  • This study carried out life cycle assessment for evaluating environmental impacts of timber Arch-Truss bridge by using domestic Pinus rigida Miller glued-laminated timber throughout life cycle such as extraction, manufacturing, transportation, construction, use, dismantlement, transportation of waste, disposal and recycling. The life cycle GHG (GreenHouse Gas) emissions of the target bridge are 192.56 ton $CO_2$ eq. in 50 years. Especially, the life cycle GHG emissions of concrete used in the target bridge are 82.84 ton $CO_2$ eq. which accounts for 53.02% of the GWP (Global Warming Potential) in extraction and manufacturing stages. The target bridge is constructed of $116.57m^3$ of domestic Pinus rigida Miller glued-laminated timber and used timber has stored 104.72 ton $CO_2$. If an effect of carbon storage in timber is applied to the total GHG emissions of the target bridge, the GHG emissions can be reduced by 54.38%. In the case of substitution effect, if domestic Pinus rigida Miller glued-laminated timber replaces steel manufactures used in other bridge which has the same structure and life span as the target bridge, the GHG emissions in extraction and manufacturing stages can be reduced by 10.26% to 23.91%.

  • It is well known that axial tension decreases the shear strength of RC & PSC beams without transverse reinforcement, and axial compression increases the shear resistance. What is perhaps not very well understood is how much the shear resistance capacity is influenced by axial load. RC beams without shear reinforcement subjected to large axial compression and shear may fail in a very brittle manner at the instance of first diagonal cracking. As a result, a conservative approach should be used for such members. According to the ACI Code, the shear strength in web is calculated by effect of axial force and the vertical force in the stirrups calculated by $45^{\circ}$ truss model. This study was performed to examine the effect of axial force in reinforced concrete beams by nonlinear FEM program (ATENA-2D).

  • The studies of seismic response control are mainly conducted on rahmen structure until now. Spatial structures have the different dynamic characteristics from general rahmen structures. So, the results of these studies are very limited for vibration control and seismic design of spatial structures. TMD(Tuned Mass Damper) is one of the vibration control device that is mainly used to reduce the vibration level of high-rised building, bridge or stadium structure. In this study, an arch structure was used as an example structure because it has primary characteristics of spatial structures and the seismic behaviour of spatial structures may fundamentally differ from the conventional building structures. So, the vibration control performance is evaluated according to the change of TMD mass and TMD location. It is reasonable to install TMD at the quarter point that is dominant mode vector of 1st mode, And it is appropriate that TMD mass ratio is 2% in the seismic response control of arch structure.

  • The various systems as the seismic resistance systems are used to reduce the seismic response of structure. And the seismic isolation system among them is the system that reduces the seismic vibration to be transmitted from foundation to upper structure. The purpose of isolation system is to lengthen the period of structure and make its period shift from the dominant period of earthquake. In this study, the seismic behavior of arch structure with lead rubber bearing(LRB) and friction pendulum system(FPS) is analyzed. The arch structure is the simplest structure and has the basic dynamic characteristics among large spatial structures. Also, Large spatial structures have large vertical response by horizontal seismic vibration, unlike seismic behavior of normal rahmen structures. When horizontal seismic load is applied to the large spatial structure with isolation systems, the horizontal acceleration response of the large spatial structure is reduced and the vertical seismic response is remarkably reduced.

  • In this study, an equation for modelling the shear strength of reinforced concrete member with web reinforcement is proposed. Although the general formulas for shear strength of reinforced concrete member with small a /d are obtained based on the experimental results, the proposed equation herein is derived from lower bound theorem of limit analysis. The proposed model takes into account arch mechanism and truss mechanism. And ir provides the values of divided shear strength ratio of each mechanism as well as visual understanding of the mechanism on how the given load is transfered to the support. Also, the model takes into account the effect of a /d. longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and web reiriforcement ratio quantitively. Based on the comparisons of the result of this model with previous, test results, it shows good agreements.

  • A shear experiment of one-way monotonic loading was carried out with the shear span ratio as the main experimental variable for reinforced concrete beam. Using the finite element analysis as the experimental analysis tool and the analysis method to compute the shear resistance of small shear span ratio, a new macro-model composed of crooked main strut and sub strut is proposed in consideration of the effect of bond action between re-bar and concrete based on the experimental result. The experimental finding affirmed the validity of the proposed macro-model when the shear span ratio was at or below 0.75 and confirmed that the experimental result was the most consistent with the computed analysis result when the effective factor of concrete compressive strength was set at 0.75.

  • To deepen the understanding of shear behaviour in beams without transverse reinforcement, the relative importance of five contributing factors to concrete shear resistance($v_c$), which are i)flexural compression zone, ii)friction at crack faces, iii)dowel action, iv)arch action and recently identified, v)residual tensile stresses across cracks, was explained physically using two analytical methods based on the truss concept. One is called "Modified Compression Field Theory(MCFT)" considering ii) and v) explicitly, and the other "Crack Friction Truss Model(CFTM)" more dominantly ii) in determining concrete resistance. To verify their effectiveness, the predictions using MCFT and CFTM were also made for twenty KAIST beam tests($f'_c$=53.7Mpa), designated more likely to the development of the size effect law based on the fracture mechanics concept. Experimental findings with varying of a/d, longitudinal reinforcement ratios, and obtained from MCFT enabled additional explanations for some phenomena which were difficult to measure in tests. However, MCFT seemed somewhat conservative for beams with higher longitudinal reinforcement, while somewhat unsafe for beams with larger depths. More tests are necessary leading to firm conclusions in these areas.

  • This paper briefly describes the fundamental strategies--path-tracing, pin-pointing, and path-switching--in the computational elastic bifurcation theory of geometrically non-linear single-load-parameter conservative elastic spatial structures. The stability points in the non-linear elasticity may be classified into limit points and bifurcation points. For the limit points, the path tracing scheme that successively computes the regular equilibrium points on the equilibrium path, and the pinpointing scheme that precisely locates the singular equilibrium points were sufficient for the computational stability analysis. For the bifurcation points, however, a specific procedure for path-switching was also necessary to detect the branching paths to be traced in the post-buckling region. After the introduction, a general theory of elastic stability based on the energy concept was given. Then path tracing, an indirect method of detecting multiple bifurcation points, and path switching strategies were described. Next, some numerical examples of bifurcation analysis were carried out for a trussed stardome, and a pin-supported plane circular arch was described. Finally, concluding remarks were given.

  • This paper investigates the variation of post-buckling behaviours of spatial structures after sizing optimization with linear assumptions. The mathematical programming technique is used to produce the optimum member size of spatial structures against external load. Total weight of structure is considered as the objective function to be minimized and the displacement occurred at loading point and member stresses of structures are used as the constraint functions. The finite difference method is used to calculate the design sensitivity of objective function with respect to design variables. The post-buckling analysis carried out by using the geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code ISADO-GN. It is found to be that there is a huge difference between the post buckling behaviours of the initial and optimized structures. Therefore, the stability of optimized spatial structures with linear assumption should be throughly checked by appropriate nonlinear analysis techniques. Finally, the present numerical results are provided as benchmark test suite for future study of large spatial structures.
