  • A rotor blade is an important device that converts kinetic energy of wind into mechanical energy. Rotor blades affect the power performance, energy conversion efficiency, and loading and dynamic stability of wind turbines. Therefore, considering the characteristics of a wind turbine system is important for achieving optimal blade design. This study examined the general blade design procedure for a wind turbine system and aero-structure design results for a 2-MW class wind turbine blade (KR40.1b). As suggested above, a rotor blade cannot be designed independently, because its ultimate and fatigue loads are highly dependent on system operating conditions. Thus, a reference 2-MW wind turbine system was also developed for the system integrated load calculations. All calculations were performed in accordance with IEC 61400-1 and the KR guidelines for wind turbines.

  • This study conducted aeromechanics modeling and structural load analyses of Tilt Rotor Aeroacoustic Model (TRAM), a 25% scaled V-22 tiltrotor model used in wind tunnel tests. A rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II, was used. Analysis results of this study in low-speed forward flights were compared with DNW test and previous analysis results. Blade flap bending moments were in good agreement with measured data. Mean values and oscillatory loads for lead-lag bending and torsion moments were slightly different from measured data. However, when mean values were removed, results of structural loads for one rotor revolution were moderately compared with wind tunnel tests and previous analyses. Total forces and half peak-to-peak forces of the pitch link reasonably well matched with previous analysis results and measured data. Finally, harmonic magnitudes of blade structural loads were investigated.

  • Blast load, an impulsive load with extremely short time duration with very high pressure, is effected by ground and air condition, weight of charge, shape and location of structure. In this study, a blast dynamic analysis for the air-structural integrated model considering dynamic properties of materials and simulation of complex blast wave propagation by Arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian technique is suggested to perform an accurate blast analysis of concrete structures. For the verification of the proposed blast analysis method, which is the air-structure integrated model using ALE technique, the comparison of analysis and experimental results is performed. The verification confirms that the simulation of realistic behavior of RC wall structures is possible using ALE method. Also, the example cases which have been analyzed using this method show that the estimation to the structural failure criterion for blast load failure can be represented by energy absorbtion procedure.

  • In order to design floating structures, it should be required to evaluate hydrodynamic motions and structural behavior under the wave loadings. Then, structural behavior of floating structures should be evaluated including the effects of wave-induced hydraulic pressure subjected to floating structures. However, there has been a problem to exactly evaluate structural behavior of floating structures since it was difficult to directly connect wave-induced hydraulic pressure resulting from hydrodynamic analysis with structural analysis model. In this study, in order to exactly evaluate structural behavior of floating structures under the wave loading, integrated analysis of hydrodynamic motion and structural behavior was carried out to the large-scaled floating structure. The wave-induced hydraulic pressure resulting from hydrodynamic analysis AQWA were directly mapped to structural analysis model ANSYS bia Workbench interface of ANSYS Inc.. As the results of this study, it was found that the integrated analysis of this study evaluate exactly structural behavior of floating structures under the wave loadings since this method can directly reflect wave-induced hydraulic pressure resulting from hydrodynamic analysis to structural analysis model. Also, as the results of structural behavior evaluation, it was found that the tensile stress on the top slab was maximized at the wave direction of $0^{\circ}$, and tensile stress on the bottom slab was maximized at the wave direction of $45^{\circ}$, respectively.

  • Performance and hub vibratory load analyses for a lift-offset coaxial rotor are conducted using a rotorcraft comprehensive analysis code, CAMRAD II. The lift-offset coaxial rotor is trimmed to match the total rotor thrust(lift-offset coaxial rotor's thrust) or the individual rotor thrust(upper and lower rotor thrusts, respectively) in this study. The individual rotor's lift and torque, and effective rotor lift to drag ratio for the total rotor are investigated for various advance ratios and lift-offset values. The two result sets with different trim methods are similar to each other and they are correlated well with the wind-tunnel test results. Therefore, the present study using CAMRAD II validates successfully the aeromechanics modeling and analysis techniques for the lift-offset coaxial rotor.

  • Suction piles have been widely used as foundations and anchor systems in offshore industry, and recently, it have been tried to be used as foundations for offshore wind turbines. Many researches have shown that stiffness of a foundation could effect dynamic responses of a offshore wind turbine so that appropriate modeling application of wind turbine foundations is recommended. In this paper, we calculate a stiffness matrix of a suction foundation through 3D FEM analysis and compare the results with the ones calculated by conventional formula for estimating stiffness of shallow foundations. And then we carry out integrated load analysis for the evaluation of dynamic responses and natural frequencies of the structure using the calculated stiffness matrix. The results shows that the effect of load in the mudline is not large, but in the case of assuming the foundation as a fixed support, the natural frequency is over-estimated up to 10%. Therefore, considering stiffness of foundations is recommended when you evaluate the natural frequencies of wind turbine structures.

  • In this study, computational structural dynamic analyses of a gyrocopter have been conducted considering unsteady dynamic hub-loads due to rotating blades. 3D CATIA models with detailed mechanical parts we constructed and virtually assembled into the complete aircraft configuration. The dynamic loading generated by rotating blades in the forward flight condition are calculated by a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code such as FLUENT. Modal based transient and frequency response analyses are used to efficiently investigate vibration characteristics of the gyrocopter. Free vibration analysis results for different fuel and pilot conditions, frequency responses and transient responses for critical flight conditions are also presented in detail.

  • A constitutive model unifying plasticity and crack damage mode)s was developed to address the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete planar members. The stress of concrete in tension-compression was conceptually defined by the sum of the compressive stress developed by the strut-action of concrete and the tensile stresses developed by tensile cracking. The plasticity model with multiple failure criteria was used to describe the isotropic damage of compressive crushing affected by the anisotropic damage of tensile cracking. The concepts of the multiple fixed crack damage model and the plastic flow model of tensile cracking were used to describe the tensile stress-strain relationship of multi-directional cracks. This unified model can describe the behavioral characteristics of reinforced concrete in cyclic tension-compression conditions, i.e. multiple tensile crack orientations, progressively rotating crack damage, and compressive crushing of concrete. The proposed constitutive model was implemented to finite element analysis, and it was verified by comparison with existing experimental results from reinforced concrete shear panels and walls under cyclic load conditions.
