  • For several decades, many researchers have been involved in developing recycling methods for FRP boats. There are four basic classes of recycling covered in the literature. Despite of environmental problems(safety hazards), mechanical recycling of FRP boats, which involves shredding and grinding of the scrap FRP, is one of the simpler and more technically proven methods than incineration, reclamation or chemical ones. Because FRP is made up of reinforced fiber glass, it is very difficult to break into pieces. It also leads to secondary problem in recycling process, such as air pollution and unacceptable shredding noise level. Another serious problem of mechanical FRP recycling is very limited reusable applications for the residue. This study is to propose a new and efficient method which is more wide range applications and environment friendly waste FRP regenerating system. New system is added with the cyclone sorting machine for airborne pollutions and modified cutting system for several glass fiber chips sizes. It also has shown the FRP chip fiber-reinforced concrete and fiber-reinforced secondary concrete applications with the waste FRP boat to be more eligible than existing recycling method.

  • As an alternative to conventional explosive methods for demolition of concrete structures and rocks, the use of non-explosive demolition agents can be considered to reduce noise, vibration, and dust emissions during the demolition process. In this study, we conduct finite element analysis for crack initiation and propagation caused by the expansion of non-explosive demolition agents in square concrete structures. The predicted crack patterns are compared with the experimental results in the literature. The minimum values of the required expansion pressure of non-explosive demolition agents are also estimated, which depend upon the arrangement of non-explosive demolition agents and empty holes. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of empty holes on the fragmentation of concrete structures, and discuss the effective arrangement of non-explosive demolition agents and empty holes for fragmentation improvement.

  • A large amount of waste copper slag containing about 35 ~ 45% iron has been generated and discarded every year from pyrometallurgical processes for producing copper from copper concentrate. Thus, recovery of iron from the waste copper slag is of great interest for comprehensive use of mineral resource and reduction of environment problems. In this study, a physico-chemical separation process for upgrading iron from the waste copper slag discharged as an industrial waste has been developed. The process first crushes the waste copper slag below 1 mm (first crushing step), followed by carbon reduction at $1225^{\circ}C$ for 90 min (carbon reduction step). And then, resulting material is again crushed to $-104{\mu}m$ (second crushing step), followed by wet magnetic separation (wet magnetic separation step). Using the developed process, a magnetic product containing more than 66 wt.% iron was obtained from the magnetic separation under a magnetic field strength of 0.2 T for the waste copper slag treated by the reduction reaction. At the same conditions, the percentage recovery of iron was over 72%. The iron rich magnetic product obtained should be used as a iron resource for making pig iron.

  • Since the rock fragmentation by blasting can affect the subsequent processes including loading, hauling and secondary crushing, its control is essential for the assessment of blasting efficiency as well as production cost. In this study, we were analyzed the rock fragmentation by the direction of artificial joint. The underground blasting experiments were performed after forming the vertical and horizontal artificial joints. The blast fragmentation was conducted by the split-desktop which is a 2D image processing program. As a result, it was found that the horizontal artificial joint was evaluated to have lower overall the size of muck pile than the vertical artificial joint and the distribution of the size of muck pile was varied. It is possible that the direction of artificial joint could suppress the occur of oversize muck pile and control to a certain size or less.

  • This study investigated the recovery of metallic aluminium in the black dross generated from used beverage can recycling process with crushing mechanism such as compression and impact. The as-received Al black dross had a spherical shape, and its size was about 10~40 mm. Also, The X-ray diffraction pattern showed that the main contents of black dross are composed of halite (NaCl), sylvite (KCl), spinel ($MgAl_2O_4$) and corundum ($Al_2O_3$). A metallic aluminium recovery test was performed using jaw crusher and hammer mill having different crushing mechanism. It was analysed that Jaw crushing process can separate into metallic aluminium and non metallic constituents. However, hammer milling process shows significant difference on the separation results. It was found that jaw crushing process was effective for recovery of metallic aluminium in the black dross than that of hammer milling process.

  • The use of lithium-ion batteries increases significantly with the rapid spread of electronic devices and electric vehicle and thereby an increase in the amount of waste batteries is expected in the near future. Therefore, studies are continuously being conducted to recover various resources of cathode active material (Ni, Co, Mn, Li) from waste battery. In order to recover the cathode active material, black mass is generally recovered from waste battery. The general process of recovering black mass is a waste battery collection - discharge - dismantling - crushing - classification process. This study focus on the crushing/classification process among the processes. Specifically, the particle size distribution of various samples at each crushing/classification step were evaluated, and the particle shape of each particle fraction was analyzed with a microscope and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)-EDS(Energy Dispersive Spectrometer). As a result, among the black mass particle, fine particle less than 74 ㎛ was the mixture of cathode and anode active material which are properly liberated from the current metals. However, coarse particle larger than 100 ㎛ was present in a form in which the current metal and active material were combined. In addition, this study developed a PBM(Population Balance Model) system that can simulate two-species mixture sample with two different crushing properties. Using developed model, the breakage parameters of two species was derived and predictive performance of breakage distribution was verified.

  • Frangible bullets, which are shredded after impact on a target, reduce the possibility of both ricochet and unexpected injury in shooting training and in mission acts in dams, nuclear power plants, and cultural properties. Reducing the levels of hazardous materials in shooting ranges, such as lead, has become an important agenda for the government and environmental groups. In this study, the shape of a frangible bullet was designed for efficient shredding, and the safety and reliability were confirmed by actual firing under different process conditions. In addition, the physical characteristics, such as compaction pressure, density, and frangibility of each process, were compared by analyzing the microstructure of the sintered frangible bullet. The experiment revealed the smallest fragmentation after impact on the target under the following conditions: Cu-Sn 85:15; sintering temperature, 600℃; sintering time, one hour. Further development of the process conditions and experimental methods will contribute to the performance and environmental improvement of a frangible bullet.

  • To avoid the intrinsic problem of aggregation associated with the traditional solution-phase refolding process, we propose a solid-phase refolding method integrated with expanded bed adsorption chromatography. The model protein used was a fusion protein of recombinant human growth hormone and a glutathione S transferase fragment. It was demonstrated that the EBA-mediated refolding technique could simultaneously remove cellular debris and directly renature the fusion protein inclusion bodies in the cell homogenate with much higher yields and less agregation. To demonstrate the applicability of the method, we successfully tested the three representative types of starting materials, i. e., rhGH monomer, washed inclusion bodies, and the E. coli homogenate. This direct and simplified refolding process could also reduce the number of renaturation steps required and allow refolding at a higher concentration, at approximately 2 mg fusion protein per ml of resin. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first approach that has combined the solid-phase refolding method with expanded bed chromatography.
