Study on the Dynamic Behaviors of Engine Bearing with the Inertia Effect of Crank Pin Journal (크랭크 핀의 질량관성을 고려한 엔진 베어링의 틈새 거동 연구)

  • Investigation of the mass effect on the journal traces in the clearance of engine bearing has been performed for better design of mass distribution of crank system components such as crank pin, piston, con-rod, balance weight, crank throw weight, etc. as well as for better oil reaction behaviors to the applied forces from the cylinder pressures on the bearing. In this preliminary study, crank pin traces in the engine bearing clearance are computed by varying the equivalent magnitude of crank pin mass that includes the masses of crank pin, piston, con-rod. etc.. while most previous studies regarding journal traces in the bearing clearance neglect the inertia effects of crank pin mass. Although the inertia effect of pill mass is negligibly small compared to viscous force by ${\pi}bearing$ theory, it is found that it gives a great amount of influences on the journal traces in full bearing computation $(2\pi\;bearing\;theory)$ under the dynamic loading conditions.

  • An experimental study was performed to discover the tribological behaviors of pure silver coated 52100 bearing steel. Pure silver coatings ranging from 80 nm to several micrometers were produced by a thermal evaporation coating method. Experiments using a thrust ball bearing-typed rolling test-rig were performed for the investigations of the influence of coating thickness on the tribological rolling behavior. The existence of optimum film thickness which revealed minimum rolling resistance was discovered. A careful analysis on the contact surfaces for the optimum film thickness has been performed. The contact patches produced by the transferred silver films played an important role for the rolling resistance to keep low.

  • In order to gain better understanding of wear behaviors of TiN-coated boron cast iron, tests and analyses were conducted with block-on disc type tribometer. TiN layer of thickness $2 \mu m$ and $4 \mu m$, coated by cathodic arc evaporation process, were experimentally investigated with the variation of applied load and sliding speed under dry sliding condition. Wear characteristics were expressed in terms of the three-dimentional wear map as well as the wear rate vs sliding speed and load. Comparisons of wear and friction characteristics between coated cast irons and uncoated cast irns were also made. Wear mechanism of TiN layer was explained in view of surface interaction between the mating surfaces. The thicker coating exhibited higher hardness and adhesion strength. the significance of stresses at the surface and in the subsurface was briefly discussed in relation to the wear behavior.

  • The friction and wear behavior of $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC, and $Si_{3}N_{4}$ under the different sliding conditions were investigated. The cylinder-on-disc wear tester was used for a wear test method. Using the servo-motor, the sliding speed did not alternate due to the frictional forces. Three kinds of loads were selected to watch the variation of the wear rates and the frictional forces under a constant speed. Three kinds of sliding conditions were used to see the effects of the oxidation and the abrasion. The dominant wear mechanisms of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ were the abrasion and the formation of transfer layers. The abrasion has a great effect on the wear of SiC. The wear of $Si_{3}N_{4}$ was due to the asperity-failure and the oxidation. Also, the wear rate of each ceramic is shown to be related to the frictional power provided to the tribological system.

Experimental Study on the Dynamic Behaviour of Oil Seals (오일시일의 동적거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This paper deals with an experimental study on the dynamic behaviour of rubber oil seals when the interferences between the shaft and the seal lip as well as the dynamic eccentricities are present. The micro-separation of the sealing gap was observed with the aid of an image processing apparatus. The temperature of the seal lip edge, friction torque and the dynamic sealing gap profile are experimentally investigated for the initial interference and the shaft eccentricity. The data was simultaneously measured under the operation conditions. Experimental results show that, as the shaft speed is increased, the leakage of sealed fluids is increasing for a certain range of shaft speeds. The test data indicates that the shaft eccentricity clearly produces the gap separation between the shaft and the seal lip which is unable to follow the radial displacement of shaft as the shaft speed increases.

Deformation and Fracture Behavioos of Soda-lime Glass by Sliding Microindentation (미끄럼 미소압입에 의한 소다석회 유리의 변형 및 파괴 거동)

  • The various deformation and fracture behaviors under light loads in soda-lime glass under sliding Vickers indentation have been studied. In soda-lime glass, deformation and fracture behaviors can be classified into four different patterns by applied load. At very light load (<0.1N), plastic deformation only occurred. At low loads (0.1~0.8N), median crack, appear. At intermediate loads (0.8~3.0N), median and lateral cracking occurred leading to a large chipping. At high loads (3.0~6.0N), a crushed zone was observed with median crack. The friction experiment finds that the increasing in the friction coefficients coincides with the onset of crushing in soda-lime glass.

  • The thermal deformation of the contact seal components has been analyzed using the finite element method. The temperature distributions, the thermal deformations and contact stresses are solved numerically for the contact surface with wear coning effects. The thermal deformation is always shown to distort the sealing surface along the radius of the seal ring. The results show that the deformations of inner radius side are significant compared with those of outer radius. Thus, the thermal deformation due to thermal heatings may promote the coned face wear or wear related thermal cracks at the contacting face of the seal ring component.

  • The Dynamic Behavior in line contacts between the vane tip and camring in an oil hydraulic vane pump with intravanes has been investigated. Variations of the radial acting force of a vane were calculated from previously measured results of dynamic infernal pressure in four chambers surrounding a vane, and variations of the behavior were estimated in both the rotational speed range from 1200 to 2700 rpm and in the delivery pressure range from 10 to 21Mpa. The results indicate the variations of the radial acting force. Under the standard operating condition (to 14 Mpa, 1800 rpm), the radial acting force on the vane is governed by internal dynamic pressures, but it is more influenced by rotating speed at higher than 2000 rpm relatively.

  • Recently, due to the erosion damage that were generated increasingly at alloy metals of slide bearing by cavity of lubricating oil with tendency of high speed and high output of reciprocating engine, there is a need to study the process on the formation of cavitation erosion, and the characteristic of cavitation erosion at lubricating oil environments under various condition for marine ship. Therefore, the apparatus of cavitation erosion experiment used 20 KHz, $24 \mu m$ piezoelectric vibrator. The main results obtained through this test method are as follows: 1. The max. erosion rate at lubricating oil environments was related to the change of space, oil film thickness, and shown to tendency of gear oil>system oil>turbine oil>mixed oil environments with different viscosity. 2. The pitted hole by cavitation erosion at high viscosity oil environments became small and deep, and in addition to, they appeared to be wide and shallow at low viscosity.

High Temperature Wear Behavior of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia-Alumina Composite Coatings (플라즈마 용사된 알루미나-지르코니아 복합체의 고온 마모.마찰 거동)

  • High temperature wear behaviors of plasma-sprayed ZrO$_{2}$-$Y_{2}O_{3}$ composite coatings were investigated for high temperature wear resistance applications. The composite powders containing 20, 50, 80 vol% of alumina for plasma spray were made by spray drying method. Wear tests with composite coated specimens were performed at temperature ranges from room temperature to 800$^{\circ}$C. Wear tests were also carried out with heat treated specimens at room temperature. The microstructural change of coatings and the worn surface were examined by SEM and XRD. Sharp increase of wear loss at high temperature wear test was observed in specimens containing 50 and 80 vol% alumina. Similar trend was observed in the heat treated coatings. The measured residual stress was increased with increased alumina contents and heat treating temperatures. Residual stress induced during heat treatment appeared to be responsible to the observed harmful effect of alumina additions on the high temperature wear.
