  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of the waste oyster shell powder as the addition agent in bulking sludge thickening of paper manufacturing plant using DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) and gravitational sedimentation. The effect of parameters such as dosage and size distribution of oyster shell were examined. The results showed that the optimum dosage of mixed oyster shell(size range : $\sim250{\mu}m$) was 0.8 g/L. The oyster shell addition of 5.0 g/L in sedimentation process was increased thickening concentration of 3.25 times. When 5.0 g/L of oyster shell was added in DAF process, water content of sludge was decreased from 95.5% to 82.7% in dewatering process using Buchner funnel test device. When size of oyster shell was divided four ranges($\sim53{\mu}m$, $53\sim106{\mu}m$, $106\sim150{\mu}m$, $150\sim250{\mu}m$), optimum size range for the flotation and dewatering was $53\sim106{\mu}m$.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the proper conditions of calcination and calcium extraction from powdered oyster shell. The physical characteristics such as particle size distribution, surface morphology, and thermal gravity were examined. The following result were obtained. As the powdered oyster shell was ignited in high temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$, the calcination reactions was effectively progressed. The amount of weight loss during calcination would be matched with the generation of carbon dioxide gas. In the calcination of powdered oyster shell, the amount of weight loss increased according to the increased of calcination temperature and the decrease of mean particle size. It was founded that the proper temperature and retention time of calcination was $850^{\circ}C$ and 40 minute. In the extraction of calcium into liquid form using acid addition, the calcination oyster shell was more effective than the non-calcinated shell. The liquid calcium extraction technique using the calcinated oyster shell needed more researches considering cost evaluation.

  • This study is to analyze the application of the oyster shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete. For this purpose, the fundamental experiments of the composed materials and the variations of the main factors on it were considered and then the variations of workability and strength properties of the specimens with each case were also studied. The experimental results on the properties as construction material showed that the use of oyster shells in concrete would not cause abnormal chemical reactions or lead to the formation of any new objects, the workability and strengths decreased with increase in proportion of oyster shells. The compressive strength of concrete with oyster shells is developed as much as that of normal concrete and the grain size of oyster shells is superior on 3.0~5.0mm and the percentage of substitution of them to fine aggregate about 30% from the properties of concrete with them. The relationship equation between compressive strength and tensile strength is ( ).

  • In this study, we investigated phosphate removal efficiency according to pretreatment (pyrolysis temperature, pyrolysis time, particle size) of oyster shells as a basic study for their recycling. And XAFS analysis and isothermal adsorption experiments were performed to investigate the phosphate removal characteristics of oyster shells. As a result, the removal efficiency was good at $600^{\circ}C$ pyrolysis temperature with 6 hour pyrolysis time and 0.355 ~ 0.075 mm particle size. Isothermal adsorption experiments showed that the Langmuir model is suitable for adsorption of oyster shells. XAFS analysis showed that calcium phosphate formed on the oyster shell pyrolyzed at $600^{\circ}C$. In other words, it was confirmed that the formation of calcium phosphate by the calcium ion elution of the oyster shell contributes to the decrease of phosphate concentration.

  • We investigated the mineralogical and chemical characteristics of oyster shell as the possible substitute for the limestone used as an absorbent of $SO_2$ gas. The oyster shells from Taean and Tongyeong were used for the comparison with limestone and those from Boyreong and Yeosu were additionally investigated. XRD results show that all shells are composed of calcite with the exception of the myostracum layer attached to adductor muscle and ligament, which is composed of aragonite. The marine sediments as impurities exist on the surface of shells or as inclusions in the shells. Calcite is the main mineral composition of the shell of barnacle which is also one of the impurities. The oyster shell is composed of three main layers; prismatic, foliated, and chalk. The oyster shell from Tongyeong with the largest shell size, has the smallest thickness of prismatic and foliated layers which contain protein called conchiolin, whereas that from Taean with the smallest shell size has the largest prismatic and foliated layers. The sizes of those two layers of the shells from Boryeong and Yeosu are larger than that from Tongyeong but smaller than Taean. Those differences are supposed to be due to the different growth environments because the oysters from Tongyeong are cultured under the sea while those from Taean are in the tidal zone. The oyster shells generally show higher amount of sulfur and phosphorus than limestone, mainly due to the composition of protein. Some elements such as Mg show significant variations in different layers. As for trace elements, Li shows much higher amount in oyster shells than limestone, suggesting the influence of the composition of the sea water on the formation of the oyster shells.

  • This is an experimental study on the properties and the strength development of concrete using of the oyster shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete. For this purpose, the fundamental experiments of the materials and the main factors on it were considered and then the workability and many kinds of strength about the specimens were also studied. As the experimental results, there were strength differences of less than 10% between concrete with oyster shells and normal and the most excellent grain size of oyster shells is 5.0mm and less with taking uniformly and the percentage of practicable substitution of them to fine aggregate about 30%. This paper also represents the relationship equations among many kinds of strength and elastic modulus of concrete with the oyster shells decreased with increase in proportion of oyster shells and curve of it is similar about the percentage of substitution of 10%.

  • Boring caracteristics, boring rate, and predation, rates on the valves of the seed and adult clams of Meretrix petechialis by Glossaulax didyma didyma in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor rearing aquarium were investigated by various morphometric data. The investigations were carried out from June to September, 2007. The morphology of drilled holes on the valves of M. petechialis showed the crater type as seen in the spats of Ruditapes philippinarum and M. lusoria. The sizes of the outer diameters of holes were greater than the inner diameters of the holes on the valves of M. petechialis in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. On the whole, the sizes of the holes on the valves of the seeds of M. petechialis was smaller than those bored holes on the adult valves. The location of the bored holes on the valves of the seeds varied widely with the the sizes of the individuals of M. petichialis, while most of holes on the valves of adult clams were located near the umbo position of the valves of the clams in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor aquarium at the laboratory. On the whole, the outer and inner diameters of the bored holes increased with increase of shell lengths of the clams in the shellfish aquafarm and the indoor rearing aquarium at the laboratory. The authors could confirm experimentally the boring snail, G. didyma didyma, drilled the seeds and adult clams of M. petechialis. In the experiments for 15 days (three times repeated) in the indoor rearing aquarium at the laboratory, the mortality of dead shells to total shells of M. petechialis by boring snail Glossaulax didyma didyma was totally average 41.5%, and percent of drilled shells to total dead shells of clams by the boring snail was average 47.1%. Of total shells, percent of drilled shells to total shells of clams by the boring snail was totally average 19.3%. Predation of G. didyma didyma were greater at night than the day time. Average 0.5 seed and adult individuals of M. petewchialis were consumed per G. didyma didyma, per day. Predation varied with shell lengths of M. petechialis and shell widths of G. didyma didyma.

  • In this study, we secured wasted oyster shells as raw materials in order to applicate it to corrosion preventive ceramic coating reagent in the drinking water pipeline. Then, we investigated physicochemical properties in terms of basic calcination processing. Oyster shell was composed with 92.08% of $CaCO_3$ and the shapes of the pulverized particles were mostly oval. The calcined oyster shell showed increasing tendency of weight loss and of calcium content with the lapse of time and increase of temperature. The result indicates that the higher calcination processing temperature and the uniformly smaller particle size give more efficiency during calcination process. Therefore it is anticipated to be a good ceramic material to protect a surface of cleaning bed and inside of a tap water pipes from corrosion.
