  • Wave energy distribution along the Korean coastal sea area was analysed based on the calculated wave data at KORDI. The wave data for the analysis is for the last 24 years (1979∼2002) and the model is HYPA and WAM using known wind field. The wave energy or wave power was evaluated based on the linear wave theory with a simple wave period assumption. The results shed some idea on the amount of usable wave energy and the sites of higher efficiency. It is fair to say that 3kw/m wave energy is easily observable and 10kw/m is frequently available depending on the season and location. The south west region of Jeju island is believed to have the highest overall wave energy density.

  • In the wave spectrum distribution based on linear wave theory, the appearance of a giant wave whose wave height reaches to 30m has been considered next to almost impossible in a real sea However since more than 10 giant waves were observed in a recent investigation of global wave distribution which was carried out by the analysis of SAR imagines for three weeks, the existence of the giant waves is being recognized and it is considered the cause of many unknown marine disasters. The change of wave height distribution concerning a formation of wave train, nonlinear wave to wave interaction and so on were raised as the causes of the appearance of the giant waves, but the occurrence mechanism of the giant waves hasn't been cleared yet. In present study, we investigated appearance circumstances of the giant waves in real sea and its occurrence mechanism was analyzed based on linear and nonlinear wave focusing theories. Also, through a development of numerical model of the nonlinear $schr\"{o}dinger$ equation, the formations of the giant wave from progressive wave train were reproduced.

  • As the first step to investigate the nonlinear interactions between turbulence and marine structures inside a viscous NWT, a LES technique was applied to solve the turbulent channel flow for =150. The employed turbulence models included 4 types: the Smagorinsky model, the Dynamic SGS model, the Structure Function model, and the Generalized Normal Stress model. The simulated data in time-series for the LESs were averaged in both time and space, and statistical analyses were performed. The results of the LESs were compared with those of a DNS, developed in the present study and two spectral methods by Yoon et al.(2003) and Kim et a1.(1987). Based on this research, the accuracy of LESs has been found to be still related to the number of grids for fine grid size).

  • The time simulation of slow drift motions of moored FPSO in waves is presented. The equation of motion based on Cummin's theory of impulse responses are employed, and are consisted of horizontal plane motions such as surge, sway and yaw. The added mass, wave damping coefficients, first order wave exciting forces and the second order wave drift forces involved in the equations are obtained from three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The mooring lines are modeled as quasi-static catenary cable. As a numerical example, time domain analyses are carried out for a box-type FPSO in long crest irregular wave condition.

  • Wave distribution in Jangjeon Harbour is numerically simulated for an optimum design of the harbour facilities. A deep-water design wave is estimated based on stochastic extreme wave analysis of wind data in the vicinity of the harbour, and it is applied to the boundary condition at open sea. Boussinesq wave theory that includes effects of frequency dispersion and nonlinearity is employed for the wave simulation. The porosity and sponge layer are adapted at beach to depict partial reflection and complete absorption of waves, respectively. The design wave for breakwater is computed in global domain with coarse grids and the wave distribution inside of wharf is simulated in local domain with fine grids.

  • Our aim was to simulate ocean waves in a small-size wave flume and observe the motion of a cylindrical floating body placed in an offshore environment. To precisely visualize the oscillation of the body, a set of light-emitting diode illuminators and high-speed charge-coupled device camera were installed in the flume. Spectral analysis was performed of the movement of the floating body. The wave generator and absorbers worked well to simulate stable regular waves. As the period of the oncoming waves changed, the movement of the floating body substantially differed when tethered to a tension-leg mooring cable. In particular, when connected to the tension-leg mooring cable, the natural frequency of the floating body suddenly appeared at 0.391 Hz as the wave period was increased.

  • Wave power distribution is investigated to determine the optimal sites for wave power generation at Jeju sea which has the highest wave energy density in the Korean coastal waters. The spatial and seasonal variation of wave power per unit length is calculated in the Jeju sea area based on the monthly mean wave data from 1979 to 2002 which is produced by the SWAN wave model simulation in prior research. The selected favorable locations for wave power generation are compared in terms of magnitude of wave energy density and distribution characteristics of wave parameters. The results suggest that Chagui-Do is the most optimal site for wave power generation in the Jeju sea. The seasonal distribution of wave energy density reveals that the highest wave energy density occurs in the northwest sea in the winter and it is dominated by wind waves, while the second highest one happens at south sea in the summer and it is dominated by a swell sea. The annual average of wave energy density shows that it gradually increases from east to west of the Jeju sea. At Chagui-Do, the energy density of the sea swell sea is relatively uniform while the energy density of the wind waves is variable and strong in the winter.
