in order to reduce shrinkage of concrete. For the properties of fresh concrete, the use of SRA1, 2, 3 results in a increase in fluidity and decrease in the dosage of super plasticizer as much as 0.05$\sim$0.1%. And For the properties of hardened concrete, the use of SRA1, 2, 3 results in a decrease in compressive, tensile and flexural strength slightly. For drying shrinkage properties, the use of SRA3 is the most effective for reduction of shrinkage, and the next best way to reduce shrinkage is combination with expansive additive(E) and shrinkage reducing admixture(SRA) or the using of expansive additive(E).

  • High-performance concrete (HPC), which is particularly sensitive to self-desiccation, is required to be durable even in severe environmental conditions, i.e. costal area, cold district, etc. However, in recent years, some attention was particularly given to cracking sensitivity of high performance concrete at early age. It has been argued and demonstrated experimentally that such concrete undergoes autogenous shrinkage due to self-desiccation at early age under restrained condition, nd, as a result, internal tensile stress may develop, leading to micro cracking and macro cracking. This shrinkage-introduced crack produces a major serviceability problem for concrete structures. One possible method to reduce cracking due to autogenous shrinkage is the addition of expansive additive. Tests conducted by many researches have shown the beneficial effects of addition of expansive additive for reducing the risk of autogenous shrinkage-introduced cracking. However, the research on hydration model of expansion additive has been hardly researched up to now. This paper presents a study of the hydration model of Ettringite-Gypsum type expansive additive. As a result of comparing forecast values with experiment value, proposed model is shown to expressible of hydration of expansive additive.
