A study is to research crash barriers for vehicles that prevent road breakaway of vehicles and protect car passengers and pedestrians as absorbing impulse. Protection performance tests on vehicle passengers were simulated by using a LS-DYNA program. Through repetitive simulation on various speed and angles, passenger protection performance according to different impact condition was contemplated. Variable setting for the simulation was calculated as the mean weight of domestic car sales. By analyzing NASS (National Automotive Sampling System) of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) of the U.S., the actual speed and collision angle section of accidents were computed. As a result, we confirmed that THIV (Theoretical Head Impact Velocity) and PHD (Post-impact Head Deceleration) are increased according to the impact speed and angle. Also, when the vehicle hit the guardrail post, we could be confirmed that the passenger protection performance greatly decreased.

According to the rules, a crash cushion is supposed to set up products that is satisfied with the standard of a performance test after performing the car crash test by road safety facilities and management guide. For development of crash cushion, performance should be estimated through the car crash test eventually. However, there is no reasonable design method which considers passenger's safety and only depend on crash test without an alternative plan. Therefore it incurs a loss materially and takes a lot. Therefore, we are asked to create a systematic design of the crash cushion. This study shows that a scientific basis of applying single degree of freedom when it designs the crash cushion after analyzing vehicle crash test data of crash cushion and also represents design of crash cushion through single degree of freedom response spectrum using calculated by crash test data on crash cushion.

The performance of crash cushion systems is certified through the full scale crash tests by the standard for installation and maintenance guidelines for roadside safety appurtenance. The impact severities of impacting vehicles in collision with crash cushion systems are rated by indices THIV and PHD. Crash test results are considered to study the performance of three crash cushion systems. In case of the frontal impact or the offset frontal impact, the results show that THIV values of three systems are very close to the threshold limit for the occupant protection. Also, the results show that PHD would be improper for the occupant protection performance index. In order to improve the occupant protection performance of crash cushions, ASI needs to be included in the impact severity index.

In this study, for a safetv assessment of light weight wheelchair occupant in frontal crash, we tested a dynamic sled impact test. we carried out total 6 times test and impact speed was 20g/48 km/h. By using Hybrid III 50%ile male dummy, head injury criteria(HIC), neck flexion moment, neck axial tension force, neck shear force. chest acceleration, head, wheelchair and knee excursion were measured, we evaluated light weight wheelchair occupant safety by motion criteria(MC) which proposed in SAE J2249 and combined injury criteria(CIC) which is a voluntary standard(GM-IARV) of General Motors Co.. when we assumed that the maximum injury value in frontal crash was 100%, the result of motion criteria(MC) of wheelchair occupant was 52%, occupant upper body injury index(CIC) was 60.1%.

To minimze the degree of damage for the SMART highway's punctuality and safety after car-barrier collisions, the impact condition for longitudinal barriers of SMART highway was determined to be quite larger than the existing maximum impact condition. The impact condition consists of impact vehicles, impact velocities, and impact angles. To consider the occupant safety of passenger cars as much as possible, a small car with high risk during impact was selected as the impact vehicle for the evaluation of occupant risk. The impact velocity was determined to be 20% larger than the existing maximum impact velocity in order to include accident impact velocities as much as possible. The impact angle was determined to include most of expected accident impact angles. Computer simulations using various impact conditions were conducted for the existing domestic highest-performance medium and roadside barrier. How the suggested impact condition has an effect on the occupant safety was investigated. The existing domestic highest-performance medium and roadside barriers could not satisfy the suggested impact condition. New high-performance longitudinal barriers are required to minimize the degree of damage for the SMART highway's punctuality and safety after car-barrier collisions.

Unshielded posts on roadside are a critical hazard to the safety of impact vehicle to the posts. A crashworthy post is developed. In the first phase, it dissipates the impact energy by the linear momentum conservation principle while the plastic impact between the post and vehicle takes place, then, the second phase dissipation follows by the deformation of the energy absorbing modules embedded in the guide trough of the foundation. Simulations of impacts to a rigidly connected post and crashworthy post were made using LS-DYNA program, which demonstrated the danger of unshielded rigidly connected post and the effectiveness of the proposed crashworthy post to the 0.9ton-80km/h impact.

As the number of reported injuries has tended to increase over time, large hospitalization expenditure from excessive medical treatments and hospitalization, and insurance frauds associated with moral hazard in minor collisions have caused a global societal problem. Many occupants of rear-ended vehicles involved in rear-end collisions complain of whiplash injury, which is also known as neck injury, without any anatomical and radiological evidence. With only clinical symptoms, stating that a whiplash injury is a type of injury defined by the Abbreviated Injury Scale would be difficult. Therefore, this study focuses on minor rear-end collisions, where the rear-ender vehicle collides with the rear-ended vehicle at rest. The mathematics dynamic model is employed to simulate a total of 100 rear-end collision scenarios based on various weights and collision speeds and identify how the weights and speeds of both vehicles influence the risk of whiplash injury in occupants involved in minor rear-end collisions. The possibility of an injury is very high when the same-weight vehicles are involved in accidents at collision speeds of 15 km/h or higher. The possibilities are 36% and 84% with collision speeds of 15 km/h and 20 km/h, respectively, if weights are disregarded.
The concrete median barriers are the most popular safety appurtenance that can be installed on narrow medians and are effective in keeping uncontrolled vehicles from crossing into opposing lanes of traffic. It is necessary to install and maintain median barriers because it is very difficult to reserve enough room required for medians in KOREA. Also, concrete median barriers are accepted as the actual alternatives for median barriers, mostly because they require almost no maintenance even after serious collisions. Typical concrete median barriers are 810mm high and have 596mm high glare screens on top of them. However we have experienced a number of "climb" and "roll-over" accidents of heavy vehicles and most of all, there have been some serious accidents caused by the part of broken glare screens. So the improvement study of concrete median barriers started. Prior to this study, a new type of concrete median barrier was suggested which is 1,270mm high and has no glare screens on top of it. So it was required to compare the properties of various types of concrete median barriers including the new type to find the optimal type of concrete median barrier. In this study, we have evaluated the characteristics of four types of concrete median barriers (New Jersey type, F type, constant slope type, and wall type). We have performed many computer simulations for the evaluation of the crashworthiness of them, and through the simulations we have tried to find a proper type of concrete median barrier. Through the computer simulations, we evaluated the structural stability and safety of the four types of concrete median barriers. We confirmed the structural stability and safety of them But in regard to the probability of "roll-over" of heavy vehicles, the higher concrete median barriers showed better performances than the lower. As the result of this study a new type of concrete median barrier was recommended.
This study dealt with dynamic characteristics by real car crash simulation of composite support structures for road facilities. The effects of different material properties of composites for various car crash speeds are studied using the LS-DYNA finite element program for this study. In this study, the existing finite element analysis of steel support structures using the LS-DYNA program is further extended to study dynamic behaviors of the support structures made of various composite materials. Based on the passenger safety assessment, the numerical results for various parameters are verified by comparing different models with internal energy occurred in the support and car.
