  • Soil air $CO_2$ concentrations were measured in two soil depths (O and B horizon) by (1) the use of the Draeger direct reading chromatographic tubes and (2) syringe gas collections with gas chromatographic detection in a Spodosol supporting low elevation, commercial spruce-fir forest, Maine, USA, Mean soil air $CO_2$ concentrations(%) during the growing season of 1991 ranged from 0.11 in the O horizon by the Draeger method to 0.29 in the B horizon by the gas chromatographic method. Soil air $CO_2$ concentrations by the Draeger method were lower than those obtained using the gas chromatographic method for both soil horizons. However, data from the two methods were significantly(p<0.01) correlated and paralleled each other relative to temporal patterns. Positive and highly significant correlations existed between soil air $CO_2$ concentrations and soil temperature, although correlation coefficients only ranged from 0.13 to 0.32, depending on the method and horizon chosen.

  • For the selection of powerful antagonistic bacterium for biological control of soil borne Eminia carotovora subsp. carotovora causing rot of vegetable, excellent strains (S4, S14, 565) were selected from 1,196 strains of bacteria which were isolated from rhizosphere in vegetable root rot-suppresive soil. Strains were identified to be Pseudomonas species with Api 20NE kit. Antagonistic substance was produced in 523 synthetic broth medium at pH 7~8 and $30^{\circ}C$ during 3 days culture. The substance was stable in the pH range of 6 to 9. When the basal medium was supplemented with mannitol and sorbitol as carbon source and calcium chloride as metal salt, the production of the inhibitory substance was increased. The inhibitory acitivity was increased by the addition of fertilizer in soil. The isolated strains were resistant to the agricultural chemical such as benomyl and fosethyl-Al-folpet, and the antibiotics such as penicillin and lincomycin. We had found that Pseudomonas sp. S14 strain had a single plasmid. After treated with acridin orange for curing, we confirmed the existence of antagonistic gene in the chromosomal DNA.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the evapotranspiration and variations of soil moisture contents for soybeans. The relationship between actual evapotranspiration obtained by the water balance equation and estimated evapotranspiration obtained by the soil moisture model was analyzed. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The total amount of actual evapotranspiration of soybeans during growing season was 405.7mm. The total amount of reference crop evapotranspiration of soybeans that was estimated by Pan evaporation and Hargreaves method were 547.8 mm and 586.8 mm, respectively. Crop coefficient during growing season were shown on Table 1. 2. Measured actual evapotranspiration of soybean during growing season was 405.7 mm and estimated actual evapotranspiration by pan evaporation and Hargreaves method were 424.7 mm, and 426.1mm, r3 respectively. 3. The variations of soil moisture content for soybeans were high at 10cm layer, as compared with those at 30cm and 50cm layers. Because discrepancy between the variations of soil moisture content predicted by model and observed by soil moisture meter was still great, it is required to study the consumptive types of soil moisture at each root depth.

  • This research has been done to investigate influence of soil physical and chemical properties on forest environmental change by fired pine forest in Koseong, Kangwondo. The sample sites were divided by not-fired sites(NF), not-cutting site after fired(FNC), cutting and planting sites after fired(FCP) and cutting and not-planting sites after fired(FC). Soil texture of whole sites was sandy clay loam. Sand content of NF top soil were lower than those of sub soil and clay content were higher, while FNC, FCP and FC sand content of top soil were higher than those of sub soil. Total porosity didn't differ between the sites. Coarse porosity and permeability had the increasing order as NF> FNC> FCP> FC, but fine porosity and bulk density had the opposite trends. Because forest fire removed the vegetation and then soil erosion was accelerated, forest environmental changes by forest fire greatly degraded soil porosity and permeability which were indices for forest water retention, so that soil physical properties were deteriorated. Both top and sub soil pHs of NF and FNC were higher than those of FCP and FC. Organic matter content and total nitrogen content of top and sub soils were high in order as NF> FNC> FCP> FC. Cation exchange capacities and exchangeable cation(K+, Na+, $Ca^2$+, $Mg^2$+) content in top soils were higher than those in sub soils, and in order as NF> FNC> FCP> FC, to be compared by the sites. Those mean that forest fire result from the erosion of top soil layers.

  • In this study, a new formula of settlement at the head of IGM was suggested and the applicability of suggested formula was verified with field test results. This suggested formula was the function of the settlement at the shaft head and the elastic compression of shaft. The applicability of suggested formula was verified with the result of in-situ load test. Also, the bearing capacity of drilled shaft with the IGM's theory was compared with those of classical theories. The results showed that classical method showed smaller values of bearing capacity than those of field load test data. The results of analysis also showed that the suggested formula and IGM's theory were applicable for the estimation of bearing capacity with the increase of shaft settlement. Especially, settlement correction factor($k_m$), which reflects ground condition and load transfer characteristics, increases as the applying load and shaft deformation increase. This suggested formula was applicable for medium density or higher density of soil condition and $k_m=1$ means yielding load for firm soil condition.

  • In the present study, laboratory tests including the seepage-induced consolidation test, suction test, and desiccation shrinkage test are performed to investigate characteristics of the desiccation shrinkage in reclaimed hydraulic fills. Soil samples for laboratory tests are obtained from three sites (districts of Haenam, Kogeum and Koheung in Chunnam area). Desiccation shrinkage settlement caused by three dimensional volume change is numerically evaluated using finite difference technique based on the governing equation proposed by Abu-Hejleh & Znidarcic. Also characteristics of the desiccation shrinkage analyzed from the test results are used as input data for numerical evaluations. Further predicted total settlements including the self-weight consolidation settlement are compared with values measured at the site of Haenam district. Finally, effects of parameters related to the desiccation shrinkage on settlements are examined.

  • In recent years, intensive rainfall has occurred with increasing frequency due to climate change, and has had an effect on slope failure. Such rainfall is intense and occurs repeatedly. During the rainfall, most of the water flows along the slope face, but some seeps into the soil, inducing surface failure of the slope. In this study, the infiltration characteristics of intensive rainfall are analyzed under various conditions to evaluate its effect on slope stability, using the Finite Element Method. As a results of this study, the shorter rainfall period and the more rainfall repetition number, the bigger effect of rainfall infiltration is and although the duration of rainfall is short, infiltration effect of rainfall is necessary to be considered on slope stability.

  • Recent increase of large scale construction near costal area has also increased the application of soft ground treatment. As a result, solidification with cement and lime which increases stability and durability of soils, is frequently used for surface layer stabilization in soft ground site. While stabilization of very soft clay with high plasticity and compressibility has widely been studied, studies on silty clay with low plasticity and compressibility are relatively rare. In this study, after stabilizing low plasticity silty clay of Songdo area with cement and lime under various water contents, mixing ratio, and curing time, uniaxial compression test and plate load test were performed. Strength properties from both tests were considerably consistent. And trackability of construction equipment on the treated surface layer of dredged land was estimated. Finally, optimum mixing condition for Songdo silty clay was proposed.

  • The engineering characteristics of natural sediments containing diatom microfossils have been investigated for their abnormal deformation and strength behavior for a few decades. The presence of disk or hollow shape diatoms causes low compressibility, high hydraulic conductivity, and high shear strength of sediments. Some of these unusual differences show the characteristic of diatom owing to the interlocking of large interparticle porosity and angular particles. This phenomenon implies the possible use of diatom as modification materials to change the engineering performance of soil mixtures. This paper describes the engineering characteristics of diatom-kaolin mixture to investigate the engineering properties of diatom modified soils using conventional geotechnical tests and elastic and electromagnetic wave propagation tests. Experimental test results show the performance improvement by increasing diatom contents and the performance degradation by the breakage of interlocking between diatom particles under high effective stress.

  • The coefficient of consolidation of clay deposit is one of the most important properties in the design of ground improvement. The in-situ value of $c_h$ is generally estimated by pore pressure dissipation using piezocone. Many researchers have suggested theoretical formula for its estimation. This study attempts to find out the validity of the existing theoretical formula in Korea and to find out the characteristics of $c_h$ related to the mechanical properties of clay. Piezocone tests and laboratory tests were performed at the site of pilot project of ground improvement at Yangsan-Mulgeum, Gyeongnam. Comparison of the estimated values of $c_h$using piezocone tests results and those from laboratory consolidation tests are carried out. Results show that Torstensson(cylindrical cavity theory) and Teh & Houlsby solutions derive similar values of $c_h$. And $c_h$ from oedometer test shows values similar to the above two methods. The value from either of the above two methods[Torstensson(cylindrical) or Teh & Houlsby] is recommended to be used as $c_h$.
