  • This paper presents the results of flexural test of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP and conventional steel reinforcement for comparison. The beams were tested under a static load to examine the effects of the reinforcement ratio and compressive strength of concrete on cracking, deflection, ultimate capacity, and modes of failure. The test results showed that the ultimate capacity of the GFRP-reinforced beams increased with increasing reinforcement ratio and concrete strength, showing a 41.3~51.6% increase compared to steel reinforced beams. The deflections at maximum loads of the GFRP reinforced beams were 4.1~6.3 times higher that of steel reinforced beams. The measured deflections of GFRP reinforced beams decreased approximately 31% compared to the theoretical predictions because the theoretical flexural stiffness was underestimated at the maximum loads. For the GFRP-reinforced beams, the ACI code 440 design method resulted in conservative flexural strength estimates.

  • Korea has about 70% of its land classified as the mountain area, which has led to cut-slope being the result of substantial road and railway construction. However, there is currently a lack of research about the seismic retrofit design of a slope, even though many earthquakes have recently occurred at home and abroad. In this study, in order to investigate the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding during an earthquake, a series of 1 g shaking table tests and pseudo-static analyses were carried out. As a result, the stabilizing effect of piles against sliding during an earthquake was verified by the 1 g shaking table tests and the most effective result from the pseudo-static analyses was that the installation of the piles on the central part of the slope, where the failure surface included piles unlike the lower part and upper part of the slope. Furthermore, when the pile was installed on the central part of the slope, the change of the safety factor depending on the distance between the center of two piles was evaluated.

  • Technical design codes of slope stability for port structures were studied by comparing local Korean code with international codes; Japanese, EC and China codes. Three international design codes are based on limit state design method. Although Chinese code was based on the modified Fellenius method in slope stability analyses, it is currently changing to the simplified Bishop method. In Eurocode, the Morgenstern & Price method or the Bishop method is recommended. In Japanese code, however, the modified Fellenius method is preferentially recommended, but the simplified Bishop method could be alternatively used in case of thick sandy ground conditions. As for design parameter determination, Eurocode has stipulated comprehensive partial factors and partial material factors, however Japanese code has clarified empirical partial material factors for each port structure. Chinese code, the minimum ranges of the comprehensive partial factors are stipulated, and the use of the strength index by specific tests is concretely clarified with the safety condition. Case study of slope stability analyses showed the safety factors were higher in order of Chinese, Japanese and Eurocode, respectively.

  • The numerical analysis and safety assessment by construction stages were considered the essential examination particular in order to solving the unstability of long-span bridges in the middle a construction. When estimating structural response characteristics by the construction stage analysis of long-span bridges, the influence of the near-field ground motion (NFGM) would be evaluated as a critical factor for the seismic design because it indicates clearly different aspects from the existing input earthquake motion data. Therefore, this study re-examined the response aspect of long-span bridges considering NFGM characteristics based on the response spectrum result, and advanced the presented numerical analysis program by the related research for conducting the construction stage analysis and reliability assessment of long-span bridges efficiently. The excellency of various construction schemes was assessed using the time history analysis result of critical member considering NFGM characteristics. For evaluating quantitative safety level, the reliability analysis was conducted considering the influence of external uncertainties included in random variables, and presented the safety index and failure probability of the critical construction stage by NFGM characteristics. In addition, the reliability result was examined the influence of internal uncertainties using monte carlo simulation (MCS), and assessed the distribution aspect of the essential analysis result. It is expected that this study will provide the basic information for the construction safety improvement when performing seismic design of long-span bridges considering NFGM characteristics.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the static behavior of a horizontally curved prestressed concrete (PSC) girder. A 30m long full-scale curved PSC girder with 80.0m radius is fabricated by a portable curved form system. Deflections and concrete strains at the middle of span were measured. The obtained experimental results have been compared to those from F.E.A. analysis. When a initial crack developed, the applied load was 1.3 times the service design load and the vertical deflection at the middle of span satisfied the requirement for a live load state according to the Korea Bridge Design Specifications (2010). Also, the ductility of the full scale specimen satisfied the limit in the Specifications (2010). To verify the experimental results, a numerical F.E. analysis was carried and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. The horizontally curved PSC girder fabricated on site was found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the static behavior of a prestressed concrete (PSC) girder using pre-tension method. A 30m long full-scale pretension PSC girder is fabricated by the portable fabrication system and tested. All results have been compared to those obtained from F.E.A results. Deflections at the middle of girders have been measured for evaluation. Also, strains of concrete at the middle of span have been measured. From the results of experimental, the load when initial crack was developed was obtained to be 1.75 time the unfactered design load in the full-scale girder specimen. Also, the data of specimen are satisfied the desgin requirements of ductility on the Korea Bridge Design Specification(2010). In service state, the vertical deflection at center of test specimen when a initial crack was developed is satisfied the vertical deflection requirement under live load of the Korea Bridge Design Specification(2010). To verify the experimental results, we numerical analyze the test and confirmed that the data were similar with results from the test above. The pretension girder fabricated in site were found to have enough strength for safety under and after construction.

  • The satellite is exposed to various launch environments such as random vibrations and shock. Accordingly, structural design of electronic equipment mounted on satellite must meet reliability requirements at the box level. In addition, it is essential to secure the reliability of the solder joint applied to electronic equipment. In this paper, we performed a modal and quasi-static analysis for the purpose of satisfaction of the design requirements of the CCB (Camera Controller Box) present on the 500 kg-class compact advanced satellite (CAS500). In addition, structural safety of electronic components was verified by the Steinberg's method and random equivalent static analysis.

  • Stability of cut-slope, the orientation and dimension of which are gradually changed, has been analyzed by employing the cross-section method capable of comprehensibly considering the lithological, structural and mechanical characteristics of slope rock. Lithological fragility is investigated by inspecting the drilled core logs and BIPS image has been taken to delineate the rock structure. Engineering properties of drilled-core including the joint shear strength have been also measured. Potential failure modes of cut-slope and failure-induced joints are identified by performing the stereographic projection analysis. Traces of potential failure-induced joints are drawn on the cross-section which depicts the excavated geometry of cut-slope. Considering the distribution of potential plane failure-induced joint traces blocks of plane failure mode are hypothetically formed. The stabilities and required reinforcements of plane failure blocks located at the different excavation depth have been calculated to confirm the applicability of the cross-section method for the optimum cut-slope design.

  • If the flexural member of concrete is designed using the FRP rebar, suddenly brittleness destruction resulted from the fracture of FRP rebar is generated in the extreme situation because of brittleness characteristics of FRP rebar and concrete when designed to be less than balanced reinforcement ratio, so it is recommended to design the flexural member of concrete to be more than balanced reinforcement ratio. In ACI 440.1R-06 proposes the different bending strength decrease coefficient according to destructive form of concrete flexural member using the FRP rebar. However, ACI 440.1R-06 applies the same strength decrease coeffient to all FRP rebars made of diverse materials. If the same strength decrease coefficient is applied to all FRP rebars, effect of increasing the reinforcement ratio and selection of FRP rebar will be considerably limited. In this regard, we are to propose the formula to calculate the bending strength decrease coefficient in consideration of change in characteristics of FRP rebar and L/D through the reliability analysis in this paper.

  • This paper aims at estimating the fracture behavior at the bonded part of composite material. CFRP is manufactured as the type of TDCB. The static analysis of Mode 1 due to the configuartion factor of m is carried out. Four kinds of specimens have the configuartion factor(m) of 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5. As the study result, the displacements at specimens are shown to be similar each other in these four cases. At m of 3.5, the reaction force becomes highest as 412 N and is shown to be improved as much as 14% by comparing m of 2. The data on defection of the bonded interface and reaction force are thought to be contributed to the structural design of CFRP and the safe design.
