  • A modeling and simulation program for an environmental control system (ECS) of a pod installed under wings of an aircraft was developed in order to estimate the system‘s performance during a flight. First, through the system configuration analysis in the main operational condition of the aircraft system, an ECS configuration adopting an air cycle machine (ACM) was selected. Therefore the modeling program was developed to simulate the ECS with an ACM. Second, the sensitivity analyses on performance variation of main components were conducted to complete the conceptual design of the ECS. A design point for the system and its components was obtained through the analysis with the modeling and simulation program. The design point for the system and components was obtained through the analysis with the modeling and simulation program. Third, in order to study the feasibility of the ECS configuration, off-design performances of the ECS on various flight conditions, such as take off, maneuver, cruise and landing etc were estimated. Dynamic characteristics were analyzed by transient performance evaluations.

  • In this study, numerical method, stage stacking method based on the result of numerical method and scaled stage stacking method have been applied to predict the performance of a multi-stage axial compressor with inlet guide vane. The results obtained through three different methods for off-design conditions were compared with performance test data. And the effect the angle of variable inlet guide vane was also investigated. The three-dimensional numerical simulation has been performed by using flow analysis program, $FLUENT^{TM}$ 6.3 and the performance prediction based on the stage stacking method has been performed with compressor analysis code from NASA.

  • Reliable starting capability of a gas turbine engine calls the engine industry's attention recently. So far the gas turbine engine performance researches have focused on the range between idle to Max rpm, but recent attention on the starting has brought interests in the range of "Sub-dile". As component characteristic maps are essential for the starting research, various kinds of studies have been doing and proposing ways to expand the existing maps toward sub-idle range. In this paper, previous studies were discussed and a new method suggested and validated.

  • This paper describes the development of a general program for the design and part load performance analysis of single-shaft-heavy-duty gas turbines. Efforts are made to fully represent the real component features by the characteristic models and special emphasis is put on the modeling of cooled turbine stages. The design analysis routine is applied to simulate the performance of current gas turbines and its appropriateness for system analysis is validated. Meanwhile, the component parameters of real engines which describe the technology level are obtained. The program is extended to predicting the part load operation of gas turbines with the aid of models for the off-design characteristics of compressor, turbine and other main components. Part load simulation can be carried out only with limited numbers of input data. It is demonstrated that the program accurately estimates the part load characteristics of real turbines.

  • Since the hypersonic intake is directly related to the overall performance of the engine, it is essential to analyze performance characteristics under various off-design conditions. In this paper, Busemann intake and conical intake with external compression were designed, and numerical simulations were performed at on/off-design conditions. Based on the results, the overall performance characteristics of two types of intake were analyzed in various Mach numbers and angle of attacks. The results showed that performance degradation of Busemann intake with truncation angle of 2 degrees was minimal. Also, the performance of Busemann intake was higher than external compression intake at various Mach numbers, however, the starting characteristics were significantly reduced with an angle of attack.

  • In order to effectively reduce thermal loads on regenerative cooled walls, fuel cooling injectors and film cooling devices have often been employed. The present study has established a numerical methodology for prediction of performance and near-wall temperature distribution taking into account the nonuniform mixing due to these additional cooling devices. A correction procedure for main propulsive parameters has also been proposed based on comparison between prediction and experimental data. Under the computational framework of this study, the predicted results were in good agreement with hot-firing test data for a 30 tonf-class full-scale combustor at the design and off-design conditions. As a consequence, the present numerical method is expected to be useful for design and evaluation of regenerative cooled liquid rocket thrust chambers.

  • In this study, a radial inflow type turbine was applied and the outer diameter of the turbine rotor was 108 mm. The turbine blade on a circular plate disc was designed as an axial-type because its partial admission rate was 1.4-4.1%. The turbine consisted of three stages. The performance test has been conducted with various admission rates, tip clearances and nozzle flow angles. The turbine output power was measured on each stage. The turbine performance was obtained in a wide rotational speed range in order to compare its performance according to various operating conditions. The net specific output torque was also measured to compare its overall performance. Computational analysis was conducted for predicting turbine performance. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Performance tests of a 75-tonf liquid rocket engine turbopump were conducted. The performance of sub-components - two pumps and a turbine - and their power matching were measured and examined firstly near the design speed under the LN2 and kerosene environment. In the real propellant - LOX and kerosene - environment tests, design and off-design performance of turbopump were fully verified in regime of the rocket engine operation. During the off-design performance tests, turbopump running time was set longer than the engine operating time to verify the pump operability and set the pump inlet pressure close to design NPSHr to investigate pump suction capability in parallel. It has been found that developed-turbopump satisfied all of the engine required performances.

  • This study simulated the operation of a steam injected gas turbine combined heat and power (CHP) system. A full off-design analysis was carried out to examine the change in the turbine blade temperature caused by steam injection. The prediction of turbine blade temperature was performed for the operating modes suggested in the previous study where the limitation of compressor surge margin reduction was analyzed in the steam injected gas turbine. It was found that both the fully injected and partially injected operations suggested in the previous study would cause the blade temperature to exceed that of the pure CHP operation and the under-firing operation would provide too low blade temperature. An optimal operation was proposed where both the turbine inlet temperature and the injection amount were modulated to keep both the reference turbine blade temperature and the minimum compressor surge margin. The modulation was intended to maintain a stable compressor operation and turbine life. It was shown that the optimal operation would provide a larger power output than the under-firing operation and a higher efficiency than the original partially injected operation.
