Analysis of the Correlation between Site Environmental Factors and Tree Ring Growth in Chamaecyparis obtusa Stands in Jeonnam Province (전남 편백림에서의 입지환경요인과 연륜생장량의 상관성 분석)

  • This study verified the correlations between vegetation factors, such as the number of individual species and species diversity, and soil factors in Chamaecyparis obtusa (CO) stands in Jeollanam-do. Also, the site environmental factors that affect the annual growth of CO ring width were analyzed. Positive correlations were found between the species diversity index and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), available phosphate, and exchangeable $K^+$ (P<0.01). In addition, strong positive correlations were also found between the number of species that appeared in the study site and CEC, available phosphorus, exchangeable $K^+$ and exchangeable $Mg^{2+}$ (P<0.01). Tree ring growth showed strong correlations with the nutrient holding capacity and fertility of soil, including available phosphate, exchangeable $K^+$, CEC, and electrical conductivity (P<0.01). The explanatory variables of tree ring growth in CO were composed of exchangeable $K^+$, organic matter content, and soil pH. The regression model had a high level of explanatory power, 74.4%. In this model, the annual growth of CO ring width increased when exchangeable $K^+$ and organic matter content were higher but decreased when soil pH was lower. According to the analysis, it is found that the annual growth of CO ring width was significantly affected by soil fertility, including available phosphate, exchangeable $K^+$, CEC, and electrical conductivity. In addition, the soil fertility of CO stands seems to be significantly affected by the supply of fallen leaves from the understory vegetation of CO.

Soil Chemical Properties and Plant Mineral Contents in Plastic Film House in Southern Part of Korea (남부지방(南部地方) 시설재배지(施設栽培地) 토양의 화학성(化學性)과 작물의 양분함량(養分含量))

  • Chemical properties of soils and mineral contents in plants grown at seventy one regions located in southern part of Korea were surveyed to obtain the basic information for sustainable management of plastic film house soils. The averaged soil chemical properties showed optimum levels in pH, organic matter, available boron, manganese, zinc contents, whereas available phosphate and exchangeable rations were highly accumulated. Available phosphate showed highly positive correlation with continuous cropping period. The contents of phosphate, potassium, calcium, and magnesium in the top soils were ranged from 912(Pusan)~1.796mg (Masan) ; $1.52(Pusan){\sim}2.93cmol^+$(Sunchon) ; $7.44(Masan){\sim}18.58cmol^+$(Changweon) ; $2.82(Changnyong){\sim}6.24cmol^+/kg$(Changweon), respectively. There were high levels of phosphorus and potassium in the leaves of plastic film house plants of pepper, cucumber, pimento, chrysanthemum, and carnation. And calcium and magnesium were more than two fold high in fruiting vegetables than flowering plants showing antagonistic utilization against potassium.

Site and Growth Characteristics of Kalopanax septemlobus Growing at Mt. Joongwang in Pyungchang-gun, Kangwon-do (강원도(江原道) 평창군(平昌郡) 중왕산(中王山) 지역(地域) 음나무의 입지환경(立地環境) 및 생장특성(生長特性))

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the site and growth characteristics of Kalopanax septemlobus mixed with other hardwoods growing at Mt. Joongwang area located in Pyungchang-gun, Kangwon-do. The K. septemlobus stands were located at 1,000m to 1,200m in altitude, steep slope, and ridge-slope areas with aspects facing northeast to northwest. The K. septemlobus stands showed deep A soil layer with high soil moisture and soil nutrients. Major over-story species were Quercus mongolica, Acer pictum, Acer pseudosieboldianum and Carpinus cordata. The herbaceous vegetation was predominantly consisted with Pimpinella brachycarpa, Meehania urticifolia, Ainsliaea acerifloia and Polystichum species. The annual mean diameter increment of K. septemlobus was 2.4mm/year, with high diameter growth at lower altitude, south aspect and valley areas.

GIS application on weed control of Eleocharis kuroguwai in lowland rice field in Korea (GIS를 이용한 논 잡초 올방개의 방제연구)

  • The weed survey in lowland rice fields through Korea was conducted in 1992 to determine a change of the weed communities based on different regions, soil types, planting methods, and cultural practices. GIS was applied to identify a spatial analysis of predominant weed species in specific region. On behalf of vegetatine analysis such as absolute and relative density, absolute and relative frequency, importance value, and summed dominance ratio(SDR), there was highly dominant with a perennial weed species, Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi over whole country. However, in particular it was most predominant at southem area of Gyunggi province in Korea. Thus, rice farmers of this area have to introduce a specific comperhensive control strategy against this predominant weed species.

Amino Acids in Humic Acids Extracted from Organic By-product Fertilizers (유기질 부산물 비료에서 추출한 부식산 중 아미노산 특성)

  • Most of total nitrogen in the surface soil exists in organic forms, of which amino acid-N is the major fraction. By-product fertilizers provide soil with humic substances, and humic acid is an essential component of humus. Amino acids(AAs) are easily converted to inorganic-N forms and thus play an important role in N fertility. This experiment was conducted to investigate the contents and distributions of AAs in humic acids which were extracted from the commercial by-product fertilizers of different composting materials. Total contents of AAs in humic acids ranged from 1.2 to 5.6%, of which neutral AAs were the highest with ranges of 0.8~4.5%. AAs contents in fertilizers composted from the plant residues such as leaf litter, sawdust and bark were in an order of neutral>acidic>basic AAs. In contrast, those from animal wastes, such as poultry and pig manures, were in an order of neutral>basic>acidic AAs. Distributions of total, acidic and neutral AAs were in the respective order of leaf litter>sawdust>pig manure>poultry manure>peat, bark>sawdust>leaf litter>peat and leaf litter>sawdust>bark>peat. Distributions of the basic AAs were in the reversed order of the acidic AAs. In bark fertilizer with increasing compost maturity, contents of the acidic AAs were increased in compensation for the decreases in those of neutral and basic AAs. Results demonstrated that distributions of amino acids in humic acid of by-product fertilizers were different from composting raw materials and degrees of humification.

Reducing Nitrogen Fertilization Level of Rice (Oryza sativa L.) by Silicate Application in Korean Paddy Soil (논토양에서 규산질 비료 시용에 의한 질소 시비 저감수준 평가)

  • Silicate (Si) fertilizers are well-known for soil amendment and to improve rice productivity as well as nitrogen efficiency. In this study, we investigated the possible reduction level of nitrogen fertilization for rice cultivation by amending Si fertilizer application. Field experiments were carried out to evaluate the productivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) on a silt loam soil, where three levels of nitrogen (0, 110 and $165kg\;ha^{-1}$) were selected and Si fertilizer as a slag type was applied at 0, 1 and 2 times of the recommendation level (available $SiO_2\;130mg\;kg^{-1}$). Application of Si fertilizer increased significantly the rice yield and nitrogen efficiency. With increasing N uptake of rice, 1 and 2 times of recommended levels of Si fertilization could decrease nitrogen application level to about 76 and $102kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ to produce the target yield, the maximum yield in the non-Si amended treatment. Silicate fertilizer improved soil pH and significantly increased available phosphate and Si contents. Conclusively, the Si fertilizer could be a good alternative source for soil amendment, restoring the soil nutrient balance and to reduce the nitrogen application level in rice cultivation.

  • Detailed information on soil characteristics is of great importance for the use and conservation of soil resources that are essential for human welfare and ecosystem sustainability. This paper introduces soil inventory of Korea focusing on national soil database establishment, information systems, use, and future direction for natural resources management. Different scales of soil maps surveyed and soil test data collected by RDA (Rural Development Administration) were computerized to construct digital soil maps and database. Soil chemical properties and heavy metal concentrations in agricultural soils including vulnerable agricultural soils were investigated regularly at fixed sampling points. Internet-based information systems for soil and agro-environmental resources were developed based on 'National Soil Survey Projects' for managing soil resources and for providing soil information to the public, and 'Agroenvironmental Change Monitoring Project' to monitor spatial and temporal changes of agricultural environment will be opened soon. Soils data has a great potential of further application in estimation of soil carbon storage, water capacity, and soil loss. Digital mapping of soil and environment using state-of-the-art and emerging technologies with a pedometrics concept will lead to future direction.

Study on Determine the Amount of Nitrogen to be Applied at Tillering and Reproductive Stages of Rice (수도(水稻)에 대(對)한 분얼비(分蘖肥)와 수비량(穗肥量) 결정(結定)에 관(關)한 연구)

  • 1. Based upon an fertilizer experiment done in a farmer's field, with a medium maturity variety, Jinheung, (in 1969) a method of determination of nitrogen to be additionally given, at tillering and reproductive stages was studied. In this experiment, four kilograms of nitrogen per 0.1 ha was applied as basal dressing to all experimental treatments at transplanting time. 2. The application of nitrogen at the reproductive stage of paddy increased the yield remarkably and cut down the amount of nitrogen to be given at the tillering stage. The yield of paddy, 670kg/0.1 ha obtained by the application of 6.82kg N/0.1 ha at the reproductive stage far exceeded the yield, 644kg/0.1ha obtained when over 8kg N/0.1ha of N is applied at tillering stage alone. This emphasizes the importance of nitrogen top dressing at the reproductive stage. 3. As the amount of nitrogen to be given at both stages, reproductive and tillering, would be the reflection of soil fertility of the field, a correlative study between the amount of nitrogen to be given at both stages and soil analysis is suggested to be undertaken. 4. A study on the relationship between the amount of fertilizer to be given at stages different growth and yield components is suggested to be undertaken for the purpose of establishing a better fertilizer use technique.

A Study on Nitrogen Forms in Forest Soils (삼림토양(森林土壤)의 질소(窒素)의 존재형태(存在形態)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • The composition of the nitrogen forms of the organic layer and mineral soil horizons of 8 differing soil type was measured to find a clue to elucidate the problem on the fertility and nitrogen availabilities of forest soils. The ratio of inorganic $N(NH_4-N+NO_3-N)$ to total N was very low in every 0 layer and its maximum was only about 2%. And the inorganic N concentration of every mineral soil horizon was low, and the maximum of its rate to N was 3.7% in surface horizon and about 4.1% in lower horizon. Organic N form of O layer were characterized by the decrease of aminoacid-N, and the increased of hexosamine-N and amide-N according to the advance of decomposing process. The ranges of hydrolyzable-N of every flesh litter, F and H layer of the selected soils were about 80-90% and they- were hardly affected by the differences of tree species and decomposing process. The organic N form of every litter was similar and it was follows : aminoacid-N was not abundant and it ranges were about 40-50%, more than half of hydrolyzable-N. The hexosamine-N was eery poor and it ranged to only 2-7%. The amide-N teas low and about 10-23%. No distinguished difference was seen between the organic N forms of the O layer and surface horizon of dry and wet soils in brown forest soils.

Effect of Organic Materials Use Recommendation System on Soil N Mineralization and Rice Productivity in Organic Paddy (유기자원 사용처방 기준 적용에 따른 토양 질소 무기화 및 유기 벼 생산성)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the field application of the developed recommendation system in organic rice (Oriza sativa L.) paddy and to investigate the mineral nitrogen content in soil and rice productivity. According to the developed system, hairy vetch (HV), rye+rapeseed oil cake (R+OC), rapeseed oil cake (OC) for only basal fertilization (OC-B), OC for split application (OC-S), pig manure compost (PMC), and chemical fertilizer (CHM) were applied to paddy soil at the rate of 107~133 kg N/ha. Results were followed, unhulled rice yield of OC-S (111%), OC-B (110), R+OC (106), HV (101), and PMC (96) were no significantly different with CHM (100). Also there was positive correlation (R2=0.803*) between unhulled rice yield and cumulative inorganic N in soil. For nitrogen use efficiency of rice, OC-B, OC-S, and R+OC were not significantly different with CHM. In conclusions, the developed organic materials use recommendation system was effective for organic rice productivity. It could be useful for organic farmer to apply the organic materials use recommendation system for rice.
