  • This study is devoted to the problems of thermal and autogenous expansion stresses in order to avoid cracking using chemically prestressing method. The chemical prestress can be induced by autogenous expansion characteristics of MgO concrete made in specific burning temperature. The volume change induced cracking has great influence on the long-term durability and serviceability. To evaluate risk of cracking, the computer programs for analysis of thermal and autogenous expansion stresses were developed. In these 3-D finite element procedures, long-term autogenous expansive deformation is modeled and its resultant stress is calculated and then verified by comparison with manual calculation results. In this study, the stress development is related to thermal and autogenous expansive deformation. Using the developed program, residual stresses of MgO concrete were compared and analysed in the example From the numerical results it is found that long-term, and temperature dependent expansive concrete with light-burnt MgO is most effective in controlling the risk of cracking of mass concrete because it has high temperature for long period. The developed analysis program can be efficiently utilized as a useful tool to evaluate the thermal and autogenous expansion stresses in mass concrete structures with lightly burnt MgO.

  • Swelling properties and shear strength behavior of MgO-Sand mixtures with hydration procese of MgO are compared according to different MgO contents (WMgO/WTotal=0, 30, 50, 70, 100%) in this study. The specimens are prepared by mixing with crushed MgO refractory bricks and silica sand. After hydration, the particle size and the specific gravity of MgO were decreases. Through microstructure observation and X-ray diffraction analysis, it is confirmed that MgO changes from the cubic structure of Periclase to the hexagonal cubic structure of Brucite after hydration. As the MgO content increases, both swelling rate and swelling pressure of the mixtures increase. WMgO/WTotal=30% specimen shows relatively low swelling pressure and swelling rate because produced Mg(OH)2 mainly fills the pores between sand particles. However, in the case of MgO more than 50%, swelling pressure and swelling rate increase significantly because Mg(OH)2 fills the pores of sand particles at first and then either pushes out sand particles or Mg(OH)2 particles after filling the pores. As a result of the direct shear test, before hydration, the mixtures show a dilative behavior on high MgO contents and a contractive behavior on low MgO contents. However, after hydration, the behavior of all mixtures changes to contractive behavior. The threshold fraction of fine (i.e., Mg(OH)2) contents of the hydrated MgO-Sand mixtures reveals approximately 60% compared with normalized shear strength.

  • This study is to develop a high quality lightweight foamed concrete that can be applied in the field using EXFG by cracking reducing agent combined with FGD and ALS. First, to increase the volume of foam, the flow and density of the mixture was increased and decreased, respectively. At this time, the effect of substitution ratio of EXFG on fluidity was negligible. The fraction of foam was the highest at EXFG 1%, and the settlement was found to be prevented by the expansion reaction at EXFG 1%. At this time, the ratio of foam was 65%. In the compressive strength, the strengths were similar or decreased when the substitution ratio of EXFG was more than 1%. The apparent density satisfied the KS 0.5 type at the bubble contents was 65%. In case of EXFG substitution, dry shrinkage was decreased by about 10%. As the substitution ratio of EXFG increased, the thermal conductivity increased proportionally.

  • This paper was to discuss the case and cause of debonding defect of wood floor board in apartment house by investigating actual survey. Most frequent defect in wood floor board was debonding of floor board. Scratch, gap and crack of floor board were also found in floor board installment work. Causes of debonding of floor board is shrinkage of cement mortar beneath floor board and expansion of floor board. Haste in floor board work did not provide enough time to dry cement mortar fully, which led to continue to dry after the installment of floor board. It caused moisture movement toward wood floor board. Accordingly, Before floor board work, careful consideration on moisture condition of cement mortar and enough curing time to eliminate the effect of moisture are taken into.

  • The optical properties and dimensional stability of polyethersulfone(PES) retardation film have been studied as function of chain orientation and the temperature applied to PES retardation film. It was confirmed that the appropriate retardation values of $R_e$ and $R_{th}$ for the retardation film application were able to obtain by the chain orientation and these values could be controlled by the chain relaxation through the thermal annealing process. It was found that unstable $R_e$ and $R_{th}$ values were shown by the repeated cooling and heating applied to the retardation films but this could be stabilized by means of the annealing process after stretching of PES film. The dimensional shrinkage due to the chain orientation was found as temperature increase and the intrinsic thermal expansion of PES appeared after shrinking. The shrinkage of PES films affected by the chain orientation and thermal annealing dramatically but the effect on the coefficient of thermal expansion was found to be negligible.

  • Iterative curve evolution techniques are powerful methods for image segmentation. Classical methods proposed curve evolutions which guarantee close contours at convergence and, combined with the level set method, they easily handled curve topology changes. In this paper, we present a new geometric active contour model based on level set methods introduced by Osher & Sethian for detection of object boundaries or shape and we adopt anisotropic diffusion filtering method for removing noise from original image. Classical methods allow only one-way curve evolutions : shrinking or expanding of the curve. Thus, the initial curve must encircle all the objects to be segmented or several curves must be used, each one totally inside one object. But our method allows a two-way curve evolution : parts of the curve evolve in the outward direction while others evolve in the inward direction. It offers much more freedom in the initial curve position than with a classical geodesic search method. Our algorithm performs accurate and precise segmentations from noisy images with complex objects(jncluding sharp angles, deep concavities or holes), Besides it easily handled curve topology changes. In order to minimize the processing time, we use the narrow band method which allows us to perform calculations in the neighborhood of the contour and not in the whole image.

  • The polyacrylate/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) composites were prepared and investigated for the application as a counter electrode in solar cell. The electrical conductivity of the composites was increased with increasing MWNT content and with the thickness of the sheet. The surface resistivity value of the composite at 50 wt% loading of MWNT was 0.36 ${\Omega}$/sq. The thermal decomposition temperature of the composites was also increased with the MWNT contents, and the increase of $15^{\circ}C$ was observed at the composite of polyacrylate/MWNT (50/50, w/w). The increase of storage modulus of the composites was observed, especially at the higher temperature compared to polyacrylate. The dimensional change of polyacrylate decreased over $20^{\circ}C$, but that of the composite increased linearly with the temperature. The morphology of the composites stands for the good dispersion of MWNT into the polyacrylate matrix.

  • In this study, to characterize the application of CSA and dihydrate gypsum Utilizing industrial byproducts, we investigated the characteristics of CSA and dihydrate gypsum to investigate the characteristics of Mine Liner according to the addition amount. As a result of compressive strength, length change and absorption rate of mining lime wastewater according to CSA addition amount, up to 30% of CSA showed a positive effect on shrinkage and absorption reduction effect as well as strength at initial age. However, due to excessive use of CSA 50%, it was reduced by 15% compared to OPC due to increase of absorption rate and decrease of cement amount due to over expansion rather than shrinkage compensation and void filling.

  • Required performance for repair materials are strength, ductility, durability and bonding with the substrate concrete. Various kinds of fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs) have been developed and used as repair materials. Strain-hardening cement based composites (SHCC) is one of the effective repair materials that can be used to improve crack-damage tolerance of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. SHCC is a superior FRCC that has multiple cracking characteristic and pseudo strain-hardening behavior. The expansive admixture, which can be used to reduce shrinkage in SHCC materials with less workability by controlling interfacial bonding performance between SHCC and substrate concrete. For the application of SHCC as a repair material to RC structures, this study investigates the flexural performance of expansive SHCC-layered concrete beam. Test variables include the replacement levels of expansive admixture (0 and 10%), repair thickness (30 and 40 mm), and compressive strength of SHCC (30, 70 and 100 MPa). Four point bending tests on concrete beams strengthened with SHCCs were carried out to evaluate the contribution of SHCC on the flexural capacity. The result suggested that expansive SHCC materials can be used for repairing and strengthening of concrete infrastructures.

  • MgO powder-mixed concrete, expanded at the lower temperature around $850{\sim}1000$ degree celcius, might have long-term expansibility, which could remunerate for the contraction of concrete with delayed expansion, and through the process, the crack resistance of mass concrete might be improved. Currently used expandable concrete additive has three different types : CSA, CaO and MgO. In this study, therefore, such tests as carbonation, chloride diffusivity, freezing-thawing resistance and sulfate resistance after 56 days' curing were implemented and compared the results with the concrete with no MgO mixed to evaluate the durability of 5% MgO-mixed concrete after longer period of time. The degree of hydration for the MgO-mixed cement paste was analyzed after 1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 28 days, and 56 days using SEM, XRD, DSC.
