The stress triaxiality and lode angle are known to be most dominant fracture parameters in ductile materials. This paper proposes a three-dimensional failure strain surface for a ductile steel, called a low-temperature high-tensile steel (EH36), using average stress triaxiality and average normalized lode parameter, along with briefly introducing their theoretical background. It is an extension of previous works by Choung et al. (2011; 2012; 2014a; 2014b) and Choung and Nam (2013), in which a two-dimensional failure strain locus was presented. A series of tests for specially designed specimens that were expected to fail in the shear mode, shear-tension mode, and compression mode was conducted to develop a three-dimensional fracture surface covering wide ranges for the two parameters. This paper discusses the test procedures for three different tests in detail. The tensile force versus stroke data are presented as the results of these tests and will be used for the verification of numerical simulations and fracture identifications in Part II.
This is the fifth in a series of companion papers dealing with the dynamic hardening properties of various marine structural steels at intermediate strain rates. Five steps of strain rate levels (0.001, 1, 10, 100, 200/s) and three steps of temperature levels (LT ($-40^{\circ}C$), RT, and HT ($200^{\circ}C$)) were taken into account for the dynamic tensile tests of three types of marine structural steels: API 2W50 and Classifications EH36 and DH36. The total number of specimens was 180 pieces. It was seen that the effects of dynamic hardening became clearer at LT than at RT. Dynamic strain aging accompanying serrated flow stress curves was also observed from high temperature tests for all kinds of steels. The dynamic hardening factors (DHFs) at the two temperature levels of LT and RT were derived at the three plastic strain levels of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 from dynamic tensile tests. Meanwhile, no DHFs were found for the high temperature tests because a slight negative strain rate dependency due to dynamic strain aging had occurred. A new formulation to determine material constant D in a Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation is provided as a function of the plastic strain rate, as well as the plastic strain level. The proposed formula is verified by comparing with test flow stress curves, not only at intermediate strain rate ranges but also at high strain rate ranges.

For many years, high-strength nickel-base superalloys have been used to manufacture turbine blades because of their excellent performance at high temperatures. The prediction of fatigue life of superalloys is important for improving the efficiency of the turbine blades. In this study, low cycle fatigue tests are performed for different values of total strain and temperature. The relations between strain energy density and number of cycles before failure occurs are examined in order to predict the low cycle fatigue life of IN738LC super alloy. The results of low cycle fatigue lives predicted by strain energy methods are found to coincide with experimental data and with the results obtained by the Coffin-Manson method.

The Ni-base super-heat-resistant alloy, GTD-111, is employed in gas turbines because of its high temperature strength and oxidation resistance. It is important to predict the fatigue life of this superalloy in order to improve the efficiency of gas turbines. In this study, low-cycle fatigue tests are performed as variables of total strain range and temperature. The relationship between the strain energy density and number of cycles to failure is examined in order to predict the low-cycle fatigue life of the GTD-111 superalloy. The fatigue life predicted by using the strain-energy methods is found to coincide with that obtained from the experimental data and from the Coffin-Manson method.
Recently, fiber-reinforced plastic(FRP) wraps are blown as an effective material for the enhancement and rehabilitation of aged concrete structures. The purpose of this investigation is to experimentally investigate behavior of concrete cylinder wrapped with FRP materials. Experimental parameters include compressive strength of concrete cylinder, FRP material, and confinement ratio. This paper presents the results of experimental studies on the performance of concrete cylinder specimens externally wrapped with aramid, carbon and glass fiber reinforced Polymer sheets. Test specimens were loaded in uniaxial compression. Axial load, axial and lateral strains were investigated to evaluate the stress-strain behavior, ultimate strength ultimate strain etc. Test results showed that the concrete strength and confinement ratio, defined as the ratio of transverse confinement stress and transverse strain were the most influential factors affecting the stress-strain behavior of confined concrete. More FRP layers showed the better confinement by increasing the compressive strength of test cylinders. In case of test cylinders with higher compressive strength, FRP wraps increased the compressive strength but decreased the compressive sham of concrete test cylinders, that resulted in prominent brittle failure mode. The failure of confined concrete was induced by the rupture of FRP material at the stain, being much smaller than the ultimate strain of FRP material.
This study describes the basic concept and the applicability of Hybrid Reinforcement System using conventional steel reinforcing bars and Fiber Reinforced Polymer bars. The concrete bridge decks are assumed to be supported by beams and reinforced with two layers of reinforcing bars. In concrete bridge deck using HRS, the top tensile force for negative moment zone on beam supports is assumed to be resisted by FRP reinforcing bars, and the bottom tensile force for positive moment zone in the middle of hem supports is assumed to be resisted by conventional steel reinforcing bars, respectively. The FRP reinforcing bars are non-corrosive. Thus, the steel reinforcement is as far away as possible from the top surface of the deck and protected from intrusion of corrosive agent. HRS concrete bridge deck has sufficient ductility at ultimate state as the following reasons; 1) FRP bars have lower elastic modulus and higher ultimate strain than steel re-bars have, 2) FRP bars have lower ultimate strain if provided higher reinforcement ratio, 3) ultimate strain of FRP bars can be reduced if FRP bars are unbonded. Test results showed that FRP and HRS concrete slabs are not failed by FRP bar rupture, but failed by concrete compression in the range of ordinary reinforcement ratio. Therefore, in continuous concrete bridge deck using HRS, steel reinforcing bars for positive moment yield and form plastic hinge first and compressive concrete fail in the bottom of supports or in the top of the middle of supports last. Thus, bridge deck consumes significant inelastic strain energy before its failure.

Dynamic compressive material properties at high strain rates is essential for improving the reliability of finite element analysis in dynamic environments, such as high-speed collisions and high-speed forming. In general, the dynamic compressive material properties for high strain rates can be obtained through SHPB equipment. In this study, SHPB equipment was used to acquire the dynamic compressive material properties to cope with the collision analysis of Woven tpye CFRP material, which is being recently applied to unmanned aerial vehicles. It is also used as a pulse shaper to secure a constant strain rate for materials with elastic-brittle properties and to improve the reliability of experimental data. In the case of CFRP material, since the anisotropic material has different mechanical properties for each direction, experiments were carried out by fabricating thickness and in-plane specimens. As a result of the SHPB test, in-plane specimens had difficulty in securing data reproducibility and reliability due to fracture of the specimens before reaching a constant strain rate region, whereas in the thickness specimens, the stress consistency of the specimens was excellent. The data reliability is high and a constant strain rate range can be obtained. Through finite element analysis using LS-dyna, it was confirmed that the data measured from the pressure rod were excessively predicted by the deformation of the specimen and the pressure rod.
In the present study, we examined the influence of prestrain on creep strength of Class M alloy(STS310S) and Class A(STS310J1TB) alloys containing precipitates. Prestrain was given by prior creep at a higher stress than the following creep stresses. Creep behaviour before and after stress change and creep rate of pre-strained specimens were compared with that of virgin specimens. Pre-straining produced the strain region where the strain rate was lower than that of a virgin specimen both for STS310J1TB and STS310S steels. The reason for this phenomenon was ascribable to the viscous motion of dislocations, the interaction between dislocations and precipitates in a STS310J1TB steel, and the interaction of dislocations with sub-boundaries in a STS310S steen which has the higher dislocation density and smaller subgrain size resulted from pre-straining at higher stress.

This paper first reviews the physical meanings and the expressions of two representative strain rate models: CSM (Cowper-Symonds Model) and JCM (Johnson-Cook Model). Since it is known that the CSM and the JCM are suitable for low-intermediate and intermediate-high rate ranges, many studies regarding marine accidents such as ship collision/grounding and explosion in FPSO have employed the CSM. A formula to predict the material constant of the CSM is introduced from literature survey. Numerical simulations with two different material constitutive equations, classical metal plasticity model based on von Mises yield function and micromechanical porous plasticity model based on Gurson yield function, have been carried out for the stiffened plates under impact loading. Simulation results coincide with experimental results better when using the porous plasticity model.

Through-the-thickness properties of thick-walled cylindrical composites are required to determine structural performances because interlaminar tensile stress is primarily responsible for structural failure of the composites during their curing process. It is necessary for evaluating the tensile properties to find individual test methods to find appropriate methods because there are no recognised international standards(test methods and test specifications) available for generating reliable tensile properties in the direction. This paper has performed an experimental Study to measure that properties of carbon fabric/phenolic composites are produced by domestic company. Several test methods using an aluminum specimen were compared and evaluated. The best method, found out, was adopted to measure transverse through-the-thickness properties of composite materials. The results show that strain trends on four faces of composite specimen are the same.
