Management of Test Facility for Tests of Liquid Rocket Engine on Off-Design Condition (액체로켓엔진 탈설계 조건 시험을 위한 시험설비 운용)

  • A liquid rocket engine goes through many tests to prove its performance before liftoff. It means the tests for setting ignition and start-up conditions or a test on design condition, which verifies the design performance. However, the development process requires verification of performance under off-design conditions through tests involving different operating conditions, which affects the duration of engine development. The off-design performance test is performed by altering the conditions of the propellant supplied to the engine in conjunction with the engine performance test that varies the opening of the control valves in the engine. This paper is based on the results of the engine tests performed at the KSLV-II engine test facilities in the Naro Space Center and describes the operations of the test facility for off-design condition test that changes the inlet conditions of the turbo-pump due to changes in the pressure and temperature of the propellant supplied to the test engines.

  • 현대에 이르러 초음속 운영 영역에서의 항공기에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되고 있으나, 음속 폭음 현상과 충격파 현상에서 야기된 높은 항력 및 연료 효율성 저하로 인하여 그 한계에 부딪치고 있다. Busemann 복엽 익형은 이와 같은 문제를 해결하기 위한 형상이며, 상하 형상에 의한 파동 상쇄효과 및 파동 감소효과를 통해 충격파의 강도와 음속 폭음 효과를 감소시키는 형상이다. 하지만 본 익형은 탈설계 조건에서 항력 계수가 급격하게 증가하는 등의 문제점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 EDISON_CFD를 이용하여 Busemann 복엽 익형의 주변 유동 특성에 대하여 면밀한 고찰을 수행하였다. 우선 Busemann 복엽 익형의 초기 형상에 대한 유동 조건별 해석을 통하여 탈설계 조건에서의 항력 성능 저하 문제에 대한 고찰을 하였다. 이후 3개의 형상 변수에 대한 매개 변수 연구를 통하여 익형의 각 형상 변수가 탈설계 영역 및 해당 영역에서의 최대 항력 계수에 미치는 영향에 대한 고찰을 수행하였으며, 이를 통하여 기존 형상보다 좁은 탈설계 구간을 가지고, 최대 항력 계수가 약 34.8% 감소한 부스만 복엽 익형을 설계하였다.

  • A three-dimensional CSCM upwind flux difference splitting Navier-stokes code with two-equation turbulence models was developed to predict the transonic flows in centrifugal compressor diffuser. The k-$\epsilon$ model of Abe et al. performed well in predicting the pressure distribution in the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction. Three turbulence models predicted the similar distribution of static pressure through the diffuser and showed a good agreement with the experimental results. The secondary flows in the corner were predicted well by these turbulence models. The pressure increase before the throat of the diffuser vane is important for the overall pressure recovery. As the mass flow rate increased the blockage decreased at the throat. The pressure coefficient distribution through the diffuser depended on the throat blockage not on the rotational speed of the impeller.

  • Cooling tower design procedure was set up using conventional Merkel theory, The design data could be different depending on the characteristic curve that the engineer chose. It reveals that the consistent and reasonable criteria are required based on the exact information of the cooling tower Performance. In this study, an off-design performance analysis program for a counterflow-type cooling tower was developed and verified by comparing with experimental data. Also, the off-design performance with various operating conditions was analyzed.

  • In this study, a program for the off-design performance prediction of multi-stage axial-compressors is developed based on stage-stacking method. To account for the increased losses at off-design conditions, generalized performance curve is applied. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of the choice of generalized performance curve and stator exit angle. For this purpose, we tested various generalized performance curves and stator exit angles. In conclusion, Muir's pressure coefficient curve gives a good prediction results regardless of the efficiency curve for a low-stage compressors. On the other hand, for high-stage compressors, The combination of Muir's pressure coefficient curve and Stone's efficiency curve gives a optimistic results. Stator exit angle has a small effect on overall performance curve.

  • Design and off-design program is set up to analyze the performance of a plate heat exchanger. The program is verified by comparing the results with the experiment. The comparison shows that the predicted overall heat transfer coefficients are in good agreement with the measurements. Also the off-design performance according to the variations of inlet water temperature, flow rate, and the number of plates is analyzed to study the performance characteristic of a plate heat exchanger.

  • In this study a model-based diagnostic method using the Neural Network was proposed for PW206C turbo shaft engine and performance model was developed by SIMULINK. Fault and test database to build the NN was obtained at various off-design operating range such as flight altitude, flight Mach number and gas generator rotational speed variation. According to the fault detection analysis results, it was confirmed that the proposed fault detection method could find well the fault of compressor, compressor turbine and power turbine at on-design point as well as off-design point conditions.

  • In general, the choking phenomenon occurs by flow acceleration for a turbine at high pressure ratio condition. In choking condition, total pressure ratio increases without mass flow rate variation. It is hard to predict choking characteristics by using conventional meanline analysis which used mass flow inlet boundary condition. In the present study, the algorithm for predicting choking point is developed to solve the problem. Moreover, performance estimation algorithm after choking is presented by reflecting the flow behaviour of flow expansion at choked nozzle or rotor. The analysis results are compared with 3D CFD analysis and experimental data to validate present method.
