Experiments on carbonization were conducted using fish offal generated from fish market for the purpose of resource recycling. Elemental composition of fish offal and effect of carbonation temperature on the overall yield were investigated. Carbon and hydrogen contents of fish offal were 51.1% and 7.6%, respectively in view of elemental composition. Particularly, nitrogen and sulfur contents were as high as 9.8% and 1.0%, respectively. These values suggests that odor problem of fish offal can be serious. Comparing elemental composition of fish offal with other waste materials, it is thought that carbon and hydrogen contents are considerably high. These implies that thermal disposal will be the best option for final disposal method of fish offal. As a results of carbonization experiments on Mackerel, Hairtail, Croaker and mixed sample of Mackerel, Hairtail and Croaker, carbonization patterns were quite similar irrespective of fish species. Carbonization yield was varied significantly depending on carbonization temperature at the carbonization time of 5 minutes and 10 minutes. When the carbonization time was maintained longer than 30 minutes, yield variation depending on time variation at each temperature was insignificant. Thus, it can be concluded that effect of carbonization time on overall yield was minor when the carbonization time was maintained longer than 30 minutes. Primary vaporization in carbonization conducted at the temperature of $400^{\circ}C$ was minor. Thus, difference of yield between temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ was appeared greatly. It can be concluded that yield difference depending on carbonization temperature can be neglected if the carbonizing temperature exceed $600^{\circ}C$ and carbonizing time exceed 10 minutes at the same time.
A bacterial isolate capable of degrading benzoate was selected from wastewater of Yocheon industrial complex and examined its biochemical characteristics and fatty acid composition. The isolate was identified as Klebsiella oxytoca strain C302. The strain C3O2 degraded catechol, protocatechuate, and 4-hydroxybenzoate as well as benzoate. The strain grew on and degraded 0.5 to 1.0 mM catechol most actively in MM2 medium at pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$.

Study on the instability of waste plastic's thermal pyrolysis oil was carried out for the purpose of improving its quality. The reaction of pyrolysis oil with ozone changed double bonds into aldehydes and ketone, estimated that HDPE pyrolysis oil contained $\sim45$ wt% 1-alkene type olefins, and PP pyrolysis oil did $\sim73$ wt% olefins, which consisted of $\sim47$ wt% secondary and $\sim20$ wt% primary alkenes. The dark brown color and odor of pyrolysis oil were improved by eliminating double bonds, indicated that they were directly related to unsaturated hydrocarbons. Container test showed that metal can affected oil quality worse than the brown glass bottle. Antioxidant added into pyrolysis oil was consumed up to 90% within $2\sim3$ days and the wt. composition of unsaturated hydrocarbons in pyrolysis oil was not changed within 50 days, inferring that instability of pyrolysis oil due to unsaturated bonds can be stabilized by antioxidants. Adsorption test on silica gel, activated carbon and alumina to remove precipitates in oil produced a good result, but not enough to remove moisture. However, cheap anhydrous sodium carbonate showed the best removal efficiency of moisture as well as precipitates in oil. Therefore the pyrolysis oil quality improvement was accomplished by applying anhydrous $Na_2CO_3$ into the production plant.
Some bacteria with different mechanisms for hydrocarbon degradation were isolated from oil-contaminated soils in Korea. Isolate Acinetobacter calcoaceticus SL1 showed biosurfactant- producing activity in oil-spreading test, and it exhibited a good emulsifying activity of 43.6 and 54.5% for diesel oil and n-hexane, respectively. It also has high cell surface hydrophobicity which can make it easily attaches to hydrocarbons and degrade them. It degraded 100% of 1,000 mg/L of n-octadecane and naphthalene, respectively in 3 days, 72.3% of 1,000 mg/L diesel oil in 7 days and 78.0% of 10,000 mg/L diesel oil in oil-contaminated soil during 28 days. Isolated strains Bacillus amyloliquefaciens S10 and B. subtilis GO9 can produce biosurfactant and formed 6.34 and 2.5 cm diameter of clear zones, respectively in oil-spreading test. Surface tension of their culture supernatant reduced from 74.6 to 34.4 and 33.3 mN/m, respectively during incubation, and critical micelle concentrations of culture supernatants were 2.0 and 5.9%, respectively. Consortium of A. calcoaceticus SL1 and B. amyloliquefaciens S10 degraded 77.8% of 10,000 mg/L diesel oil in 3 days, which indicated more efficient oil degradation than that by A. calcoaceticus SL1 alone. If these bacteria were applied together as a consortium to oil-contaminated sites, they may show a high removal rate of petroleum hydrocarbons.

This study offers a novel method for improving the physical contact between the anode and fuel in a direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC): a direct generation of carbon in a porous Ni anode through the thermal decomposition of gaseous hydrocarbons. Three kinds of alkane hydrocarbons with different carbon numbers (CH4, C2H6, and C3H8) are tested. From electron microscope observations of the carbon particles generated from each hydrocarbon, we confirm that more carbon spheres (CS), carbon nanotubes (CNT), and carbon nanofibers (CNF) were identified with increasing carbon number. Raman scattering results revealed that the carbon samples became less crystalline and more flexible with increasing carbon number. DCFC performance was measured at $700^{\circ}C$ with the anode fueled by the same mass of each carbon sample. One-dimensional carbon fuels of CNT and CNF more actively produced and had power densities 148 and 210 times higher than that of the CS, respectively. This difference is partly attributed to the findings that the less-crystalline CNT and CNF have much lower charge transfer resistances than the CS.
In this study, the reforming reaction of vacuum residues (VR), high viscosity oil residues produced from vacuum distillation process of petroleum oil, was carried out using catalytic aquathermolysis reaction. VR showed a prone to decrease the amount of resins and asphaltenes in the constituents, and to increase saturates and aromatics when reacting with steam at 30 bar and above $300^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. When the amount of steam is not enough at this reaction, the asphaltene content in the products was rather increased after the reaction. As a result of the catalytic aquathermolysis using the metal oxide-zeolite catalyst with the decaline as a hydrogen donor, a 10% decrease in resin and asphaltene as well as a 10% increase in the aromatic hydrocarbon were observed. Consequently, the viscosity of VR decreased by 70% after the reaction. GC-Mass spectroscopy showed that the aquathermolysis of VR resulted in the decomposition of the resins and asphaltens into a low molecular weight material.

Soot and harmful exhaust gas produced by liquid hydrocarbon fuel caused various environmental problems. In this study, soot characteristics produced by thermal decomposition of acetylene and diesel were analyzed, which are formed at different temperatures. These fuels were observed to produce particulate matters, and collected soot samples were observed by using TEM & SEM. These were found to be significantly different in structure and crystallinity.
