  • Acute abdominal Aortic occlusion is rare but it is a vascular emergency with high mortality and morbidity. Therefore, delay in diagnosis can have severe impact on the prognosis. A 60-year-old women complained of paresthesia, paralysis, and severe pain in bilateral lower extremities on 13th day after open heart surgery for mitral stenosis, atrial fibrillation, coronary arterial stenosis, tricuspid regurgitation, and atrial septal defect. Her skin was mottled and cool from the umbilicus to the feet, and there were no palpable pulses in the lower exteremities. We diagnosed an acute abdominal aortic occlusion using the Multi-Detector Row Spiral Computed Tomography and successfully treated the problem with emergent thrombo-embolectomy and Aortobifemoral bypass.

  • For the purpose of an estimation of age based on the changes in the human dental cavity caused by increase in age, 1,208 extracted teeth in the parts from central incisors and lateral incisors and lateral incisors to second premolars of upper and lower, right and left side were evaluated and analized all of surface index of pulp cavity. The results are as follows : 1. The surface index of pulp caxities of upper and lower, central and lateral incisors, and tend to decrease regularly as the age increase. So above teeth are more applicable to age estimation than canine and premolars. 2 For the purpose of age estimation by surface index of pulp cavity of central and lateral incisor, linear equations are as follows. Upper central incisor: X=(16.301-Y)/0.12 Upper lateral incisor: X=(16.620-Y)/0.11 Lower central incisor: X=(20.963-Y)/0.16 X=Age Y=Surface index of pulp cavity Correlation coefficient between chronologic age and estimated age is 0.699 3.The least error(3.3 yrs of age)reveals in 41-45 age group, which shows the highest possibility of estimation of age. The highest error(4.1 yrs of age)reveals in 61-65 age group and 56-60 age group.

  • This experiment was designed to investigate the analgesic effect of non-invasive electroacupuncture treatment on femoral head osteotomy in dogs. Twelve dogs were divided into 3 groups in this experiment. Electroacupuncture group was non-invasively electrostimulated in Huan Tiao (GB-30) acupoint for 10 minutes by 4.5V, 5Hz for 10 days. Medication group was treated with carprofen (4mg/kg, P.O.) for 10 days. Control group was not treated. Each group was pre-operatively and post-operatively scored by using VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), SDS (Simple Descriptive Scale), NRS (Numerical Rating Scale), and measured serum cortisol levels. The results of VAS, SDS and NRS in electroacupuncture and medication groups were better than those of control group. And, the results of electroacupuncture group were better than those of medication group since 6th day after osteotomy in pain management(p<0.05). But, there were no significances in serum cortisol level among 3 groups. In conclusion, non-invasive electroacupuncture treatment showed sufficient analgesic effect on postoperative pain management after femoral head osteotomy, and VAS, SDS, and NRS scoring system would be adapted in evaluation of pain management.

  • Echinostomiasis is an endemic intestinal trematodiasis of humans in Korea We observed a human case of Echinostomn honense infection who had ulcerations on the duodenal mucosa. A 55-year old man living in Hamyang-gun, Kyongnam, complained of epigastric pain with hematemesis In April 1994. Endoscopy revealed lesions of early gastric cancer and duodenal ulcerations. A penetrating parasite into the duodenal mucosa was picked out, and identified as E. honense. As the patient was treated 10 praziquantel 10 mg/kg single dose,3 more E. hofene and 7 Metogonimw worms were recovered. This case demonstrates that echinostomiasis causes gross ulcerations in the duodenum.
