Impact Modification Effects of SEBS-g-MA on Polyamide 6/Maleated Polypropylene Blends (폴리아미드6/반응성 포리프로필렌 블렌드계에서 SEBS-g-MA의 충격개선효과)

  • Melt blend of PA6/PP-g-MA system containing SEBS-g-MA as a compatible impact modifier was prepared to investigate the change of mechanical properties and morphologies. The tensile strength slightly decreased, but the elongation at break increased with increasing content of SEBS-g-MA in the blend. Also the notched izod impact strength increased with increasing the content of PP-g-MA and SEBS-g-MA. It is attributed to improved compatibilization and interfacial adhesion by reaction of the amide of PA6 with maleic anhydride of SEBS-g-MA and PP-g-MA. The result of dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) showed a typical behavior of the compatibilization in the polymer blends. Finally, in the phase structure observed by the use of SEM, we confirmed improvement of the compatibilization and interfacial adhesion with increasing the content of SEBS-g-MA and PP-g-MA.

  • Concrete structures become more common in railway systems with an advancement of high speed train technologies. As the service life of concrete structures increases, structural strengthening for concrete structures may be necessary. There are several typical strengthening techniques using steel plate and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, which have their own inherent shortcomings. In order to enhance greater durability and resistance to fire and other environmental attacks, basalt fiber material attracts engineer's attention due to its characteristics. This study investigates bonding performance of basalt fiber sheet as a structural strengthening material. Experimental variables include bond width, length and number of layer. From the bonding tests, there were three different types of bonding failure modes: debonding, rupture and rip-off. Among the variables, bond width indicated more significant effect on bonding characteristics. In addition the bond length did not contribute to bond strength in proportion to the bond length. Hence this study evaluated effective bond length and effective bond strength. The effective bond strength was compared to those suggested by other researches which used different types of FRP strengthening materials such as carbon FRP.

Effect of Kenaf Fiber Loading on the Properties of Natural Fiber/Natural Rubber Composites (천연섬유/천연고무 복합재료의 특성에 미치는 Kenaf 섬유함량의 영향)

  • Natural fiber/natural rubber composites were fabricated by uniformly compounding natural rubber and cellulose- based natural fiber kenaf and then by compression molding. The effect of kenaf fiber content on their vulcanization behavior, hardness, tensile properties, tear strength and static and dynamic properties was investigated. The contents of kenaf fiber in the composites were 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr, compared to natural rubber and additives. The result indicated that various properties of natural rubber depended on the kenaf fiber content. With increasing kenaf fiber content, the torque for vulcanization of natural rubber was increased whereas the vulcanization time was reduced as well. The hardness, tensile modulus and tear strength of kenaf/natural rubber composites were gradually decreased with the fiber content whereas the tensile strength and elongation at break were decreased. Also, with increasing the kenaf fiber content the dynamic property of natural rubber was changed more greatly than the static property. The loss factor, which is closely related with the damping or absorption of the energy given to natural rubber, was proportionally increased with the fiber content.

  • This paper discusses the problems in application of a parallel wire strand with high performance steel wires, which have the tensile strength of 1960 MPa grade, as a major component of the main cables in suspension bridges. Construction methods of main cables in suspension bridges are briefly reviewed by comparing the pros and cons of available methods. Required items for performance and quality of parallel wire strands are described based on the established references. Ultimate tensile strength tests are carried out for seven specimens in order to analyze the behavior of high-performance parallel wire strands. The test results demonstrate that the properties of test specimens are satisfied with performance indexes specified in this paper. The high-performance parallel wire strands are acceptable for application in main cables of suspension bridges.

Detection and Evaluation of Microdamages in Composite Materials Using a Thermo-Acoustic Emission Technique (열-음향방출기법을 이용한 복합재료의 미세손상 검출 및 평가)

  • Utilizing a thermo-acoustic emission (AE) technique, a study on detection and evaluation of microfractures in cross-ply laminate composites was performed. Fiber breakages and matrix fractures formed by a cryogenic cooling at $-191^{\circ}C$ were observed with ultrasonic C-scan, optical and scanning electron microscopy. Those microfractures were monitored in a non-destructive in-situ state as three different types of thermo-AE signals classified on the basis of Fast-Fourier Transform and Short-Time Fourier Transform. Thus, it was concluded that real-time estimation of microfracture processes being formed during cryogenic cooling could be accomplished by monitoring such different types of thermo-AEs in each time-stage and then by analyzing thermo-AE behaviors for the respective AE types on the basis of the AE signal analysis results obtained during thermal heating and cooling load cycles.

Thermal Properties and Fracture Toughness of Bisphenol-Based DGEBA/DGEBS Epoxy Blend System (Bisphenol계 DGEBA/DGEBS 에폭시 블렌드 시스템의 열적 특성 및 파괴인성)

  • In this study, the bisphenol-based DGEBA/GEBS blend systems were studied in cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, and fracture toughness of the casting specimen. The content of DGEBA/DCEBS was varied in 100 : 0, 90 : 10, 80 : 20, 70 : 30, and 60 : 40 wt%. The cure activation energies ($E_a$) of the blend systems were determined by Ozawa's equation. The thermal stabilities, including initial decomposed temperature (IDT), temperatures of maximum rate of degradation ($T_{max}$), and integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) of the cured specimen were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). For the mechanical interfacial properties of the specimens, the critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$) test was performed and their fractured surfaces were examined by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, $E_a$, IPDT, and $K_{IC}$ show maximum values in the 20 wt% DGEBS content compared with the neat DGEBA resins. This was probably due to the fact that the elevated networks were farmed by the introduction of sulfonyl groups of the DCEBS resin.

Finite Element Analysis of Pipe Whip Restraint Behavior Under Jet Thrust Forces (유체 분사 추진력을 받는 배관 휩 구속장치 거동에 관한 유한요소해석)

  • Many types of pipe whip restraints are installed to protect the structural components from the anticipated pipe whip phenomena of high energy lines in nuclear power plants. It is necessary to investigate these phenomena accurately in order to design the pipe whip restraints properly and/or to evaluate the acceptability of the pipe whip restraint design. Various research programs have been conducted in many countries to develop analytical methods and to verify the validity of the methods. In this study, various types of finite elements in ANSYS[1], the general purpose finite element computer program, was used to simulate the postulated pipe whips to obtain impact loads and the calculated results were compared with the specific experimental results from the sample pipe whip test for the U-shaped pipe whip restraints. Some calculational models, having the gap element or the spring element between the pipe whip restraint and the pipe line, give reasonably good transient responses of the restraint forces compared with the experimental results, and could be useful in evaluating the acceptability of the pipe whip restraint design.

Assessments of Creep Properties of Strip Type fiber Reinforcement (띠형 섬유보강재의 크리프 특성 평가)

  • Geosynthetic reinforced earth wall was introduced about 20 years ago and many structures have been constructed. Especially, segmental concrete panel facing and friction tie system are the most popular system in Korea, and this friction tie was composed of high tenacity PET filament and LDPE(Low Density Polyethylene) sheath. Due to the lack of direct-test results, design coefficients of friction tie (creep reduction factor) had been determined by quoting the previous and the foreign reference data. This is an unreasonable fact for the use of friction ties. In this study, the creep tests were performed to evaluate the creep behavior of friction tie, and the reduction factor of creep was calculated for the correct design of geosynthetic reinforced earth retaining walls. From the test results, finally it was found that the allowable creep strength of friction tie is 60% of Tult during service life, and creep reduction factor is 1.67 for each grade of friction ties.

A Study on the Creep Deformation Behavior of Mg-Zn-Mn-(Ca) Alloys (Mg-Zn-Mn-(Ca)합금의 크리이프 변형거동에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, creep tests of Mg-Zn-Mn and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloys, which were casted by mold with Mg-3%Zn-1%Mn and Mg-3%Zn-1%Mn-0.2%Ca, were done under the temperature range of 473-573K and the stress range of 23.42-78.00Mpa. The activation energies and the stress exponents were measured to investigate the creep plastic deformation of those alloys, and the rupture lifes of Mg-Zn-Mn alloy were also measured to investigate the fracture behavior. From the results, the activation energy of Mg-Zn-Mn and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloys under the temperature range of 473-493K were measured as 149.87, 145.98KJ/mol, respectively, and the stress exponent were measured as 5.13, 6.06 respectively. Also the activation energies Mg-Zn-Mn and Mg-Zn-Mn-Ca alloys under the temperature range of 553-573K were obtained as 134.41, 129.22KJ/mol, respectively, and tress exponent were obtained as 3.48, 4.63, respectively. Finally stress dependence of rupture life and the activation energy of rupture life of Mg-Zn-Mn under the temperature range of 473-493K was measured as 8.05, 170.0(KJ/mol), respectively, which were a little higher than the results of steady state creep.

A Study on the Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior in F.F. Shaft Materials of Vehicle with Small Circular Defect at Variable Temperature (미소원공결함을 갖는 자동차 전류구동축재의 온도변화에 따른 피로크랙전파거동에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with two kinds of material, S43C and S50C, using in the Front engine and Front drive wheels(F.F.) of vehicle. The one part of specimens was heated by high frequency induction method(about 1mm depth and $H_RC$ 56~60) and tested environment temperature were $-30^{\circ}C$, $+25^{\circ}C$ and $+80^{\circ}C$ in order to look over the influence of the heat treatment and the temperatures. In the experimented result at $+25^{\circ}C$ and $+80^{\circ}C$, the fatigue life of non-heated specimens were decreased about 35%, but that of heated specimens were decreased about only 5% at $+80^{\circ}C$ more than at $25^{\circ}C$. And in the experiment result at $-30^{\circ}C$ and $+25^{\circ}C$, the non-heated and heated specimens were about 110%, 120% higher fatigue life at $-30^{\circ}C$ than at the $+25^{\circ}C$ each other. On the other hand, the fatigue crack propagation rate of S50C was higher than that of S43C.
