  • A gerotor can be manufactured in a miniature size because it has a high discharge per cycle and a simple structure. Gerotors are widely used for the lubrication oil of an engine and as the hydraulic source of an automatic transmission. Recently, improvements in fuel efficiency and noise reduction have come to the fore in the automobile industry, and it has been necessary for better fuel efficiency to continuously improve the flow rate and noise of internal gear pumps through the optimal design of the gerotor and port shape. In this study, gerotors were generated based on the equations derived for a lobe shape with multiple profiles (ellipse 1-elliptical involute-ellipse 2). The ranges of the design parameters were considered to prevent a cusp and loop. In addition, the optimal lobe shape was obtained by determining the influence of the lobe shape on the performances (flow rate, irregularity, etc.), according to the values of the design parameters.

Thermodynamic Energy Balance Analysis of Underground Lined Rock Caverns (LRC) for Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) (복공식 지하 압축공기에너지 저장공동의 열역학적 에너지수지 분석)

  • In this paper, we performed thermodynamic energy balance analysis of the underground lined rock cavern for compressed air energy storage (CAES) using the results of multi-phase heat flow analysis to simulate complex groundwater-compressed air flow around the cavern as well as heat transfer to concrete linings and surrounding rock mass. Our energy balance analysis demonstrated that the energy loss for a daily compression and decompression cycle predominantly depends on the energy loss by heat conduction to the concrete linings and surrounding rock mass for a sufficiently air-tight system with low permeability of the concrete linings. Overall energy efficiency of the underground lined rock caverns for CAES was sensitive to air injection temperature, and the energy loss by heat conduction can be minimized by keeping the air injection temperature closer to the ambient temperature of the surroundings. In such a case, almost all the heat loss during compression phase was gained back in a subsequent decompression phase. Meanwhile, the influence of heat conductivity of the concrete linings to energy efficiency was negligible.

  • Non-Newtonian fluid mechanics takes charge of an important role in the oil industries. Especially in the oil well drilling process, the drilling fluid such as mud keeps the drill bit cool and clean during drilling, with suspending drill cuttings and lubricating a drill bit. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of fluid mud rheological properties to predict different characteristics of non-Newtonian fluid in the mud mixing tank on offshore drilling platforms. In this paper, ANSYS fluent package was used for the simulation to solve the hydrodynamic force and to evaluate mud mixing time. Prediction of the power consumption and the pumping effectiveness has been presented with different operating fluid models as Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid. The comparison between Newtonain mud model and non-Newtonian mud model is confirmed by the CFD simulation method of drilling mud mixing tank. The results present useful information for the design of the drilling mud mixing tanks and provide some guidance on the use of CFD tool for such non-Newtonian fluid flow.

A Experimental Study on the Performance of Climate Control Seats Using the Discharge Port of the Shape of Nozzle (노즐 형태의 토출구를 이용한 냉난방 시트 성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Research for climate control seats is being vigorously pursued because requests for passenger's thermal comfort are increasing. Recently, thermoelectric devices have been applied to automotive seats for both cooling and heating operations. The climate control seats using thermoelectric devices can rapidly control the air temperature passing through the devices and directly affect the thermal comfort of passengers. The performance characteristics of the climate control seats were analyzed by experiments for two different types of a leather covered seat and a mesh applied seat. Experimental results show that the cooling and heating performance for the mesh applied seat by using the discharge port of the shape of nozzle was improved significantly in comparison with that for the leather covered seat. The variation of temperature between the inlet air and the outlet air of the climate control seat for the enhanced mesh applied type was by $-3.5^{\circ}C$ at cooling mode, and was by $15.0^{\circ}C$ at heating mode, after about 30 minutes, respectively. Also, it is possible to provide rapid thermal comfort to passengers sitting on the seat in the vehicle cabin by using the proposed climate control seat.

Buildability of 3D Printed Concrete Structures at Various Nozzle Speeds and Aspect Ratios (노즐이동속도와 변장비에 따른 3D 프린팅 콘크리트 구조물의 시공성)

  • In this study, an experimental study on the buildability of the structure using the developed printing materials and equipment was performed. Experimental variables included the moving speed of nozzles(=80 and 100mm/s), the revolutions per minute (RPM) of screw in discharge buckets, and the aspect ratio(=1.67 and 5.00) reflecting wall length of the structures. Buildability of the 3D printed concrete structures was analyzed based on the maximum decomposition layer and collapse patterns of the structures according to the experimental variables. The nozzle movement speed of 80mm/s and the aspect ratio of 1.67 were favorable for 3D printing in this study. The collapse process of structure due to uneven layer decomposition was also analyzed through the relative displacement measurement of the lower part of the structure during printing.

Development of antibacterial PLA fiber to relieve atopy irritation (아토피완화용 PLA 항균사 개발)

  • PLA 섬유는 폴리머의 주성분이 옥수수에서 추출한 모노머를 중합한 화학섬유가 아닌 인체친화적인 식물성 소재이며 생분해성이 좋은 친환경 소재로 최근 주목받고 있는 섬유소재이다. 본 연구에서는 아토피완화용 여러 섬유 구조체 개발에서 사용되는 섬유소재중 PLA 원사에 항균성 물질을 혼입하여 PLA 항균사 제조를 위한 연구를 수행하였다. PLA Grade의 점도가 낮아질수록 Grade별 용융 지수값은 차이를 나타내지만 방사온도 $230^{\circ}C$를 변곡점으로 하여 용융점도가 급격히 변하였으며, 특히 방사온도 $240^{\circ}C$의 경우 용융지수가 100을 넘어가고 폴리머의 색깔이 황갈색을 띄어 폴리머의 열분해가 많이 일어났을 것으로 판단되었다. PLA의 적정 방사온도 구간은 $210{\sim}225^{\circ}C$ 구간이 최적이며 그 이상에서는 Color 변화 및 물성 저하가 나타나는 것으로 판단되었다. 항균성 PLA 섬유를 제조하기 위하여 피톤치드계 유기항균제를 이용하였으며, 피톤치드에 기능성 엘라스토머를 사용하여 Capsulation을 진행하였다. 이러한 유기항균제 Powder의 경우 비중이 낮아 표면적로 인하여 마스터배치 칩을 만드는 공정에서 잘 혼합되지 않는 문제점이 발생하였으나, 피톤치드의 함량을 조절하여 PLA와의 마스터배치 칩 제조를 시험하였다. 압출온도와 토출량, Screw 조건(Mixing, Zone)을 시험하여 적정 조건을 설정하였다. 항균사 PLA 섬유는 Sheath/Core 복합방사 형태와 단독사 형태의 2가지 Type을 제조하였다. Sheath/Core 복합방사 폴리머 구성은 Sheath부에 PLA항균사, Core부에 PLA 또는 저융점 PET를 사용하였다. Core부의 폴리머는 제사성에 큰 영향을 미치지 않았으나, 항균 마스터배치의 함량이 증가할수록 Pack압 상승이 급격히 일어나는 단점이 나타났다. 항균제 5% 정도가 혼입되어 있는 경우에 2.1 이상의 정균활성치와 99.8% 정도의 정균감소율 성능을 나타내었다. PLA 단독사의 경우, 항균제 최적 함량은 3% 이상으로 정균활성치 5.5 이상, 정균감소율 99.9%의 우수한 항균특성을 나타내었다.

Temperature control of the Rework-system using fuzzy PID controller (퍼지 PID 제어기에 의한 리워크 시스템의 온도제어)

  • Rework systems are the equipment used to install or remove semiconductor chips with BGA or SMD forms in printed circuit boards. The rework systems have hot air outlets. At the outlets, precise temperature control is needed to avoid heat shock. The aim of this paper was to suggest a new controller for temperature control at the hot air outlets. The suggested controller was a fuzzy PID controller. The fuzzy PID controllers were composed of TSK fuzzy rules and had outstanding ability for nonlinear systems control. This paper reports the design algorithm of fuzzy PID controllers, and the design process of the fuzzy PID controller for the temperature control of the outlets. Temperature control experiments were performed to verify the ability of the suggested controller. As a result, the RMS of the proposed method is 9.44 and the general method is 15.88. The experiments showed that the temperatures at the outlet using the suggested fuzzy PID controller followed the desired ones better than the commonly used PID controller.

Study on the Swirling Motion Effect of Ejector Performance (회전 운동이 이젝터 성능에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • This paper aims to examine the effect of rotational fluid motion about the efficiency of the gas - liquid ejector, which is a core unit in a ship equilibrium water treatment system. The ejector is a device for injecting ozone into ship equilibrium by the negative pressure generated by exchange of momentum between water and ozone. The existing ejector ejects the driving fluid with a simple form. In this paper, however, a rotation induction device is applied to the driving nozzle so that the driving fluid can be rotated and injected. To investigate the flow characteristics by the rotational movement of the driving fluid, CFD was used. The pressure and flow rate of the driving fluid, the negative pressure and suction flow rate of the suction fluid in the suction part, and the discharge pressure were predicted. On the basis of the results, the efficiency of the ejector using the rotation induction system was 22.25%, which was about 1.7% better than that of the existing ejector. Finally, to verify the feasibility of the CFD, an experiment was conducted on the ejector using the rotation induction device and the results were similar to those of the CFD.

Numerical Analysis on the Cavitation Performance of a Seawater Cooling Pump (해수냉각 펌프의 캐비테이션 성능에 대한 수치해석)

  • In this study, a centrifugal seawater cooling pump was analyzed to investigate its cavitation behavior over different operating flow rates. 3D two-phase simulations were carried out with ANSYS-CFX commercial code. The $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence and Rayleigh-Plesset cavitation models were employed in the simulations. A head drop characteristics curves for three discharge rates was built based on numerical predictions. At higher flow rates, the impeller was more vulnerable to bubble cavitation. The 3 % head drop points of the pump working at 0.7Q, Q, and 1.3Q (Q: design flow rate) corresponded with NPSHa 1.21 m, 1.83 m, and 3.45 m, respectively. The volume of vapor bubbles was estimated and cavitation locations were anticipated to visualize the development of the cavity within the impeller. Moreover, the distribution of pressure coefficient and a blade loading chart are specifically presented, bringing out the harmful impacts of cavitation on the pump operation.

  • An experimental study was conducted to observe the spray characteristics for different flow rates and rotating speeds of a rotating fuel nozzle of a slinger combustor. The water spray ejected from the nozzle orifice was visualized using a high-speed camera and a light source. It was confirmed that the atomization was improved, as the flow rate decreased and rotating speed increased. The characteristic maps for the spray characteristics and performance parameters showed that the aerodynamic Weber number and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio were associated with the liquid primary breakup, and the liquid-air momentum flux ratio and Rossby number were closely correlated with the liquid ejection mode.
