Distribution of heavy metals in soils around the Keum-Jung mine and remediation (금정광산 주변 토양의 중금속 오염현황 및 그 처리 방안)

  • This geochemical study was carried out to find out the distribution of metals and cyanide in the soils around the Keum-Jung abandoned mine. Chemical analysis showed that extractable As contents in the soils near the mine exceeded 15mg/kg, Korean standard of soil contamination for farm land. The Results suggests that As contamination is due to input of tailings in the soils. According to total decomposition of tailings, As was highly concentrated in tailings. The water in a tailings impoundment was changed to acidic and contaminated by metals and sulfate which were released through oxidation of impoundment. Acid mine drainage from the tailings impoundment distribution channels directed to the paddy soils. The proper measures are required to prevent contamination of the soil and water in the vicinity of the Keum-Jung mine.

Distiribution of Metals and Cyanide in Soils and Acid leachate Occurrence around the Daduck mine (다덕광산 주변 토양에서의 금속 및 시안의 분포와 산성침출수 생성)

  • Geochemical study was carried out to find out the distribution of metals and cyanide in soil in the vicinity of the abandoned Daduck mine and the reason for acid mine drainage occurrence in the tailings impoundment. Chemical analysis showed that content of As in soil around tailings exceeded 15mg/kg, Korean standard of soil contamination in the farm land. That means the contamination of soil by As is due to input of tailings. According to total decomposition of tailings, As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and S were highly concentrated in tailings. However the water in tailings impoundment was changed to acidic and contaminated by metals and sulfate because the tailings in the top of the tailings impoundment had been oxidized. Acid mine drainage contaminated the water course in the vicinity of the paddy soils. The proper measures are required to prevent contamination of the soil and water in the vicinity of the Daduck mine.

  • 지하수 개발·이용을 위한 정호심도는 지속적으로 증가하는 추세이다. 이에 따라 보다 깊은 심도에서 또는 특정한 대수층에서의 대수성시험 및 오염방지를 위한 그라우팅 기술이 필요 하다. 기존의 팩커기술이 이를 기술적으로 만족시키고 있지만, 일반적인 정호에서는 경제성과 공정의 복잡성 때문에 적용이 보편화되어 있지 않다. 그러나 bentonite pellet을 이용하여, 간단하고 경제적으로 이 문제를 해결할 수 있다.

  • The significance of soil environment is gradually increased due to the soil and underwater contamination caused by petroleum leak accidents. It requires a high cost and long period for the purification of soil compared with other environmental matrix such as water and air. For this reason, it has been embroiled in a legal conflict to find the pollution source and charge of cleanup. In this study, we analyzed the physical properties and typical additives of jet fuel to search a method that can distinguish kerosene and jet fuel contamination. In particular, the chemical marker in kerosene was visualized by the developer and the additives in jet fuel, such as antioxidant and metal deactivator were detected by GC-MS. This study could be used to judge petroleum source at soil contaminant accident sites.

Investigation on Soil Contamination and Its Remediation System in the Vicinity of Some Metalliferous Mines in Korea (국내 일부 금속광산 주변의 토양오염 조사와 광해방지시스템 연구)

  • 이 연구에서는 국내에 산재되어 있는 금속광산들에 대한 토양환경오염을 조사하고 적절한 환경처리를 위한 기초자료를 제공하기 위하여 대표적인 연-아연광산, 동광산 및 금-은광산을 대상으로 As. Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn 등의 오염규모와 분산정도를 규명하고자 하였다. 연구대상지역으로 삼보 연-아연강산, 달성 동-텅스텐광산 그리고 구봉, 삼광, 금왕 금-은광산을 선정하여 이들 광산 주변에서 토양을 채취하여 화학분석을 실시하였다. 그리고 연속추출법을 이용하여 토양중에 존재하는 중금속의 존재형태를 규명하였으며 화학분해방법에 따른 중금속의 추출정도를 고찰하기 위하여 강산을 이용한 분해방법과 토양환경보전법에 제시된 방법을 비교하였다. 화학분석 결과, 삼보광산 주변의 상부토양 (0-15cm 심도)에서는 평균 11.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Cd, 208 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Cu, 2,700 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Pb, 8,300 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Zn이 검출되었으며 일부 농경지에서는 토양환경보전법의 우려기준을 초과하는 중금속이 검출되어 광산활동에 의한 토양오염이 심각함이 조사되었다. 달성광산 주변 토양에서도 다량의 중금속이 검출되었으며 (평균 4.4 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Cd, 1,950 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Cu, 1,030 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Pb, 419 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g Zn) 특히 As (평균 2,500 $\mu\textrm{g}$/g)의 오염이 심각하였다. 그리고 대표적인 금은광산인 구봉, 삼광 및 금왕광산에서는 광미와 선광장 주변에서 다량의 중금속과 As가 검출되었다. 이 연구 결과, 이들 점오염원에 대한 오염정도가 심각하므로 이를 적절하게 처리할 수 있는 오염복구사업이 실시되어야할 것으로 판단된다.

Towards efficient policies for soil pollution prevention and remediation of contaminated sites in Korea

  • The objectives of this paper are to overview present status of soil pollution in Korea, to review the current policies and management strategies for soil pollution prevention and remediation of contaminated sites, and to suggest some recommendations to be considered toward more efficient policies. Soils in Korea are contaminated mainly by industrial facilities, landfills, underground storage tanks, abandoned/inactive mines, military camps, and other sources. Concentrations of most of soil pollutants were similar to the background levels, except for a few heavily contaminated sites such as industrial sites or abandoned/inactive mines. The Soil Environment Conservation Act (SECA), which was effective from 1995, provides a comprehensive legal framework for both preventing soil pollution and remedying contaminated sites in Korea. The Act includes various management policies such as the designation of standards and soil pollution policy area, soil monitoring networks, management of suspected contamination sources, and extended 'polluter-pays' principle. To make current policies more efficient and reasonable, some policies or strategies such as the establishment of national priority list, more detailed standards, risk-based cleanup goal, fund raise, soil erosion problem, and finally, integrity between soil and groundwater management frameworks may need to be pursued in the long term.
