  • In Korea, mathematics education has been taken according to the 7th national mathematics curriculum renovated by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development announcement in 1997. The education of probability and Statistics has been carried out as a part of this curriculum. We analyze and compare mathematics 1 textbooks for 11-12 grade students. Descriptions of random variable, sample variance and sample standard deviation, distribution of sample mean, and etc. which are on some textbooks, are misleaded in school education. We suggest the unbiased estimator of sample variance in accordance with textbooks and central limit theorem of sample mean under normal population.

  • This study was carried out in order to identify the error types of statistical graphs for statistical literacy education. We analyze the meaning of using graphs in statistical problem solving, and identify categories, frequencies, and contexts as the components of statistical graphs. Error types of representing categories and frequencies make statistics consumers see incorrect distributions of data by subjective point of view of statistics producers and visual illusion. Error types of providing contexts hinder the interpretation of statistical information by concealing or twisting the contexts of data. Moreover, the findings show that tasks provide standardized frame already for drawing graphs in order to avoid errors and pay attention to the process of drawing the graph rather than statistical literacy for analyzing data. We suggest some implications about statistical literacy education, ethical problems, and knowledge for teaching to be considered when teaching the statistical graph in elementary mathematics classes.

  • In school mathematics, concepts of definite integral and integration by substitution have mathematical connection with introduction of probability density function, expectation of continuous random variable, and standardization of normal distribution. However, we have difficulty in finding mathematical connection between integration and continuous probability distribution in the curriculum manual, 13 kinds of 'Basic Calculus and Statistics' and 10 kinds of 'Integration and Statistics' authorized textbooks, and activity books applied to the revised curriculum. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a teaching method connected with mathematical concepts of integral in regard to three concepts in continuous probability distribution chapter-introduction of probability density function, expectation of continuous random variable, and standardization of normal distribution. To find mathematical connection between these three concepts and integral, we analyze a survey of student, the revised curriculum manual, authorized textbooks, and activity books as well as 13 domestic and 22 international statistics (or probability) books. Developed teaching method was applied to actual classes after discussion with a professional group. Through these steps, we propose the result by making suggestions to revise curriculum or change the contents of textbook.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the teaching of statistical graphs according to elementary mathematics curriculum. To do this, we set up three research questions as follows. First, what is the change in achievement standards related to the teaching of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics curriculum? Second, what is the change in the teaching of the drawing of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics curriculum? Third, what is the change in the teaching of understanding of statistical graphs in elementary mathematics curriculum? For the first research question, we analyzed the achievement standards related to the teaching of the statistics of the 2015 revised curriculum from the first curriculum. For the second research question, we analyzed how to provide students with the opportunity to draw graphs(number of drawings) and whether to present the basic frame of the graphs(frame provided). For the third research question, we analyzed questions in the textbooks based on the graph understanding; 'reading data', 'finding the relation between data', 'interpreting data', 'understanding the situation'. As a result of the analysis, the achievement standard in the curriculum has changed in the direction of fostering statistical thinking, and it has been changed to emphasize the interpretation of the graph so as to make the graph drawing easy. However, 'interpreting data' and 'understanding the situation' were still lacking.

  • As the society progresses, the need for changing in the college eduation system is arising. Recently some statistics department are in transition states to information realted department. As these trends might face some troubles, we suggest the alternatives; the team teaching, the collaboration with application fileds in developing courses, and the double major system.

  • This paper analyzes subjects related to Math/Stat and studies teaching effect on subject development connected Math/Stat in software curriculum. Among many subjects related to the software, this paper shows exemplary applications of Math/Stat in the software curriculum. Thereby this opens potential application fields of Math/Stat. This confirms that Math/Stat is not only an essential subject to improve competitiveness but also a strategic element in the field of software. Therefore, by maximizing the academic outcome through the interdisciplinary combination of software and Math/Stat, it is possible to educate more competitive and skilled professionals.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the enrichment curriculum connected to a Revised Version of 7th National Informatics Curriculum in Middle School for gifted students in IT education. This study uses a Delphi Method to develop a curriculum which is comprised of educational objectives, educational contents, teaching-learning method and educational evaluation. This study carried out a three-round delphi survey in 'The problem-solving method and its procedure' field from grade 1 to grade 3. In this study, first, the responses of the experts about educational objectives, educational contents, teaching-learning method and educational evaluation of each grade were analyzed. Second, organized items were designed. Finally, important items were selected by statistics.

  • This study analyzes how statistical literacy is implemented along with the statistical problem-solving process as described in the Statistical Estimation Unit of the textbook by the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. The analytical framework was developed from the literature, and consists of 'context', 'variability', 'mathematical and statistical knowledge', 'using of technological instruments', 'critical attitude', and 'communication'. From the perspective of the statistical problem-solving process, the analysis revealed that many tasks equivalent to 'Analyzing Data' but lacked tasks related to 'Interpreting Results' and 'Formulating Questions'. As a result of analyzing the reflection of each element of statistical literacy, 'mathematical and statistical knowledge' was the most common task, but 'critical attitude' and 'using of technological instruments' were rarely dealt with. Based on the results of this textbook analysis, it was intended to provide implications for improving the curriculum and the development of textbooks for the growth of statistical literacy.

  • Recently Statistical literacy, reasoning, and thinking become a educational issue. Especially the important of Statistical literacy in purpose of statistics education has be discussed and come to the fore. So we research about Statistical literacy mainly with advanced researches. We consider about the definition and components of Statistical literacy which is discussed in the meantime. And we look into the purpose of statistics education in the school mathematics curriculum and discuss about the implications for the statistics education from the Statistical literacy.

  • The korean mathematics textbooks according to the 2007 revised mathematics curriculum and the MiC textbooks are similar in that they introduce mathematical materials in real life situations and are composed in such a way that require students to form their own mathematical concepts. However the MiC textbooks are focus more on situation-centered problems and context-centered problems where a set of procedures need to be followed in order to arrive at an answer. So, this paper is aim at comparing the units of statistics in the korean mathematics textbooks and the MiC textbooks in order to find the implications for writing textbook. By comparing the specific content and the used methods, I found Korean textbooks focused on understanding concepts and spending less time surveying and collecting data. On the other hand, MiC textbooks used activities that real mathematicians would be involved with, such as surveying and analyzing data to compose mathematical concepts.
