This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of condensed molasses soluble (CMS) treatment on the mineralization of N, chemical properties and soil microbial population under the incubation condition with unsaturated water content during the 7 weeks at $25^{\circ}C$ in the different levels of CMS application. The results indicated that the total nitrogen content of soil was increased with increasing application rate of CMS and this trend was maintained up to 7 weeks. With CMS treatment content of $NH_4-N$ was gradually decreased. However, the content of $NO_3-N$ in the soil was gradually increased with incubation time due to the nitrification under the unsturated water condition. The CMS treatment increased the microbial populations such as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi, which may be due to the availability of more nutrients such as amino acids, sugars and other minor elements from CMS. The pH of soil was found to be reduced by the addition of CMS, Whereas, electrical conduvtivity of soil was correspondingly increased with increasing application rate of CMS.
To maximize the production of glucose oxidase by Aspergillus niger KUF-04 isolated from a soil, the cultivation conditions and nutrient sources for the enzyme production were studied. The results obtained were as fellows: 1. The optimum temperature, pH of the medium, and cultivation time for the enzyme formation were found to be 28-34$^{\circ}C$, 7.0-8.0 and 40 hours, respectively. 2. The best carbon source was proved to be glucose and its most effective concentration was 15 percent. 3. Ammonium sulfate was the best nitrogen source as compared with the other inorganic and organic nitrogen sources tested. Its optimum concentration for the glucose oxidase production was 0.02 percent. 4. As mineral sources, 0.05% of Mag cesium sulfate 7-hydrate and 0.02% of Potassium phosphate, monobasic seemed to be necessary to further increase the level of the enzyme production.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of high concentrations of salts in soil on the growth, yield, quality, photosynthetic rate, and mineral uptake of tomato ('House Momotaro') in pot cultivation. The growth of tomato such as plant height, top plant weight and root weight decreased as the concentrations of salts in soils increased. Yield decreased by 31% and 41% in EC 5.0 and $7.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively compared with the salt concentration of EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. Yield reduction was caused by low mean weight and number of fruit if at high salt concentration in soil, and affected by low photosynthetic rate and water potential in leaf, The rate of blossom-end rot was highest (16.7%) in EC $7.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and increased as the concentrations of salts in soils increased. The contents of soluble solids and titratable acids showed a tendency to increase with increasing the concentrations of salts in soils. Photosynthetic rate, water potential and stomatal conductance in leaf decreased as the salt concentration in soil increased. The higher the salt concentration in soil, the lower the mineral uptake such as T-N, P, K, Ca and Mg but, the higher the content of Na.
Among 120 microorganisms isolated from soil, KF-67 was the best producer of flocculant and was examined for flocculating ability in the kaolin clay and CaCl2 suspension. KF-67 was identified to be a species belong to the genus Agrobacterium sp. The influence of components of the culture medium for flocculant production by Agrobacterium sp. KF-67 was studied. The favorable carbon and inorganic nitrogen source for production of the flocculant were glucose and NH4NO3 and their addition concentrations were 2% and 0.1%, respectively. Addition of the organic nitrogen such as yeast extract, peptone and inorganic salt such as CaCO3 significantly increased the production of flocculant. These result indicated that the production of flocculant by Agrobacterium sp. was significantly affected by both organic nitrogen and inorganic salt. The components of the optimum culture medium were 2% glucose, 0.1% NH4NO3, 0.01% yeast extract, 0.01% peptone, 0.04% CaCO3, 0.03% NaCl in initial pH 7.5 when cultured with rotary shaker controlled at 3$0^{\circ}C$ and 120 rpm. Under the optimum culture medium, flocculant production was highly improved about 76% than that isolation medium.
This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of root medium formulations on growth and nutrient uptake of hot pepper 'Knockgwang' in 72-cell plug trays. To achieve this, the nine root media were formulated by adjusting blending rate of perlite (PL) to coir (CO), peatmoss (PM) or coir+peatmoss (5:5, v/v, COPM). Then, the growth characteristics and tissue nutrient contents were determined at 35 and 70 days after sowing. The elevated blending rate of PL to CO increased fresh and dry weight of hot pepper at 35 days after sowing. The treatments of 20% in blending rate of PL to PM or that of 0% to COPM produced the highest fresh and dry weight among perlite treatments of PM or COPM. The results of crop growth at 70 days after sowing also showed similar trends to those of 35 days after sowing. The elevated blending rate of PL to CO or PM decreased tissue $P_2O_5$ and K contents and increased Ca and Mg contents at 35 days after sowing, With the equal blending rate of perlite, the plant tissue grown in CO had higher K contents and lower N, Ca and Mg contents than those in PM and COPM. The elevated blending rate of perlite in three organic matter also decreased tissue $P_2O_5$ and K contents at 70 days after sowing, but Ca and Mg contents were the highest in the treatment of 20% PL in CO, 40% PL in PM and 40% PL in COPM among perlite treatments in each organic matter.
This research was conducted to determine the effect of soil pH change followed by leaching with ground water on crop growth, yield and nutrient uptake of strawberry. Treatments were leaching with ground water (A), hydrated lime application of dissolved portion in $500g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ solution followed by leaching (B), application of $Al_2SO_4$ solution with the concentration of $0.75g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ followed by leaching (C), pH elevation by (B) followed by pH lowering by (C), then leaching (D). Soil samples taken before experiment had 6.0 in soil pH. But the pH of all treatments taken after pH changes and leaching were in the range from 5.8 to 6.2 without statistical differences among treatments. Electrical conductivity of soils taken before experiment was $1.82dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and those of (A), (B), (C), and (D) were 1.65, 1.72, 1.71 and $1.83dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. The plant height in treatment (C) was 20.4 cm at 80 days after transplanting which was the highest among treatments tested. The other growth characteristics did not show statistical differences among treatments. Tissue contents of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and B in treatment (C) were higher than those of other treatments at 80 days after transplanting. The treatment (C) had the highest number of special sizes and fruit weight per 50 plants such as 137 and 3.784 g, respectively. The treatment also had 3.123 kg in total fruit weight and 2,489 kg in marketable fruit weight per 10 are. The treatment (B) also had good results such as 2,820 kg in marketable fruit weight per 10 are.
To determine the possibility of solidified se wage sludge for use as a soil cover material in reclaimed land, the growth of energy crops and soil chemical properties investigated in each experimental plots during 2 years (2010 and 2011). The experimental plots consisted of the mixing with solidified sewage sludge plot (SS50), the covering with solidified sewage sludge plot (SS100), and the original reclaimed land plot (ORL) on reclaimed land for the intended landfill in Sudokwon Landfill Site Management Corporation (SLC). Plant height, measured in the second year (2011), was highest in the Geodae 1 grown at plots treated with solidified sewage sludge. The growth of energy crops cultivated in both SS50 and SS100 were better than in ORL. The contents of organic matter (OM) and total nitrogen (T-N) at both SS50 and SS100 were considerably higher than that of the ORL over 2 years. However, the soil from ORL showed higher salinity with high contents of exchangeable $Na^+$ cation than that of SS50 and SS100 over 2 years. We consider that soil chemical and physical properties on reclaimed land used in this study could be improved by the application of solidified sewage sludge due to following reasons. Firstly, the application of solidified sewage sludge may provide soil nutrients on reclaimed land i.e. the growth of energy crops better than in ORL, resulted in more OM and T-N contents in SS50 and SS100. Secondly, the top layers mixed or covered with solidified sewage sludge on reclaimed land may be prevented the salinity accumulation due to capillary rise to surface soil, and improved the cultivation layer for effectively propagating the rhizomes of energy crops. Thus the solidified sewage sludge may be a great soil cover materials for cultivation of bioenergy crops in reclaimed land.
This study was conducted to find out the optimum cropping system for the stable production of forage crops in the newly reclaimed land located at Gwanghwal region of Saemangum reclaimed land in which the soil is sandy loam (Munpo series). There were two treatments of nitrogen fertilization 20% increment based on the standard fertilization of 150, $200kg\;ha^{-1}$. Whole crop barley as the winter crop sowed on 27 October. After the whole crop barley was harvested at the end of May. Corn and sorghum${\times}$sudangrass as the summer crop sowed at the early of June successively on the same field. Emergence rate the whole crop barley was high while the summer crops were low. Soil salinity was increased during cultivation of summer crops. However, corn and sorghum${\times}$sudangrass were not damaged by salt. Increase of nitrogen fertilization made the growth of cultivation crops good, stem and leaf tended to have a lot of the mineral nutrients at heading stage and silking stage. After experiment, among soil chemical properties pH, content of exchangeable sodium were decreased and content of organic matter, available phosphate were increased. Dry matter yield were showed whole crop barley $13,170kg\;ha^{-1}$ and sorghum${\times}$sudangrass $19,440kg\;ha^{-1}$ by increment of nitrogen fertilization. Therefore, to improve the product and nutrient balance of reclaimed saline land comprehensive soil management should be considered.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of salinity in irrigation water on the growth, yield components, yield and grain quality of rice plant by the pot experiments. Irrigation waters were supplied with control and amended with NaCl at 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, and 7,000 ${\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$ electrical conductivity. A randomized block design was used with four replicates for each treatment and control. As increasing salt concentration, plant height, tiller number, SPAD value, dry weight, content of N, P, and K, ripened grain ratio (%), 1,000 grain weight, and protein content (%) tended to decrease, especially, significant at 3,000 ${\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$ of salt level. Grain yield decreased significantly at all treatments. The percentage of head rice slightly tended to increase as the salt concentration due to the decrease of green kernel. The percentage of green kernel was significantly lower at 3,000 ${\mu}s\;cm^{-1}$ of salt level than the control.
A new biopolymer YU-122 from Metarrhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorok consisting of glucose and galactose was tested for its physical properties and flow behavior characteristics. Xanthan gum showed slightly higher viscosity than biopolymer YU-122. Viscosity of biopolymer YU-122 at various pHs and temperatures was also tested. The viscosity of biopolymer YU-122 was very stable up to pH 11 and $60^{\circ}C$, indicating that it has a great possibility for the application such as food additives, emulsifier, and drug release agents. Flow behavior index (n) from Power Law equation is 0.173. Biopolymer YU-122 solution was a pseudoplastic non-Newtonian fluid, which indicated that it had one or more side chains. When biopolymer YU-122 was used as a emulsifier, it stabilized the emulsion up to 120 hours, which was much better than xanthan gum. The biopolymer YU-122 could form an excellent but less clear film compared with xanthan and pullulan.
