  • Old national Road No. 59 that connects Danyang and Gagok has 35 dangerous cut slopes. It is relatively narrow and has a poor alignment. The torrential rains in 2002 and 2006 has caused numerous slope collapses, landslides and road settlements in this area. The old road's high risk level lead to the planning and construction of a new national road. During the construction of the new road in December 2006, the right side of Dugcheon Tunnel entrance has collapsed and tension cracks were observed on the district road above the tunnel. In order to determine the cause of failure, intensive field investigation and monitoring cracks were performed together with Lower Hemisphere Projection Analysis, Limit Equilibrium Analysis and Finite Difference Analysis.

  • The National Park Service is making efforts to create a safe environment by installing rockfall prevention facilities (rockfall prevention nets, fences, and Piam tunnels) in areas at risk of falling rocks. However, the occurrence of falling rocks is increasing every year due to torrential rains caused by climate change, abnormal temperatures in winter, and aging of the ground, and the need to improve the existing rock risk area management plan has emerged. In this study, a pilot area at risk of falling rocks was selected for the Hwanggol district of Chiaksan National Park among Korean national parks, and rockfall analysis was performed using the Rockfall program, and monitoring was conducted by applying a countermeasure method combined with the measurement system to the pilot area. Through this, a rockfall management plan was proposed for continuous management and monitoring of rockfall.

  • Recently, due to adjacent excavation work such as new buildings and common tunnel expansion concentrated around the urban railway, deformation of the underground box and tunnel structure of the urban railway built underground has occurred, and as a result, repair and reinforcement work is frequently carried. In addition, the subway is responsible for large-scale transportation, so ensuring the safety and drivability of underground structures is very important. Accordingly, an automated measurement system is being introduced to manage the safety of underground box structures. However, there is no analysis of structural damage vulnerabilities caused by subsidence or uplift of underground box structures. In this study, we aim to analyze damage vulnerabilities for safety monitoring of underground box structures. In addition, we intend to analyze major core monitoring locations by modeling underground box structures through numerical analysis. Therefore, we would like to suggest sensor installation locations and damage vulnerable areas for safety monitoring of underground box structures in the future.

  • For the electrification of the existing railways, the security of the restriction boundary of building with mechanistic stability research on the antiquated tunnel must be accomplished essentially. If the tunnel don't secure its restriction boundary of building, the reconstruction based on improvement of tunnel alignment are generated and its surveying data are required. The precise surveying was conducted with the same coordinate system for three tunnels of Youngdong tramline, and the restriction boundary of building of the straight and curve section were analyzed effectively by acquiring the data of profile and cross section, profile rail-height, rail-grade, cross tunnel height, and restriction boundary of building. This study is presented for valuation data of the stability of the electrification design to construct and analyze restriction boundary of building, which compared with the drawing and its existing design using profile and cross section. After this, it is interoperable to increase the development of real-time monitoring system on the tunnel structures.

  • Recently, the development of underground space has been accelerated with rapid urbanization, and it is significantly important for safe construction to accurately understand the geological conditions of the section when excavating rocks. In this paper, a boring alignment tracking and geological exploration system have been developed to identify the geological conditions beyond the excavation face by utilizing a MSP method that bores a large empty hole to reduce blast-induced vibration. The major advantage of the proposed exploration system is that we can obtain the ground condition of 50 m ahead of the excavation face through exploration along blast cut-holes drilled for the NATM tunnel construction. In addition, we introduce several case histories regarding the assessment of the geological conditions beyond the tunnel face by monitoring the inside of large empty holes using the proposed hole exploration system.

  • The study area is located in Hyeonseo-myeon and Andeok-myeon of Cheongsong-gun, Korea around the Yeongcheon dam waterway tunnel, and in this paper, it is analyzed whether the groundwater level is recovered or not compared to groundwater level before waterway tunnel construction by measuring the groundwater level of 156 wells which were installed in areas near and away from the waterway tunnel. From September 2017 to August 2018, the groundwater level of the well was measured at least once a month, and as a result of groundwater level observation survey, the groundwater level of wells distributed in the directly affected zone by the waterway tunnel is relatively lower than that of the indirectly affected zone apart from the waterway tunnel. These results are estimated to be predominantly affected by the effect of waterway tunnel acting on geologic discontinuities rather than by terrain conditions, i.e. groundwater flows being leaked to the waterway tunnel through direct or indirect channels. Continuous monitoring and further investigation will be required to maintain groundwater facilities and preserve groundwater environments in the future.

  • In order to prevent the fragmentation of animal habitat due to road construction, the most widely applied solution is building animal passes worldwide. In Korea, animal passes were introduced in the early 2000s, and through trial and error, the national guidelines for them and their design standards were published in 2010. These were criticized by politicians because of their relative inefficiency considering their high construction cost and their lack of animal usage. This study investigated the extent to which animals used the facilities. For this study, two types of animal passes, eco-bridges and ecoducts, were considered and the test sites were chosen from the Baekdu Mountains. The animal usage data was captured using infra-red CCTV cameras. The results showed that various types of animals used eco-bridges and ecoducts. Interestingly various types of birds were captured by cameras and endangered animals were also in them. The season, weather, and their surrounded vegetation also had effects on their usages. The infrared CCTV allowed detailed captures of animals but the electricity shortage was one disadvantage. During the last decades, a number of eco-bridges were constructed throughout the country and now we need to focus on their monitoring and maintenance for their successful efficiency and application.

  • In South Korea, there are a large number of tunnels because of the mountainous terrain, and to overcome this characteristics, lengths of tunnels are more longer than existing tunnels. The need to improvement current tunnel management contents is giving rise for accidents in tunnel section is continuously increased although lots of efforts to reduce the accidents. Conventionally, disaster prevention have been focused on the Tunnel Management Systems, tunnel operators generally tend to depend on CCTV images for most contents of detailed traffic flow managing. In this paper, investigation about current Tunnel Management Systems contents using IPA survey was conducted, and Priority Improvement Contents(Accident Situation Management Support, 2nd Accident Management Support, Traffic Flow Monitoring), which importance are high, but satisfaction are low, are deducted. Also, CCTV images, lack intuitive understanding, are judged as a main cause of low satisfaction of those contents. To overcome those limitations of the existing Tunnel Management Systems, this study sought to develop a technology for the synthesis of road images to derive traffic information from synthesis images, and the contents improvement stragegy is established. Tunnel operators-oriented satisfaction survey on new contents was carried out, and scored 4.2 on a 5-point scale. This has confirmed that the availability of new contents and at this stage, with pushing ahead of long-tunnels and undersea tunnels construction, politic applications are expected.

  • Korea's long underground roads are being promoted around the metropolitan city center to realize advanced transportation networks. Many disaster prevention facilities are applied to secure fire safety of the closed and long-distance underground roads. As the facility response and fire suppression subjects are unclear, additional human and material damages from fire spread are inevitable. Therefore, in this study, we developed a remote automatic fire extinguishing system that uses the fire extinguishing water inside the fire hydrant to monitor the CCTV in the management room and sprays it directly to the fire site through automatic control. The design application method was studied through the performance improvement that can be put into practical use.
