To explore on the defense strategies against hervivory of five Viburnum species, morphological characteristics of the leaf, leaf domatia structure and the number, herbivores insects and mites on the leaves, collected from the trees growing in Wonju-si, Pyeungchang-gun, Taebaek-si, Taean-gun, Bonghwa-gun, Sancheung-gun and Jinju-si were investigated from May 2009 to October 2011. Domatia of V. carlesii reveals pocket type, these of V. burejaeticum, V. dilatatum and V. wrightii reveal tuft type, and that of V. odoratissimum var. awabuki reveals pouch type. Domatia number per leaf proves the highest figures, 24.0/leaf for V. burejaeticum, and the lowest, 4.9/leaf for V. carlesii. Leaf surface trichomes of four Viburnum species except for V. odoratissimum var. awabuki are mainly stellate and hispid on the leaf-blade and veins, and dense stellate trichomes on the upper leaf surface of V. carlesii, V. burejaeticum, and V. dilatatum are observed till late growing season. Extrafloral nectaries(EFN) on the terminal veins of five Viburnum species are observed. Pellucid dots on the lower leaf surface of V. dilatatum and V. wrightii might be a good defense strategies against herbivores. We observe many predatory mites eating nectar on large pellucid dots of V. dilatatum. Predatory mites number per leaf proved highly significant differences among tree species, and mean of mites number was highest values 8.1/leaf for V. burejaeticum, and the lowest 2.6/leaf for V. odoratissimum var. awabuki. These results indicate that temperate broadleave trees develop various defense strategies against herbivores for survival. The more studies on the defense strategies against herbivores of tree species might be needed for sustainable forest ecosystem.

The objective of this study was to select a representative coastal disaster prevention forest type for each coastal area. In this study, we used cluster analysis with the results obtained from investigation for density of growing stock, tree height, DBH, and forest width and length of major coastal disaster prevention forests distributed in the west, the south, and the east coasts. The results showed that the coastal disaster prevention forests for each coast were classified into two types: a forest type with small DBH and high growing stock density (W1) or with high tree height (W2) in the west coast, a forest type with small tree height (S1) or with large DBH (S2) in the south coast, and a forest type with small growing stock density (E1) or with small tree height and low DBH (E2) in the east coast. The coastal disaster prevention forests located in Gurye beach (Hwangchon-ri, Wonbuk-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do) and in Gohsapo beach (Unsna-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeollabuk-do) were selected as the representative forests of W1 and W2, respectively. In addition, the coastal disaster prevention forests located in Namyang beach (Namyang-ri, Seolcheon-myeon, Namhae-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do) and in Donggo beach (Donggo-ri, Sinji-myeon, Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do) were selected as the representative forests of S1 and S2, respectively. Last, the coastal disaster prevention forests located in Bonggil beach (Bonggil-ri, Yangbuk-myeon, Gyeongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do) and in Anmeok beach (Gyeonso-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do) were selected as the representative forests of E1 and E2, respectively. Our finding is expected to be used as baseline data in establishing the most appropriate coastal disaster prevention forest for each coast.
This study analyses geochemistrical, microscopic, mineralogical characteristics of coals which have been collected from in and out of the shipwreck No 1 of Mado island during underwater excavation in Taean. The result from mineralogical and geochemical analysis reveals that the specific gravity of the coals is $1.28g/cm^3$. Considering that coals contains 10% mineral of it and the specific gravity of the pure is $1.15g/cm^3$, it is believed that the collected coals would be lignite or biturminous coal. The X-ray diffraction analysis which displays the peak of $2{\theta}$ is 20~25C degree, proves that the collected coals would be categorised as low rank coal. The collected coals is composed of: 93%-94%(93.5%) of vitrinite maceral group, 5%-6%(5.5%) of exinite maceral group, and 1% of inertinite maceral group. In addition, the average of reflection rate is $R_{mean}$: 0.627 showing that it would be either high volatile bituminous C coal or sub-bituminous C coal. Such result confirms that the coal is sub-bituminous C or high volatile bituminous C coal in accordance with the U.S Bureau of Mine(USBM) classification system. The element analysis reveals that the coal is the coking coal which is grouped as the bituminous coal. Comparative analysis between the coals of Mado Shipwreck No 1 and domestic coals shows that the coals of Mado Shipwreck is similar to the bituminous coal used in the area of Janggi in Pohang city.
Generally potassium in the soil can be remained as water soluble, exchangeable, and available types, respectively. Theses types of potassiums are also known to keep their kinetic relationships to each other. The Purpose on this research was to investigate types and relationships of potassium in the soil, and the characteristics of potassium supply in different forest soils. The results could be summarized as follows; 1. The amounts of available potassium in A and B horizon soils by continuous leaching with 0.01N-HCl were as follows : for A Horizon soils, pohang(Gray brown forest soils), Changsung (Brown forest soils), and Youngwol(Dark red forest soils) were ranged from 0.2me/l00g to 0.8me/100g, Taean(Red and Yellow forest soils) was 0.1-0.6me/100g, Kapyung(Brown forest soils) was 0.2-0.4me/100g. For the B layer, Youngwol was 0.1-0.5me/100g, Pohang, Taean, Kapyung were 0.1-0.4me/100g, Changsung was 0.1-0.3me/100g, respectivly. 2. Of ten times-pulse leaching with 0.01N-HCl for A layer soil, more 80% of total available potassium leaching were recovered by the second pulse as leachate for Pohang, Changsung, Youngwol, while similar amounts of potassium in the leachate were obtained with the third pulse leaching for Kapyung, Taean, respectively, On the other hand, the 80 % release of available potassium from the B layer soil was obtained by the second pulse leaching for all areas investigated. 3. For the relationships between soluble potassium and exchangeable potassium, the exchangeable potassium was increased while the soluble potassium was not changed significantly in B layer. And both soluble potassium and exchangeable potassium in A layer were similar. For the relationship between exchangeable potassium and available potassium in both A and B layers, the amounts of available potassium increased by 1.2 to 1.5 times as the exchangeable potassium increased. 4. For distribution of all types of potassium throughout locations investigated, the types of potassium were in the decreasing orders of available, exchangeable, and soluble. 5. The simplified method for an analysis of all types of potassium by sequential leaching with 0.01N-HCl should be developed not only with respect to time-saving and efficiency but also verification of the relationship between available potassium and tree growth.

In this study, we survey the 2 buildings at the Central 1 and 8 buildings at the Central 2, which are divided by each climate region in the rural regions. Major heat loss factors are 47% loss of the outer shell including outer wall, roof, and bottom, 30% loss through window, and 23% loss through crevice wind. We analyze the energy simulation of ECO2 program to construct a zero energy building regarding village hall located in Jung Juk 4-le at Centeral 2. We simulate the primary energy requirement regarding village hall and the simulated results show the $265.3kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ and it may estimate '2' energy efficiency grade. The energy requirement regarding village hall is the $183.2kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ when the passive technology are applied in village hall. We research total amount of energy requirement in village hall when the passive and active technologies such as solar cell with 3kW and solar thermal with $20m^2$, geothermal power with 17.5kW. The simulated results show the improved energy efficiency certification grade with $1^{{+}{+}{+}}$ due to the reduced primary energy requirement with 73% when passive technology including 3kW of solar panel is applied and the energy independence rate is 54%, which is estimated to be 4th grade of zero energy buildings. The order of energy consumption are solar panel, solar thermal, and geothermal power under applied passive technology in the building. In order to expand the zero energy building, it is necessary to introduce the zero energy evaluation system in the rural region.

This study was conducted to investigate the impact of sand addition to an intertidal for the development of the Manila clam habitat on benthic community structure. For this, we focused on the spatio-temporal changes in the surface sediment condition and benthic community structure including Manila clam before and after the event. Study site was the lower part of Ojjeom tidal flat in Gonam-myeon, Taean-gun where sand added to on July 2010. We set three stations at each of sand adding area (experimental plot) and non sand-adding area (control plot) and did sampling works ten times from June 2010 to October 2011. Directly after the event, surface sediments changed to very coarse sand, but the state was not maintained over two months because of seasonal sedimentation and finally got back to the original grain sizes in eight months. The number of species and density were temporarily reduced right after the event and polychaetes such as Sternaspis scutata, Ampharete arctica were most negatively affected by the event. However, the number of species and density quickly recovered from the reduction in four to six weeks owing to the recolonization by the existing species and species in the vicinity of the plot. However, despite the recovery of ecological indies, species composition was continuously changed from one to another, thereby community structure stayed unstable condition, especially in some stations with finer sediment in their original condition. After sand addition, density of Manila clam was prominently increased at only one station with coarser sediment in its original condition.
The purpose of this study was to carry out radiocarbon dating using a wiggle match, of wooden boards and grains from the Mado shipwreck No. 4, which was excavated from Mado in Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. The result of the wiggle matching for four decennial tree-ring samples of the stern plank produced a ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) of A.D. 1337-1356 or A.D. 1412-1429. The grains produced a ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) of A.D. 1415-1455. This indicated that the Mado shipwreck No. 4 belonged to the early or middle of the 15th century. These radiocarbon dating results correlate with the date that was speculated by archaeologists according to the ship's structure and ceramic style.
The rhizobacterial diversity associated with 9 native plant species inhabiting coastal sand dunes in Tae-an area, Chungnam Province, was studied using the denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) fingerprinting analysis over three times from October 2003 to March 2004. One dominant band commonly occurred in all of the rhizosphere samples, which was identified as that of Lysobacter enzymogenes. The other common bands included those derived from species of Pseudomonas and Bacillus. It was notable that L. enzymogenes was dominant in all of the 9 plant species and such dominance was consistent throughout the whole sampling period, which confirms the previous study by Lee et al. (2006a). The Bacillus bands were detected in all of the three samplings, and those of Pseudomonas were notable in the samples of December 2003. By the DGGE analysis alone, the significance of Lysobacter to the sand dune plants is not clear. However, considering their presence in healthy plants and the dominance in all plant species, Lysobacter may have positive roles in the survival or growth of the plants in sand dune area.

Fecal contamination levels of discharge water from inland pollution sources were investigated in Iwon-myeon (Taean-gun), South Korea. Gram-negative bacteria were isolated during the investigation and the antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolates were examined to estimate their impact on the coastal environment. The ranges of total coliform and fecal coliform of 12 samples from four major inland pollution sources were 79-490,000 MPN/100 mL and 2.0-490,000 MPN/100 mL, respectively, with the highest level of fecal contamination at Station No. 3. A total of 137 strains (14 genus) were isolated, of which 86 strains (62.8%) were Enterobacteriaceae. The identified isolates were as follows: Pseudomonas spp. (35 strains), Klebsiella spp. (20 strains), Serratia spp. (20 strains), and Escherichia spp. (19 strains). The isolated Gram-negative bacteria showed the highest antimicrobial resistance to ampicillin (81.8%), followed by amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (64.2%), ceftiofur (61.3%), and cefoxitin (59.1%). Antimicrobials in which less than 10% of isolates showed antimicrobial resistance were ciprofloxacin (3.6%) and gentamicin (2.2%). Resistance to one or more antimicrobials was observed in 121 strains (88.3%) and 84 strains (61.3%) showed a tendency for multiple antimicrobial resistance.
This study is to evaluate economic effect of the creation project of Octopus Ochellatu spawning and habitat ground in Taean County. The main results of this study are summarized as follows: first, the creation project cost of Octopus Ochellatus spawning and habitat ground invested in Taean from 2015 to 2017 was 3,400 million won. Second, The creation project of Octopus Ochellatus spawning and habitat ground directly provides fishing benefits, recreational boat fishing benefits, festival benefits, research and development benefits, and employment benefits. Third, on the basis of above benefits, the creation project of Octopus Ochellatus spawning and habitat ground has a net present value of 14,478 million won, internal rate of return 60.8%, and benefit-cost of 5.03 under a 4.5% social discount rate. Also, the creation project creates 47 jobs. This indicates that the creation project of Octopus Ochellatus spawning and habitat ground contributes not only to the increase in the income of coastal fishery, recreational boat fishing business and fishing villages but also to the job making. In conclusion, with all these results, a project for making spawning grounds and habitats in the specified region gives species more numerically abundant and this gives more profits to fishermen in the coastal area. In addition, this project helps to make attractions to visitors or people who came to those specified regions to participate in events or have recreation, which means it improves profits to that fishing village and improve a settlement condition.
