  • This paper provides approximate J estimates for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks in cylinders under bending. The proposed method is based on the reference stress approach, where the dependence of elastic and plastic influence functions of J on the cylinder/crack geometry, the off-centred angle and strain hardening is minimised through the use of a proper normalising load. Based on published limited FE results for off-centred, circumferential through-wall cracks under bending, such normalising load is found, based on which the reference stress based J estimates are proposed for more general cases, such as for a different cylinder geometry. Comparison of the estimated J with extensive FE J results shows overall good agreements for different crack/cylinder geometries which provides sufficient confidence in the use of the proposed method to fracture mechanics analyses of off-centred circumferential cracks. Furthermore, the proposed method is simple to use, giving significant merits in practice.

  • In order to evaluate the integrity of nuclear power plant components, the analysis based on fracture mechanics is crucial. For this purpose, finite element method is popularly used to obtain J-integral. However, it is time consuming to design the finite element model of a cracked structure. Also, the J-integral should be verified by alternative methods since it may differ depending on the calculation method. The objective of this paper is to develop a three-dimensional elastic-plastic J-integral analysis system which is named as EPAS program. The EPAS program consists of an automatic mesh generator for a through-wall crack and a surface crack, a solver based on ABAQUS program, and a J-integral calculation program which provides DI (Domain Integral) and EDI (Equivalent Domain Integral) based J-integral calculation. Using the EPAS program, an optimized finite element model for a cracked structure can be generated and corresponding J-integral can be obtained subsequently.

  • A method of prediction for the fatigue life of surface crack, that is, initial cracks grow and penetrate through the thickness, was presented in the previous study of the authors. Effects of parameters such as the initial crack depth, material factors, etc., for the life were also discussed. However, in the case of adapting the concept of LBB(Leak Before Break), the break fatigue life after the penetration of the thickness must be taken into account. Hence, a method to predict the break fatigue life is presented in this paper. Effects of the parameters for the break fatigue life are discussed and compared with the penetration fatigue life.

  • Under unlubricated condition, the friction and wear tests of silicon nitride and zirconia manufactured by HIP were carried out at room temperature. The wear resistance of silicon nitride was superior to that of zirconia under low load, whereas the wear resistance of zirconia was superior to that of silicon nitride under high load. Wear model of ceramic was suggested by the microscopic SEM observation of worn surfaces and debris. Theoretical analysis and discussions based on linear fracture mechanics were made out about this ceramic wear model. From the theoretical analysis, a new nondimensional parameter, Scf, was introduced to estimate wear rate of ceramics. This new nondimentional parameter consists of contact pressure, surface defect of contact material, frictional coefficient and fracture toughness.

  • This paper describes a study of fillet welded joint stressed perpendicular to the weld line. The finite element method was used to determine the stress intensity factor for cruciform joint at weld toe and root cracks according to variation of H/Tp, weld angle and main plate thickness. But, in this study, weld angle was fixed at 45.deg., since the variation of weld angle affect the stress intensity factor little, also main plate thickness was fixed. Pulsating tension fatigue test was done at the second phase of experiment. The work using the concepts of the fracture mechanics on the stable crack growth, was in the correlation of the experimental fatigue stress-life behavior because the fatigue behaviors of various joint geometries are related to the stress intensity factors calculated by F.E.M. analysis. Main results obtained are summarized as follows. 1) According to the propagation of toe crack, the variation of the stress intensity factor at root crack is obvious as H/Tp is smaller. 2) According to the propagation of root cracks, the change of the stress intensity factor of the toe is very large with propagation of root crack. 3) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor of crack propagation at the root crack was obtained. 4) The calculation formula of the stress intensity factor at the toe cracks was obtained in similar manner. 5) From the results of experiment, the velocity of fatigue crack propagation at the weld toe and root was estimated.

  • A practically useful system for elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis has been developed. The developed system is comprised of the deformation plasticity failure assessment diagram(DPFAD) approach and the J-integral/Tearing modulus(J/T) approach. The system contains analysis routines for five types of fracture specimens : compact tension, center cracked tension, single edge craked plate in uniform tension, single edge cracked plate in three point bending and double edge cracked plate in tension. A double interpolation scheme was adopted to interpolate J values from the EPRI developed EPFM handbook and the Newton-Raphson method was used to obtain proper loadings for displacement control conditions. A graphic output system was utilized to present numerical results. Several case studies were performed to evaluate the accuracy and the usefulness of the code. It was found that the J/T approach and the DPFAD approach yielded similar results. However, the DPFAD approach is more convenient for qick assessment of integrity of cracked structures while the J/T approach is more useful in evaluating the full history of the fracture process.

  • Microcracking of type 304 stainless steel at $593^{\circ}C(1,100^{\circ}F)$ has been studied, in particular, initiation, growth, and coalescence of fatigue and creep microcracks on smooth specimens and small notch specimens via surface replicas and photomicrographs. Quantitative information, such as, initiation period, growth, and coalescence behavior, statistical distributions of crack length, density of cracks, distribution patterns and crack growth properties, were obtained. From this study, the fracture process, fatigue life, and creep life prediction characterized by the growth of surface microcracks have been analysed by a new approach unifying the conventional approaches based on the final fracture of materials with the fracture mechanics approach. Knowledge of these parameters is critical for the application of fracture mechanics to fatigue and creep life assessment, and the damage evaluation of structures at elevated temperature.

  • After the concept of fracture mechanics was applied to fatigue crack propagation by Paris. Paris' law is widely used to predict fatigue crack growth behavior. Since Elber proposed the effective stress intensity factor(SIF) and showed a good agreement with experimental results using the proposed SIF, emphasis in crack propagation studies has been placed on measuring the effective stress range ratio. This paper proposes a numerical model to simulate the crack closure and propagation behaviour under various loading spectrum. The validity of the proposed model is checked by comparing with the Toyosada numerical solutions on the crack propagation behaviour. Important insights developed are summarized.

  • Interfacial evaluation and durability of Jute and Hemp fibers/polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated. Moisture content of various treated conditions were measured by thermogravimetic analyzer (TGA). After boiling water test, mechanical properties and IFSS between Jute, Hemp fibers and PP matrix decreased. On the other hand, work of adhesion increased due to swelled fibril by water. Surface energies of Jute and Hemp fibers before and after boiling water test were obtained using dynamic contact angle measurement. IFSS was not always consistent with thermodynamic work of adhesion. In boiling water case, since Jute and Hemp fibers could be swelled by water, surface area and moisture infiltration space increased. Environmental effect on microfailure modes of Jute or Hemp fibers and Jute or Hemp fibers/PP composites were obtained by observing via optical microscope and by monitoring acoustic emission (AE) events and their AE parameters. After boiling water test, unlike Hemp fiber, microfailure process of Jute fiber could occur due to low tensile strength by swelled fibril. In addition, AE events occurred more and AE amplitude and energy became lower than those of before boiling water test.
