  • Kerosene(Jet A-1), one of the propellants for each stage's engine of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle-II(KSLV-II), functions as coolant at the same time as it flows inside the cooling jacket of the combustion chambers and is injected through the film cooling holes. A physical surrogate mixture model to reproduce the thermophysical characteristics of Jet A-1 has been selected and the thermodynamic/transport properties of the model fuel under high pressure including supercritical conditions have been estimated using SUPERTRAPP(NIST SRD4). Comparisons with the measured properties suggest that proposed database can be used to extract properties of Jet A-1 for conjugate heat transfer analysis of liquid propellant rocket engine thrust chambers. Predicted combustion/cooling performance of regeneratively cooled thrust chambers shall be validated through comparisons with upcoming firing test results.

  • The study proposes component models in developing an efficient platform for internet-based structural analysis. Since a structural analysis requires an operation of complicated algorithms, a client-side computation using X-Internet is preferred to a server-side computation to provide a flexible service for multi-users. To compete with the user-friendly interfaces of available commercial analysis programs, a window-based interface using Smart Client was applied. Also, component-based programming was performed with the considerations on reusability and expandability so that active Preparation for future change or modification could be feasible. The components describe the whole system by subdivision and simplification. In the relationship between upper-and lower-level components and also in the relationship between components and objects, a unified interface was used to clearly classify the connection between the libraries. By performing data communication between different types of platforms using XML WebService, a conner-stone of data transfer is proposed for the future integrated CAE. The efficiency of the developed platform has been examined through a sample structural analysis and design on planar truss structures.

  • This paper presented the theory related to a two dimensional linear cross-sectional analysis, recovery relationship and a one-dimensional nonlinear beam analysis for composite beam with initial twist and high aspect ratio. Using VABS including related theory, preceding research data of the composite wing structure has been modeled and compared. Cross-sectional analysis was performed and 1-D beam was modeled at cutting point including all the details of real geometry and material. The 3-D strain distribution and margin of safety at recovery point was calculated based on the global behavior of the 1-D beam analysis and visualize numerical results.

  • This paper presents a new constitutive model for numerical modeling the shear behaviour of rough rock joints. The model incorporates the dilatancy of joints on the basis of elasto-plastic theory. Barton's empirical shear strength formular are adopted in the formulation process. The mobilized JRC concept is evoked to address the shear strength hardening and sofrening phenomena. The mobilized JRC in the pre- and post-peak range is approximated by assuming that the variation of JRC is a function of tangential plastic work. Discrete finite joint element is used to implement the proposed constitutive model. The model is validated by the numerical direct shear test on a single joint which is subjected to different boundary conditions. The test results are in good agreement with the experimental observations reported by other authors. The numerical tests also exhibit that the proposed model can simulate the salient features envisaged in the behaviour of rough rock joints.

  • In this paper, a pulse-mode digital multilayer neural network with a massively parallel yet compact and flexible network architecture is presented. Algebraicneural operations are replaced by stochastic processes using pseudo-random pulse sequences and simple logic gates are used as basic computing elements. The distributions of the results from the stochastic processes are approximated using the hypergeometric distribution. A statistical model of the noise(error) is developed to estimate the relative accuracy associated with stochastic computing in terms of mean and variance. Numerical character recognition problems are applied to the network to evaluate the network performance and to justify the validity of analytic results based on the developed statistical model. The network architectures are modeled in VHDL using the mixed descriptions of gate-level and register transfer level (RTL). Experiments show that the statistical model successfully predicts the accuracy of the operations performed in the network and that the character classification rate of the network is competitive to that of ordinary Back-Propagation networks.

  • This article proposes a new pedestrian avoidance algorithm for social robots that coexist and communicate with humans and do not induce stress caused by invasion of psychological safety distance(Social Distance). To redefine the pedestrian model, pedestrians are clustered according to the pedestrian's gait characteristics(straightness, speed) and a social distance is defined for each pedestrian cluster. After modeling pedestrians(obstacles) with the social distances, integrated navigation algorithm is completed by applying the newly defined pedestrian model to commercial obstacle avoidance and path planning algorithms. To show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, two commercial obstacle avoidance & path planning algorithms(the Dynamic Window Approach (DWA) algorithm and the Timed Elastic Bands (TEB) algorithm) are used. Four cases were experimented in applying and non-applying the new pedestrian model, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce the stress index of pedestrians without loss of traveling time.

  • We design and implement a new case-based recommender system using implicit rating information for a digital content site. Our system consists of the User Profile Generation module, the Similarity Evaluation and Recommendation module, and the Personalized Mailing module. In the User Profile Generation Module, we define intra-attribute and inter-attribute weight deriver from own's past interests of a user stored in the access logs to extract individual preferences for a content. A new similarity function is presented in the Similarity Evaluation and Recommendation Module to estimate similarities between new items set and the user profile. The Personalized Mailing Module sends individual recommended mails that are transformed into platform-independent XML document format to users. To verify the efficiency of our system, we have performed experimental comparisons between the proposed model and the collaborative filtering technique by mean absolute error (MAE) and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) values. The results show that the proposed model is more efficient than the traditional collaborative filtering technique.

  • As avionics and mechanical devices have been developed, the size of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is getting smaller. However, the complicated and accurate missions are provided to the UAV. Among various types of UAVs, quadrotors are widely used for their availability by virtue of simple structure and hovering function. However, the control of quadrotor is highly constrained, because the quadrotor is an under-actuated system which has only 4 actuator inputs. To deal with this under-actuated problem, a new quadrotor model with two more actuators in addition to the 4 propeller inputs is provided to make the system fully-actuated. For the proposed model, a controller is designed using feedback linearization methods. To validate the model and to verify the performance of the proposed controller, numerical simulation is performed.

  • The ideas created by the execution of Value Engineering(VE) during design phase are usually proposed in a scattered way due to the characteristic of brainstorming. Because of this process, it is likely that similar ideas are proposed duplicatedly, and the created similar overlapping ideas may lead to different analyses and evaluations respectively. The efficient analysis/evaluation of the such similarly created ideas are not easy and the verification of the adequacy and objectivity of the ideas becomes harder and the objective evaluation gets more difficult as well as consumes much time. In spite of the perfect executions of preparatory step for idea creation, the difficulties in managing the similarly created ideas in quantity systematically result in the reduced reliability of the VE activities during design phase. Thus, this study proposes a process model for the efficient idea creation and management of the VE activities during design phase.

  • In this paper, experimental tests and theoretical studies were carried out to evaluate the tensile behavior of the sprayed FRP composite with chopped glass fiber. For this, a series of tensile strength tests with various strain rates were conducted on the specimens of the matrix and sprayed FRP composite. Sprayed FRP composite contained chopped glass fibers with fiber length of 15mm and a specific volume fraction of fibers of 25 %. An inverse simulation was conducted to simulate the strain rate sensitivity based on the present experimental data of the epoxy resin. The simulated viscosity value is adapted to the micromechanics-based viscoelastic damage model(Yang et al., 2012), and the overall tensile behavior of sprayed FRP composites is predicted. It was seen from the comparative study between present experimental data and predication results that the proposed methodology can be used to predict the viscoelastic behavior of the sprayed FRP composite.
