  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to systematically analyze the effect of Tai Chi as therapeutic exercise on depressing blood pressure. Methods : We reviewed articles published in the PubMed, Chinese Academic Journals(CAJ) and five Korean databases. The searching keywords were "Tai chi AND blood pressure" and "Tai chi AND hypertension". We evaluated the quality with Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results : In the 114 articles searched, 7 randomized controlled clinical trials were selected. Yang(楊) style Tai chi, exercising over 30 minutes a time and over three times a week, had an effect on decreasing blood pressure. However, Wu(吳) style Tai chi was not effective in decreasing blood pressure. Conclusions : Usual exercises for hypertension patients should be performed in the form of moderate exercises intensity for 10-26 weeks by 30-60 minute a time, over 3 times a week. The study of Tai Chi on blood pressure needs to follow this criteria in the future.

  • Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of Tai-chi in treatinglow back pain. Methods: We searched 9 electronic databases(Pubmed, CAJ, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, KISS, KISTI, NDSL, and RISS) till April 2018 and included randomized controlled trials(RCTs) that used Tai-chi for lower back pain treatment. The methodological quality of each RCT was assessed usingthe Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: As per the inclusion criteria, 5 RCTswere found to be eligible for our review. These studies were divided into 4 groups and meta-analysis was performed. The meta-analysis of 1 study showed favorable results regardingthe use of Tai-chi. Twostudies showed favorable results regardingthe use of Tai-chi with Tuina rather than Tuina alone. All studies were observed to have a high risk of bias. Conclusions: There is limited evidence available to support the effectiveness of Tai-chi in relieving low back pain;hence, additionalwell-designed RCTs should be encouraged for better evidence.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the research trends of physical activities interventions such as yoga, taichi, and qigong to reduce anxiety. Methods: Korean databases were searched for articles related to survey of physical activity interventions (yoga, taichi, qigong) to reduce anxiety from 2009 to 2015. Results: Fifteen articles published in Korean journals from 2009 to 2015 were retrieved. The quality of studies were generally low and characteristics of subject were not homogeneous. Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used most frequently as an assessment tool. The included publications included 9 articles on yoga, 4 articles on qigong, and 2 articles on taichi. Of these, 8 of 9 articles on yoga, 2 of 4 articles on qigong, and 2 of 2 articles on taichi reported that intervention group showed statistically significant decrease of anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: In this study, physical activity interventions such as yoga, taichi and qigong might be beneficial for reducing anxiety. However, more scientifically designed research on physical activity- based treatments are needed to prove the efficacy and effectiveness.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to review the research trends in the treatment of tai chi on depression. Methods: We searched articles in Pubmed and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) July 2009~June 2019. Selected studies were evaluated by the Jadad scale. Results: Fifteen controlled clinical trials were selected. The GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale) and SDS (Self-rating Depression Scale) were most frequently used as diagnostic criteria. The GDS was also the most commonly used outcome measurement. From the Jadad scale of 15 articles, the quality of the studies was low, overall. Conclusions: According to this study, it seems that tai chi treatment for depressive disorder is an effective and safe intervention. Thus, based on this study, more clinical research on diverse forms of treatments for depressive disorder should be performed in Korean medicine in the near future.

  • Objectives: There are substantial variations on the methods of identifying Sa-sang typology in clinical practice. This review aimed to describe the clinical experiences on the classification of Sa-sang typology based on index signs for practice of Tae-Geuk acupuncture. Methods: Core physical signs and interpretation of treatment response for the classification of Sa-sang typology are suggested based on 42-year clinical experiences of the expert (the first author). Results: Epigastric tenderness and hepatic dullness sound are the most important physical sign in the classification of Sa-sang typology. Clinical experiences indicate that there may be a positive association between the presence of epigastric tenderness and hepatic dullness sound. Four sets of acupuncture points are matched for four types of Sa-sang institution, respectively. Appropriate match will resolve epigastric tenderness and hepatic dullness sound, while this will not happen if inappropriate match is employed. Conclusion: I suggest that two physical signs (i.e., epigastric tenderness and hepatic dullness sound) are essential for the classification of Sa-sang typology in Tae-Geuk acupuncture.
