  • The purpose of this study was to compare student-student verbal interaction from two type's experiments; problem-solving and task-solving. For this study, five 3rd grade middle school students were selected and their verbal interactions recorded via voice and video; and later transcribed. The student-student verbal interactions were classified as questions, explanations, thoughts, or metacognition fields, which were separated into deep versus surface learning approaches. For the problem-solving experiment, findings revealed that the number of verbal interactions is more than doubled and in particular, the number of verbal interactions using deep-approach is more than quadrupled from the point of problem-recognition to problem-solution. As for the task-solving experiment, findings showed that verbal interactions remained evenly distributed throughout the entire experiment. Finally, it was also discovered that students relied upon a more deep learning approach during the problem-solving experiment than the task-solving experiment.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of problem-solving inquiry teaching using concept sketches on conceptual changes about plate tectonics and science-related attitudes. The subjects of this study were two classes of second-year students of K high school located at Anseong in Gyeonggi Province. Before instruction, a conceptual test was conducted to survey student's preconceptions about plate tectonics. The control group took a traditional lesson, while the experimental group was applied to problem-solving inquiry teaching using concept sketches. After the inquiry instruction, TOSRA (Test of Science-Related Attitudes) was administered to find out changes in science-related attitudes of the two groups. The results of this study are as follows. The experimental group understood concepts of plate tectonics better than the control group, which means that problem-solving inquiry teaching using concept sketches was more effective in students' conceptual understanding. Science-related attitudes of the experimental group showed a significant change in the categories of 'normality of scientists', 'pleasure of science lessons', and 'interests on science as a hobby'. In conclusion, the instruction of problem-solving inquiry using concept sketches produced students' positive changes in conceptual understanding about plate tectonics and science-related attitudes.

  • In this paper, we study the methods of improving an ability of a creative solving mathematical problem belonging to an educational system which every province office of education has adopted for the mathematically talented students. Especially, we give an attention on a preferential reaction in teaching styles according to student's LQ., the relationship between student's LQ. and an ability of creative solving mathematical problems, and seeking for an appropriative teaching methods of the improvement ability of a creative solving problem. As results, we have the followings; 1. The group having excellent students who have a higher intelligential ability prefers inquiry learning which is composed of several sub-groups to a teacher-centered instruction. 2. The correlation coefficient between student's LQ. and an ability creative solving of mathematical is not high. 3. Although the contents and the model of thematic inquiry learning don't have a great influence on the divergent thinking (ex. fluency, flexibility, originality), they affect greatly the convergent thinking - a creative mathematical - problem solving ability. Accordingly, our results show that we should use a variety of mathematical teaching materials apart from our regular textbooks used in schools to improve a creative mathematical problem solving ability in the process of thematic inquiry learning. Also we can see that an inquiry learning which stimulates student's participation and discussion can be a desirable model in the thematic mathematical classroom activities.

  • This study explored the effects of pre-service elementary teachers' inquiries into science class dilemmas. By closely examining the characteristics of the pre-service teachers' inquiry processes and changes in their educational decisions, the effectiveness of using dilemmas as part of teacher education was determined. Twenty fourth-year university pre-service teachers participated and conducted inquiries into science class dilemmas over seven weeks. Based on pre- and post-questionnaires, KWHL tables, inquiry reports, discussions, and group class presentations, the major factors that influence the pre-service teacher's decision-making changes were extracted. The pre-service teachers found the science inquiry process meaningful when exploring the science topics covered in the dilemmas, and claimed that elementary school students would be able to engage in meaningful science explorations if they learned science through inquiry. Furthermore, the pre-service teachers explored the thinking processes and background knowledge of the students in different ways. Documents such as teacher's guides and the curriculum were examined and the students' thought processes were identified through interviews with the teachers and students, which were found to reflect their educational decision-making. Moreover, it was recognized by the pre-service teachers that depending on the situation, alternative teaching methods were possible. The focus on the unstructured dilemma problems provided the pre-service teachers with problem-solving situations that triggered scientific inquiry and exploration of student thinking and revealed the complexity of science teaching and learning. Based on these results, the teacher education implications for using dilemma cases are discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of Science Writing Heuristic(SWH) strategy on problem-solving type inquiry modules through student-student verbal interactions. The modules were applied to 23 students of the 3rd grade in middle school and the SWH strategy was applied to 3 experimental groups. The SWH is the strategy that each student, first of all, has a chance to think and propose ways of problem-solving by individual writing a blue card when problems were emerged, and then students discuss ways of problem-solving with group members by writing a green card. Verbal interactions during small group discussions were audio- and video-taped, transcribed and analyzed to compare the effect of the SWH strategy. As a results, experimental groups tended to force solely on questions and suggestions about problem-solving, but controlled groups executed experiment and discussed about problem-solving simultaneously. The analysis also showed that the experimental students dialogued more on the deep-leveled argumental interactions than the controlled students did; in particular, show more SS3 and SD1 verbal interaction regarding suggestions of problem solving. We argue, therefore, that the SWH strategy is effective to the problem-solving type inquiry modules.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze classroom norms formed in inquiry activities of elementary science classes and to consider about the actual problems in enacting school science inquiry. Focusing on the inquiry activity cases of two classes, the data were collected through classroom observation, student interview, teacher interview and questionnaires. Firstly, classroom norms were categorized into three categories theoretically: norms for behavior guidance; general academic norms; and scientific inquiry academic norms. The subcategory norms of each category were extracted inductively and the features, the causes of formation, and the influences on inquiry of each norm were also analyzed. Based on the analyses on classroom norms, the researchers identified three actual problems in enacting school science inquiry. First, the collective traits of school science inquiry caused structural problems in science classrooms. Second, teachers used their authorities in different ways according to phases of instructions. Third, the conflict cases were reported between general values for education and specific values for science inquiry. Educational implications are discussed in terms of the practices of school science inquiry and of the understanding classroom phenomena.

  • Mathematical problem solving has become a major concern in school mathematics, and methods to enhance children's mathematical problem solving abilities have been the main topics in many mathematics education researches. In addition to previous researches about problem solving, the development of a mathematical problem solving method that enables children to establish mathematical concepts through problem solving, to discover formalized principles associated with concepts, and to apply them to real world situations needs. For this purpose, I examined the necessity of problem solving education and reviewed mathematical problem solving researches and problem solving models for giving the theoretical backgrounds. This study suggested the problem solving approach based on the intuitive and the formal inquiry which are the basis of mathematical discovery and inquiry process. And it is developed to keep the balance and complement of the conceptual understanding and the procedural understanding respectively. In addition, it consisted of problem posing to apply the mathematical principles in the application stage.
